On Today’s Show

Two days ago, David Ayres was simply enjoying his life as a Zamboni driver. But now in the hockey world everywhere. He was the emergency goalie Saturday night and the 42 yr old got to play for the Carolina Hurricanes after their two goalies were injured. He became the first emergency goalie to be credited a win in NHL history, and he played more than 28 minutes, which is also a record for an emergency goalie.

Within hours of the game ending the Hurricanes already had Ayers’ No. 90 jersey up available for sale on their website. The team confirmed that “Dave will be getting royalties, but we are also working with him to identify a kidney foundation that will receive a portion of the proceeds.” Around 15 years ago, Ayres had a kidney transplant and, at the time, he thought he’d never play hockey again.

He received a standing ovation from the 19,414 fans, was named the 1st star and he was covered in celebration beers from the players on the Hurricanes after the game.

Ayres says the Hurricanes are going to frame the game puck along with the jersey he wore that special night and send it back to him.

ENTERTAINMENT

“Sonic the Hedgehog” just barely held off HARRISON FORD and a fake dog to stay at #1 at the box office for a second straight week.  “Sonic” made another $26.3 million, and “Call of the Wild” opened with $24.8 million.

The “Friends” reunion is on.  The six main cast members are making between $2.5 million and $3 million to do it.  It’ll be available on HBO Max when it launches, but there’s no date for that yet.  Just to be clear, this is NOT going to be a scripted revival of “Friends”.  Probably more like a clip show where the cast reminisces.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Tortilla Chip Day”, saluting the invention by Rebecca Webb Carranza of Los Angeles during the 1940s. Rather than tossing misshaped tortillas from an automated tortilla machine into the trash, she cut them into triangles, fried them, and sold them for a dime a bag.

  • “Shrove Monday”, also known as “Lundi Gras” (Fat Monday. Processions of decorated floats, regiments of ‘Fools Guilds’ in traditional uniforms, brass bands, horses & costumed groups wind through city streets.

WORLD RECORDS

A 62-year-old set a Guinness World Record by planking for 8 hours, 15 minutes, and 15 sec.

An Indian man broke a Guinness World Record when he used a sword  to slice through 75 pineapples being held on the heads of volunteers in under 30 seconds.

He beat the previous record of 61 pineapples in 30 seconds, which was set December 2019. Alavi previously set Guinness records for feats including breaking concrete blocks with a hammer.

GOOD NEWS

A guy named Nick Harvey is a school resource officer in Van Buren, Arkansas.  And he’s usually stationed at the elementary school.

An eight-year-old student named Avey Cox is in second grade there.  And tragically, her dad passed away during the holidays.

It’s impossible to even imagine how hard that’s been on her . . . and it got even HARDER earlier this month, when the school had its annual father-daughter dance.

So Nick got the idea to step in, and escort Avey to the dance.  He says, quote, “I reached out to [her] mother . . .  Her mom talked to her about it and, the next day, I formally asked if she’d be my date to the daddy-daughter dance.”

Avey said yes, and they went to the dance together last week.  She says, quote, “It meant a lot because I actually got to go and see all my friends . . . and have lots of fun.”

Nick says he’s hoping he can take her every year from now on . . . he has three daughters, but they’re all too old for the dances.

PUTTING ON AN ADDITION:
Have you always wanted to be taller? In the past year, at least 30 men have met with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kevin Debiparshad to have him saw through their perfectly healthy leg bones.

At his “LimbplastX Institute” in Las Vegas, the good doctor cuts through patients’ femurs or tibias, forces the bones to separate with metal implants, and sends them on their way to heal.

Once their bones grow back, the patient will be several inches taller. How much for this revolutionary procedure? Usually about $100,000.

Although the procedure has existed for decades, most doctors who perform it do so for clinical, or medically-necessary reasons. This doctor compares the surgery to butt implants, nose jobs — and even, provocatively, gender reassignment surgery.

He says that “cosmetic lengthening” can be done to increase one’s chances of landing a mate (or mates), to improve one’s success in their career, or simply to provide a confidence boost.

ONTARIO’S BEST CIDER

A local farmer has made some of the best apple cider in the province and has the awards to back it up.

Hector Delanghe, owner of Delhaven Orchards, and his son Mark recently won first place in the Ontario Sweet Apple Cider contest at the Ontario Fruit & Vegetable Convention held in Niagara Falls. Delanghe said eight judges went through categories such as flavour, sweetness, aroma, and sediment amount, to pick the best cider. He said there were 10 different samples to judge at this year’s contest.

Delanghe said they haven’t seen specific notes from the judges in regards to the ciders but a full report is expected within the next six weeks or so. In terms of what makes Delhaven Orchards’ apple cider better than the others, Delanghe said it may have something to do with the different apple varieties used in their blend.

Over a 10 year span, the local farmers have walked away seven times having cracked the top three rankings at the apple cider contest — two were for first place, two for second place, and three for third place. Delhaven Orchards is located at 8182 Talbot Trail in Blenheim.

The app combines Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. It features a home screen that lists every file you’ve recently created, edited or accessed across the three apps, and the hope is it will help you keep track of your school, work, or personal projects.

Among other features, the app also has a full Word, Excel, and PowerPoint editor. Microsoft says it will soon offer dictation inside Word. It should be available for download now in the Play Store and App Store.

One of Brantley Gilbert‘s son, Barrett‘s, favorite toys is his dad’s tour bus. The bus sits parked at the Gilbert’s house when Brantley’s not on the road, and as Brantley tells us, spending time on it is definitely a highlight of Barrett’s day. [“He loves going up there. That’s usually part of our day. He wants to walk to the top of the hill and he’ll get on the bus, climb in the bunks, and he’s rambunctious, man. He’ll want to wrestle for a minute and he loves the bus.”]
