On Today’s Show

➢ The World War Two vet who raised over $35 million for charity turns 100 years old TODAY . . . and he’s gotten more than 125,000 birthday cards in the mail.  The U.K. is honoring him with a special postmark.  Every letter that gets stamped by the British post office this week will say, “Happy 100th Birthday Captain Thomas.”

➢ Research from the University of California shows that playing “Tetris” has a remarkable effect on a person’s mental health and performance. During times of immense stress, such as undergoing final exams and considering future careers, students were instructed to play the video game before measuring their relative levels of perceived anxiety. Overworked individuals often experienced a significant reduction in stress and anxiety and an influx in positive emotions after playing Tetris.

➢ The cast of “The Goonies” reunited on Zoom for a new show called “Reunited Apart“, hosted by Josh Gad.  Most of the cast was on, plus Cyndi Lauper (who wrote and sang the theme), screenwriter Chris Columbus, and director Richard Donner.  They were later joined by producer Steven Spielberg.  Josh asked him the big question . . . What about a sequel?

➢ The astronaut was unmasked last night on “The Masked Singer”.  It turned out to be country singer Hunter Hayes.  On the follow-up show, he answered Twitter questions, like if it was hard to see through the mask, and if he’s single.

Half of Us Are Driving Around in Messy Cars . . . and One in Four Would Rather Clean a Toilet

A new survey found that 49% of people admit their car is usually a mess.  Here are eight more quick stats . . .

  1. When people were asked to name the dirtiest spot in their car, the top answers were the floor . . . the backseat . . . the cup holders . . . the dashboard . . . and the trunk.

  1. The top things that are currently junking up the inside of our cars are crumbs, empty bottles, food wrappers, old magazines, and blankets.

  1. Just over two-thirds of people with messy cars said it’s embarrassing when they have passengers.

  1. Seven out of 10 people said a messy car is a turn off.  And half of us would think about cancelling a date if the person showed up in a filthy car.

  1. 78% overall said a clean car makes them feel like they have their life together.

  1. 45% said containing the mess is hard, and can seem overwhelming.

  1. 24% of us don’t clean out our car because we know it’ll just get messy again.

  1. One in four people would rather clean their toilet than their car.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1. The Post-It Note was invented by accident, by a scientist at 3M who was actually trying to create a really STRONG adhesive.  Even the yellow color was by accident . . . the lab next door only had yellow scrap paper for them to use.

  1. Axe body spray is called Lynx in England, Ireland, Australia, China, and New Zealand because of trademark issues.

  1. There’s only one wild jaguar in the entire United States.  He lives in the Santa Rita Mountains near Tucson, Arizona.

  1. A total of 65 countries boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, and 14 boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.  But only two countries boycotted both . . . Iran and Albania.  They’re mad at everybody!

GOOD NEWS

Three teens in Texas built a site called Big and Mini.org that makes it easier for seniors to hang out with young people on Zoom.

A nurse in Texas couldn’t get to work because her battery died.  So a random guy in her apartment complex tossed her the keys to his Prius and told her to take it.  Then while she was at work, he had her battery looked at . . . and filled her tank with gas.

Two Jewish kids in Houston realized yarmulkes work pretty well as face masks.  So they have been collecting hundreds of them this month, and sewing elastic bands on.

A 27-year-old woman in Cincinnati who gave birth while she was on a ventilator has now beaten the virus.  Her new son is doing great too.

New Survey Says That the #1 Show That Should Be Brought Back Is . . . “M*A*S*H”?

At this point, it’s hard to think of TV shows that HAVEN’T been brought back . . . but Hollywood won’t stop until EVERY marginally successful show has been exhumed.

A new poll asked people which shows they’d like to see brought back . . . and somewhat surprisingly, the #1 answer was “M*A*S*H”, with 30% of the vote.

Maybe it makes sense.  The series finale is STILL . . . after 37 years . . . the most-watched TV episode of all time.  And there’s really nothing like it on TV now.

“ER” also scored 30% of the vote.

  1. A tie between “M*A*S*H”and “ER”, both with 30%
  2. “Friends”, 25%
  3. “Seinfeld”, 24%
  4. “Parks and Recreation”, 22%
  5. “Law & Order”, 20% . . . Guys, you do realize that “SVU”is still on, and that 1,171 original episodes of the “Law & Order” franchise have aired.  They could air repeats and just SAY it’s a reboot and no one would know.
  6. A tie between “The Golden Girls”and “Mad Men”, both with 13%
  7. “The West Wing”, 12%
  8. A tie between “How I Met Your Mother”and “Psych”, both with 11%

On the flipside, 40% of people said “American Idol” SHOULDN’T have been brought back . . . followed by “Will & Grace” (27%) and “MacGyver” (23%).

By the way, we’re assuming people were considering these REVIVALS or REBOOTS, since shows like “M*A*S*H” and “Golden Girls” wouldn’t have many former cast members, since they’re mostly either dead or retired.

Families Are Eating Earlier . . . and Eating Way More Desserts . . . Since the Quarantine

According to a new study, there have been two pretty big shifts in our eating habits since we all started staying inside.

  1. We’re eating earlier.  The average family now eats lunch before noon, and eats dinner in the 5:00 P.M. hour.

  1. We’re eating way more desserts.  One food delivery app found a 36% jump in people ordering desserts with their meals . . . with chocolate cake, strawberry cheesecake, and apple pie being most popular.

The study also found people are ordering more sides for delivery than before . . . and are getting delivery on weekdays way more than before.

FOOD TO BOOST YOUR MOOD:
Rather than reaching for that carb and calorie-laden comfort food during isolation, consuming healthy mood-boosting foods can deliver important brain nutrients while positively impacting your well-being…

⇒ Fish:  Yup. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish can result in substantial mental health benefits and protect from depression. Also good for cardiovascular health and brain development.

⇒ Green veggies:  Spinach, broccoli and Brussels sprouts are a source of folate, which is essential for the body’s production of serotonin. Researchers say that those with depression consume less folate than those without depression.

⇒ Probiotics:  Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi are good for keeping our digestive tract healthy, but recent research suggests that probiotics also play a role in reducing negative thoughts associated with sad moods.

⇒ Whole grains:  Oats, brown rice and whole wheat bread are rich in B vitamins, which are important for energy and optimal brain health. Their fiber also helps to keep blood sugar from spiking and leading to mood swings.

⇒ Vitamin D:  Egg yolks, fatty fish and fortified milks are not only good for bone health and immunity. Those with low vitamin D levels have been found to be more likely to be depressed.

⇒ Dark chocolate:  Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, a compound that may affect mood. It also contains healthful flavanols that have been shown to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and improve cognition. It may also boost serotonin levels

⇒ Coffee and tea:  A study showed that both may help protect against depression. They are sources of caffeine, which you know can give you a lift by having positive effects on mood and alertness.

  1. Some engineers in Maryland are turning breast pumps into ventilators.  They’re hoping to get the FDA to approve them, because they only cost $250 to make.

Here’s one of the engineers on how it all got started.

  1. Could this start a trend?  A family in Australia replaced part of their fence with clear plastic sheeting, so they can hang out with their neighbors.  The guy’s son had the best line.  Quote, “It’s really nice, because we can see humans.”

  1. This may be very relatable during these times of quarantine.  Comedian Paul Mecurio says his wife will go to great lengths to teach him a lesson.

OLD DOMINION’S MATTHEW RAMSEY SAYS ‘SOME PEOPLE DO’ WAS PERSONAL WAKE UP CALL

Old Dominion‘s latest hit, “Some People Do,” was a personal wake up call for the group’s lead singer Matthew Ramsey, who is also a co-writer on the song. While not getting into specifics, he reveals that immediately after finishing this song with Thomas Rhett and other co-writers, he decided to make a change. [“The moment that I reached for myself to ask for help was the day after I wrote this song, and this song made me want to be a better person and realized I need to be, and the next morning I made a phone call and started working on myself. I’m still working very hard.”]

Old Dominion just released a mini-documentary behind the moving video for “Some People Do,” which spotlights celebrity men’s groomer, Jason Schneidman. As clients of Jason’s, Old Dominion learned his poignant story of formerly being homeless and, after overcoming drug addiction, turned his life around. In his spare time, he helps out the homeless of LA, providing haircuts as a means to connect with those who may be battling addiction issues, and funds scholarships to rehab centers.

Carrie Underwood Turned Down a Collaboration with Florida Georgia Line

Back in February, FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE publicly asked CARRIE UNDERWOOD to collaborate with them.

In an Instagram post, they said they were HUGE fans . . . they always wanted to work with her . . . and they thought they had a HOT track to do it on.  They said they didn’t have her contact info, so they posted a video to tease the song.

But apparently, she wasn’t into it.  This week, Tyler Hubbard said, quote, “We got turned down on that one, you don’t win ’em all . . . I guess she didn’t love it as much as we did, but that’s alright.”

(Here’s video)
