On Today’s Show

➢ Even with the surge in COVID-19 cases, Churchill Downs has decided they WILL allow fans to attend this year’s Kentucky Derby.  It has been rescheduled for September 5th, during Labor Day weekend.  They say fewer fans will be allowed in, they’ll be encouraged to wear masks, but not required to wear one at all times.

➢ A bulldog allegedly stolen in Brampton, Ontario, has now been adopted by the woman who unknowingly bought the puppy from the suspects. Stephanie Barrantes was messaged by the illegitimate seller on Snapchat and sent two e-transfers totaling $1,000 for the dog. She never met the seller and agreed to pick-up the puppy at a park at a predetermined time and location . She wasn’t aware the puppy had been stolen and picked it up without meeting the seller because of Covid. With the help of police, she was able to connect with the puppy’s owner and has now become the rightful owner of Loki at no extra cost.

➢ An 86-year-old woman in Rhode Island wanted to do something to cheer people up.  So she used her stimulus money from the U.S. government to create a zoo for stuffed animals outside her house, and it’s a hit with kids.

➢ It’s a dirty job, but Mike Rowe’s gotta do it (again). Discovery Channel has ordered a “Dirty Jobs” sequel series called “Dirty Jobs: Rowe’d Trip.” He’ll host the four-episode show, which Discovery describes as “part reunion, part road-trip, part look-back-special, and part where-are-they-now.” In “Rowe’d Trip,” Rowe and the original “Dirty Jobs” crew will travel together in a mini-RV and reminisce about the good old days — and the grimy gigs he took on in the name of entertainment.

➢ Netflix trademarked “Space Force” almost a year before the US military did for the same name. The streaming service registered the name for its satirical show starring Steve Carrell, in Jan. 2019, while the trademark for the youngest branch of the military was founded in Dec. 2019. While some feel that the issue will become acrimonious, there is reportedly no bad blood between the two organizations about it at this time.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Camera Day”, which has unknown origins but it is always celebrated on June 29th. The day celebrates the camera and its value to society.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1.  The full version of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”is a feminist song about a woman who wants to go on a date to a baseball game, not a movie.

  1. When JFKwas single in 1941, he dated a journalist named Inga Arvad . . . who was one of Hitler’s personal guests at the 1936 Olympics.

  1. “Led Zeppelin 4”is the fifth-best selling album in U.S. history, with 23 million copies sold . . . but it was never number one on the Billboard charts.  It peaked at number two.

  1. The longest golf hole in the world is a 1,100-yard hole in South Korea.  It’s a par seven . . . and if you managed to get a hole-in-one, that would be called a phoenix.  If you did it in two shots, that would be called an ostrich.

GOOD NEWS

A woman in Washington state used her stimulus check to make hundreds of lasagnas for people.  She’s made over 1,200 in the last three months using her grandmother’s recipe.

After both of his parents got the virus, a 15-year-old in England created a wristband that senses when you’re about to touch your face and stops you.  It’s called VybPro, and he’s raising money for it on Kickstarter.

NEW YORK WOMAN NABBED WHILE ALLEGEDLY HANDING OUT BABY RACCOONS

Messing with baby raccoons is not a good plan. A woman in Niagara Falls, New York, was recently seen handing out baby raccoons outside a 7-Eleven.

Authorities say she handed out nine of them and that they’ve managed to recover seven of them so far–they note they are still on the hunt for “two potentially rabid raccoons.”

The Niagara County Department of Health said in a press release, “Possession of raccoons is illegal except by a licensed rehabilitator and presents a potential rabies hazard to anyone in direct contact with the animal.”

Burglar Gets Stuck in a Window and Has to Call the Fire Department

A 53-year-old burglar in England broke into an empty apartment building when he saw an open window.  But he didn’t find anything to steal, because the whole place was empty.

It turned out it was being remodeled.  So there was literally nothing to steal.  And once he realized that, he decided to leave. But on his way out, he somehow got his foot STUCK in a window . . . ended up dangling outside the building upside down . . . and had to call the fire department to come rescue him.

After they got him down, they called the cops.  And they found drugs on him.

It turned out he was looking for stuff to steal, so he could sell it and pay off a debt with his drug dealer. A judge sentenced him to 18 months of probation, and he has to go to rehab.

BBQ MISTAKES

Here are some common mistakes that we make when trying to barbecue dinner.  Pay attention and you won’t be serving up hockey pucks this weekend!

  • Not Brushing the Grill:  They are not self-cleaning. Bits of charred meat get stuck to them, and if you don’t remove them, they’ll attach themselves to your next rack of ribs.

  • Not Properly Heating the Grill:  Those gorgeous rows of sear marks only happen when the grill grates have time to get as hot as the fire. Cover the grill for 5-10 minutes after lighting.

  • Cooking Meat Until There’s No Pink Left Anywhere:  Pink chicken is bad. Don’t eat or serve that. But any red meat might retain some pink tissue even after reaching a safe minimum temperature.
  • Not Resting Your Steaks:  This has less to do with flavor or juiciness than it has to do with food safety. During a rest time after grilling, the meat’s temperature remains constant or continues to rise, which destroys harmful germs. (
  • Not Adding Moisture to Chicken:  Left on its own, chicken dries to a husk during cooking. Brine the chicken, use a marinade, or continuously baste the meat while cooking to keep it moist and delicious.

MONDAY JUNE 29TH

  1. Congrats to everyone involved in the June 27th Miracle in Windsor-Essex.

  1. The New England Patriots have signed CAM NEWTONto take over for TOM BRADY.  It’s a one-year deal, which could be worth up to $7.5 million.  Cam would have to compete for the starting job and prove he’s healthy. Cam is 31, and he became a free agent in March when the Carolina Panthers released him.  Brady, of course, left the Pats for the Tampa Bay Bucs.

The NBA released its schedule for the rest of its season, which is set to resume on July 30th.

22 teams will play in a closed-off “bubble” in Orlando, Florida.  Eight teams are done for the season:  The Timberwolves, the Warriors, the Hornets, the Bulls, the Knicks, the Pistons, the Hawks, and the Cavaliers. The first round of the playoffs is set to begin on August 17th, with the Finals penciled in for September 30th.

There are still plenty of questions, like:  How many extra roster spots will each team get, and would a player be replaced if he tests positive for COVID-19?

Not to mention what would happen if there was an outbreak among one of the teams, or the league itself.

There’s still some doubt that they’ll be able to pull this off.  More than a dozen players have already tested positive . . . and Florida, where the NBA will host their “bubble,” has emerged as a major COVID-19 hotspot over the past week.

  1. “The Young and the Restless” was named the year’s outstanding drama series, and “Jeopardy,” “The Ellen DeGeneres” and “The View” also won awards at the 47th annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which were handed out in a virtual ceremony on Friday evening. The broadcast was hosted by Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood, Carrie Ann Inaba and Marie Osmond from “The Talk.” Overall, “The Young and the Restless” led all shows with eight wins, followed by “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “General Hospital” with four and “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” “Jeopardy!” and “Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration” with three each. Alex Trebek was honored with the “Outstanding Game Show Host” award.
  2. For National Camera Day (June 29th), here’s comedian Norm Macdonald on how it USED to be, taking pictures.  (He says long ago, there would be only one picture of your great-grandfather.)

No winning ticket was sold for the $15 million jackpot in Friday night’s Lotto Max draw.

That means the jackpot for the next draw on June 30 will grow to approximately $20 million.

No winning ticket was sold for the $5-million jackpot in Saturday night’s Lotto 649 draw.

However, the guaranteed $1-million prize went to a lottery player in Ontario.

The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw on July 1 will be approximately $6 million.

There Wasn’t Much Social Distancing at Chase Rice’s or Chris Janson’s Concerts on Saturday

CHASE RICE and CHRIS JANSON did shows in different parts of the country on Saturday . . . and people are angry at both of them for, well, acting as if there’s no pandemic.

They each posted videos that didn’t show much, if any, social distancing.  Chase’s show was at Tennessee’s Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary.  It used to be a maximum-security prison, but now it’s a concert venue.

There were around 1,000 people, and the video on his Instagram Story shows the audience jammed shoulder-to-shoulder and singing along at the top of their lungs.  It’s hard to find anyone wearing a mask.  He took the clip down yesterday.

Chris was part of the Highway 30 Music Fest in Idaho and his video showed him playing to a “sea of fans.”  He also deleted his clip yesterday.

KELSEA BALLERINI hit up Twitter to call out Chase.  She said, “Imagine being selfish enough to put thousands of people’s health at risk, not to mention the potential ripple effect, and play a NORMAL country concert right now, we all want [and need] to tour.  We just care about our fans and their families enough to wait.”

THOMAS RHETT TRIES TO BE A LIGHT BY LEADING BY EXAMPLE

Thomas Rhett’s latest single, “Be A Light,” kind of speaks to the person he is, or tries to be, everyday. The song encourages people to be a source of positivity and goodness in a world that really needs it now more than ever.  [“One way I try to be a light for people is really just to lead by example.  Whether it’s just posting something positive on Instagram about my wife or about my family, or being a light through music. I really take pride in the way that I like to put positive, uplifting lyrics in my songs and really try to make sure that my music is suited for all ages and all ears.”]

Thomas is joined on “Be A Light” by special guests Keith Urban, Hillary Scott from Lady AReba McEntire and Contemporary Christian artist Chris Tomlin.
