FOUR RANDOM FACTS

GOOD NEWS
A distillery in Portland, Oregon called Shine Distillery has been using a byproduct from the distilling process to make HAND SANITIZER. And they’re giving it away for FREE.
The first thing that comes out isn’t meant for drinking. But the alcohol content is really high. So even before this, they were using it as a cleaning product to wipe stuff down.
The owner is a guy named Jon Poteet. A customer he was talking to last week brought it up. So he looked into it and decided it was a good idea.
They can’t sell it, because it hasn’t been approved by the authorities who deal with this stuff. But they don’t WANT to sell it. And it turns out they can give it away for free as long as they don’t make any medical claims about how effective it is.
It’s a mix of 80% alcohol with a little bit of water, plus xanthan gum to thicken it. So it’s well above the CDC’s recommended 60% minimum to kill the virus.
It’s not clear how long it’ll be before they run out, if they haven’t already. But they’re doing what they can to help. Jon says that, quote, “Ultimately, I’m part of the community. I want my friends and neighbors to be happy and healthy.”

COVID QUICK HITS
- The first human trials for a vaccine to prevent coronavirus started yesterday in Seattle. They bypassed the usual step of testing on animals first because there’s NO TIME for that. And even with the accelerated schedule, the best estimates say it could take 12 to 18 months for a vaccine to become available to the public. For the first time since coronavirus started, there are now more cases outside China than inside.
- Dr. Drew Pinsky is appearing on L.A. TV each night and featuring a segment called “Dr. Drew’s Fact vs Fear”. (From Fox 11 Los Angeles on Monday, March 16, 2020)
- Amazon is warning people that deliveries are going to be delayed and items like toilet paper and hand sanitizer will frequently be out of stock. But they’re also planning to hire 10,000 new workers and raise pay to handle the surge in demand.

The Internet Is Furious That a Nashville Club Was Open Over the Weekend
Did you mix and mingle in public places over the weekend despite the “stay inside” warnings? If you did, MAREN MORRIS and the Internet have a few choice words for you.
Someone posted a video on Saturday of the packed house at Nashville’s The Stage on Broadway. It looked like a typical weekend night with people dancing, drinking, and enjoying the band. It was captioned “Downtown Nashville is undefeated.”
That brought some finger-wagging from Maren Morris. She wrote, “While the rest of us are trying to be responsible in our homes and get this [crap] over with, THIS? Broadway, you aren’t a hero for staying open.”
Most of the other commenters agreed. Stuff like, “Anyone in this bar who contracts Covid gets no sympathy.” Plus, “Looks like a fun petri dish.” And, “Viruses don’t care how brave you are. But they appreciate the carelessness.”
Well, it probably won’t happen again for a while, because the local Board of Health is recommending the closing of all bars in Metro Nashville. Plus, they want to reduce the restaurant occupancy to 50% or 100 seats.

COFFEE PERK:
Coffee: Is there anything it CAN’T do? A recent study has found that drinking coffee may improve your athletic performance.
Researchers from Coventry University in England recruited 38 adults, equally split between men and women, and divided them into three groups. One group drank regular coffee, a second group drank a coffee-flavored placebo drink, and the third group served as a control and didn’t drink any beverages.
The results showed that participants in the coffee group completed a 5km bike ride faster than participants in the placebo and control groups. They also found that the observed effect of coffee on cycling performance is similar between men and women.

LITTLE BIG TOWN’S NEW ALBUM FULL OF ‘MEANINGFUL MOMENTS’
Little Big Town‘s new album, Nightfall, includes 13 songs and was totally produced by the four group members for the first time in their career. The project is one of the band’s most intimate and special to date, as Karen Fairchild tells us: [“It’s a very special record, and we got to produce this one on our own and just really wrote a lot of songs. We could’ve done a double record (Kimberly Schlapman: Easy.), we had so much content and songs and so many meaningful moments.”]

BLAKE SHELTON KEEPS HIS EYES ON THE PRIZE
Last night the blind auditions continue on The Voice. Blake Shelton tries to remain true to his country music genre while looking for talent on the show, but he tells us he’s force to have a different mindset when it comes to the blind auditions. [“I’m always on the lookout for a great country singer, but I don’t always find that in these blind auditions, and so at the end of the day, all I really do is just hit my button for anybody that I think is great or that I can imagine hearing on the radio or even more imagine, you know, that they have the kind of voice and style that could win the show.”]
Blake recently announced the postponement of the last few shows on his Friends & Heroes Tour due to coronavirus concerns. Those rescheduled dates have not yet been announced.
