On Today’s Show

➢ A five-year-old girl from Alaska named Nova Knight has been doing videos about how to stay safe during COVID-19.  It’s the usual stuff about washing hands and staying six feet apart, but she’s very sincere, which makes it adorable.

She’s even gotten a shout-out from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

➢ A Toronto resident has taken their gaming to new heights by projecting video games onto the side of an apartment building. A reddit user posted a video of himself playing Mario Kart while it was projected in larger-then-life style onto the building across from him, with the caption: “Playing Mario Kart during quarantine be like.” It soon evolved into a nightly exhibition of retro games at 9pm.  He says he hasn’t received any complaints, and is considering playing movies so neighbors can watch from their balconies when it gets warmer. (When the government says ‘stay’, the people will play – video games…)

➢ A helicopter rescue was needed to airlift a man who had attempted to walk across a mountain range to Spain from France to buy cigarettes during a lockdown. A local mountain rescue service in the Pyrenees said the man was found “exhausted, shivering, cold and lost”. He was fined 135 euros for breaking coronavirus lockdown rules.

➢ A policeman who turned up to an apartment to break up a party was shocked to find a woman at home with her cat and having online drinks with her friends. A woman in Scotland had set up the video party to cheer her daughter, who had to celebrate her 13th birthday in lockdown. When a cop appeared on screen at her friend Melissa’s house, he explained to the online party that Melissa had been seen dancing with her cat, and neighbours had assumed she was having a party while the country is in lockdown.

➢ Carole Baskin has refused to appear in a reunion episode of “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness”. The animal rights activist – who has been very vocal in her criticism of the Netflix documentary about jailed zookeeper Joe Exotic – says she hasn’t been asked to appear, but she would turn down any offer if she were approached. Baskin has been outspoken against the documentary.

➢ In the new bonus episode of “Tiger King”, one of the participants says Joe Exotic was actually AFRAID of Tigers. Rick Kirkham, the guy who was producing Joe’s TV show, and lost all of his footage in a suspicious fire, said, quote, “Joe was terrified of big cats.  He was scared to death of lions and tigers.”

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Easter Monday”, celebrated in many ways in many places, including …
    – In Canada, it’s a federal government holiday

– In Washington DC, it’s the annual “Easter Egg Roll” on the south lawn of the White House, a custom which started on the US Capitol grounds about 1810 and was moved to the White House by President Rutherford B Hayes in 1877 (canceled this year due to COVID-19).

The Apollo 13 crisis happened 50 years ago today.  April 13th, 1970 was the day Jim Lovell told Houston there was “a problem.”  But the real line was slightly different from the movie version.  They actually said, “Houston, WE’VE HAD a problem.”  Pilot Jack Swigert said it first, then Lovell repeated it.  Here’s the actual audio.

TRISCUIT

On Twitter, internet sleuth Sage Boggs took a deep dive into the meaning behind Triscuit’s name. “Several years ago, I was at a party (BRAG!), and I spotted a box of Triscuits,” Boggs began. “I asked everyone, ‘What does the word ‘Triscuit’ mean?

It’s clearly based on the word ‘BISCUIT,’ but what does the ‘TRI’ mean?’The consensus was that “TRI” meant three. Three layers or three ingredients, though? So, he emailed Nabisco. The company responded saying, “No business records survived which specifically explain the origins or inspiration for the name Triscuit. But we do know the name was chosen as a fun derivation of the word “biscuit.” The “TRI” does not mean 3.”

He did some more internet sleuthing and came across some early Triscuit advertisements stating that the cracker was baked by electricity. “In the early 1900’s, Triscuit was run out of Niagara Falls. And their big selling point?

Being baked by electricity,’” said Boggs. “They were ‘the only food on the market prepared by this 1903 process.’ Look at the lightning bolts! And that’s when it clicked– Elec-TRI-city Biscuit. TRISCUIT MEANS ‘ELECTRICITY BISCUIT.’” The Triscuit twitter account was impressed and they confirmed Boggs’ theory. Triscuit crackers are named for electricity biscuits. The more you know.

GOOD NEWS

Isolation was wearing hard on the Roush family to the point that 8-year-old Charlie said he was “losing his mind.”

That’s when the Columbus, Ohio, family set up a “drive-thru chat,” encouraging area residents to pull up their driveway so that mom Corrine, dad Matt, son Charlie, and 6-year-old daughter Louetta could chat with them through their living room window.

“We’ve got a U-shaped driveway, so it’s perfect,” Nearly 40 people have stopped by within the last week, including police officers, the children’s teachers, and neighbors they’ve never before met.

They aren’t all drivers. Walkers, cyclists, and a motorcyclist have shown up, too. A sign directs people to visit between 11am and 3pm, and honk to get the family’s attention.

“It doesn’t matter what room we’re in, when we hear that beep, we come running to that window with huge smiles on our faces, and several people have told us that it was the highlight of their day.”

Do You Store These Eight Foods in the Fridge?

A recent online poll asked about different foods, and whether you store them in the fridge or not.

And over half-a-million votes were cast.  Here are eight random foods, and where we stand . . .

  1. Apples?  48% of us keep them in the fridge.  52% don’t.  Other fruits like oranges and lemons had similar results.

  1. Ketchup, after it’s opened?  88% refrigerate.  12% don’t.

  1. Bread?  Only 25% of people said they store it in the fridge.

  1. Peanut butter?  17% of people refrigerate it.

  1. Avocados?  55% said yes, they store them in the fridge.

  1. Tomatoes?  29% do NOT refrigerate them.

  1. Eggs?  90% said yes, and 10% said they don’t refrigerate.

  1. Butter?  86% store it in the fridge. 14% don’t.

(That’s another tricky one, because a lot of people leave one stick of butter out to keep it soft.)

ORANGE JUICE SALES ARE SOARING DURING THE PANDEMIC

Americans have been stocking up on all sorts of things as the pandemic continues, but one item in particular has seen a surge in popularity—and it really needed it. U.S. retails sales of orange juice jumped about 38 percent in the four weeks ending on March 28th compared to the same period of time last year.

This could be because orange juice is a typical go-to item when people get sick or are afraid they might. In 2018, a bad flu season drove up sales of the juice in the U.S.– likely because people think chugging orange juice is a good way to hydrate and load up on vitamin C—which hasn’t actually been proven to prevent colds.

Five Hacks to Make Groceries Stay Fresh Longer

We’re supposed to avoid the grocery store for the next week or two if possible.  So here are a few hacks that can make your food last a little longer . . .

  1. Put a paper towel in with your lettuce or spinach.  It absorbs the extra moisture and keeps greens from getting soggy and gross.

  1. Re-wrap your block of cheese.  It’s better if it gets a tiny bit of air.  So put it in something more breathable than plastic wrap, like wax paper.  Then put the whole thing inside a partially open plastic bag.  It’ll also taste better that way.

  1. Freeze leftover broth in ice cube trays.  A lot of recipes only call for a little bit of chicken stock, so don’t waste a whole bottle.  Freeze the rest so it’s easy to use later.

  1. Store fresh herbs the way you store fresh flowers.  Keep them upright in a glass with a little water in the bottom.  It’s the easiest way to lengthen their shelf life.

  1. Dry your produce really well after you wash it.  It’s normally best to not wash it until right before you eat it.  But you’ll want to wash it immediately right now because of the virus.  So just dry it well, or the extra moisture can make it rot faster.

CARLY PEARCE WRESTLING WITH ‘SCREECHING HALT’ OF TOURING

Carly Pearce is finding it hard to just sit at home and not be out touring and actively promoting her current single, “I Hope You’re Happy Now.” She says it helps that she’s married to a fellow artist, not to mention getting to commiserate with her artist friends who are all experiencing the same thing.

Carly tells us: [“It is not fun. It is really difficult to be holding all this new music and be so excited and have a tour that you don’t know if it’s going to happen and have all these plans for the year that kind of came to a very screeching halt. Thankfully we’re all in it together and we’re all trying to figure it out together, and hopefully we will be able to find creative ways to get to fans.]

Ashley McBryde took her amazing voice to the Ryman Auditorium to sing “Amazing Grace”.  Even though there was no audience, she had to get clearance from the Nashville Department of Health.  She did it because, quote, “We all need this right now and there isn’t a better place to sing it at [than] “the mother church.”
