➢ With many areas in a heat wave, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer says that you should skip the mask when it’s too hot and humid. Dr. Theresa Tam tweeted out a statement saying: “Non-medical masks or cloth face coverings can make breathing difficult in high heat & humidity. When outside in a #heatwave, 2m. #PhysicalDistancing is best.

Save the mask for indoors when you can’t keep your distance.” Other examples of when it is OK not to wear a mask include: when on a run or bike ride, walking your dog, or whenever you are able to keep a good distance away from others outdoors.

➢ A bar in England that was named after a slave trader has temporarily changed its name to “Ye Olde Pubby McDrunkface.”  (The name is possibly a nod to the ship named Boaty McBoatface.)

➢ A study of app usage has found that TikTok is almost as popular with kids as YouTube. The analysis of 60,000 families across the US, UK, and Spain found that kids age 4-15 spend 80 minutes a day watching TikTok videos, just five minutes less than they spend watching YouTube. It also found that kids are now watching twice as many videos per day as they did just four years ago.

Here’s a guy on TikTok demonstrating a great hack for your trash can lining.  (Instead of stuffing the bag inside of the basket and then pulling the rest over the sides . . . he puts the entire bag over the TOP of the can, and then pushes the middle straight to the bottom so there are no air pockets.  It works best for grocery bags in small wastebaskets.)

➢ Johnny Depp resurrected his “Pirates of the Caribbean” character, Jack Sparrow, to entertain sick kids during a virtual hospital visit. He suited up as his swashbuckling alter ego to perform for patients at Queensland Children’s Hospital in Australia during a Juiced TV charity special, which aired on Thursday. Depp ramped up his regular charity visits to medical facilities after his daughter Lily Rose was treated in London for E. coli poisoning in 2007. Depp told Graham Norton that when his daughter was ill, it was the darkest period of his life, and while he had always done visits like these, after that experience, they “became more and more important.”

AN UNWANTED SWIM

Firefighters in Connecticut rescued a man that fell nearly 30 feet down into a well when the flooring of a home gave way from underneath him.

He was helping move furniture into a friend’s home and plunged into the well, which was over 20 feet deep and 5 feet wide. The home his friend was moving into was built in 1843, and the well was likely located outside the home at the time, according to police. In 1981, an addition and some renovations were done to the home, the police said.

“At some point this well was covered with simple wood flooring and no subfloor or well cap,” police posted on Facebook along with images of the rescue.

He wasn’t able to touch the bottom and had to hold onto the stone wall until rescued by firefighters.  He only suffered minor injuries and Police say he was very lucky it wasn’t much worse.

‘GENIUS’ HACK SEES FAMILY TRANSFORM TRAMPOLINE INTO SWIMMING POOL

Pools are in high demand this year as much of the world remains on lockdown due to the pandemic.

But one family in Britain has improvised after not being able to find a pool.

The woman shared a video on TikTok of the family removing the mesh from the springs of their trampoline and then covering the base with a large tarp.

The tarp must be large enough to cover the base and the sides of the frame so that it creates the walls of a pool.

After placing the tarp, she wrapped the sides with industrial plastic wrap and black shrink wrap.

The woman says the total cost of making her trampoline into a pool was about $45. Her TikTok has been liked over 400,000 times, and many are calling the idea brilliant.

The U.S. Is Looking at Banning Chinese Social Media Apps . . . Including TikTok

The U.S. is considering banning TIKTOK.  Here’s why.  TikTok is owned by ByteDance, which is a tech company in China.  All companies in China are required to share their data with the U.S. government by law.

And there’s been some real concern that the Chinese government can use TikTok’s data for intelligence purposes . . . like location information, people’s pictures, and biometric info.  The U.S. Navy and Army have already banned TikTok.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says, quote, “We’re taking this very seriously” and they’re considering a ban on all Chinese social media apps, quote, “especially TikTok.”

TikTok pushed back, saying, quote, “TikTok is led by an American CEO . . . we have no higher priority than promoting a safe and secure app experience for our users.

We have never provided user data to the Chinese government, nor would we.”

SPORTS

Major League Soccer announced Tuesday (July 7th) that it has postponed the second match of the MLS is Back tournament after five players on Nashville SC, which was supposed to play Chicago Fire FC, tested positive for the coronavirus. That came after FC Dallas withdrew from the tournament on Monday after 10 players and one coach tested positive. The month-long tournament ending MLS’ coronavirus suspension is still set to open today with a match between Orlando City and Inter Miami. Games are being played without fans at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World.

The Washington Wizards’ leading scorer, Bradley Beal, and the Brooklyn Nets’ Spencer Dinwiddie won’t take part in the NBA’s restart. Beal is skipping the restart because he has a rotator cuff injury, and Dinwiddie said he won’t take part because he’s still testing positive for the coronavirus.

The Boston Red Sox said Tuesday (July 7th) that pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, who was projected to be their opening day starter, had tested positive for the coronavirus. It’s now unknown if he’ll still be able to make the start. The Kansas City Royals also announced that pitcher Brad Keller and first baseman Ryan O’Hearn had tested positive.

GRANGER SMITH CREATED BLUEPRINT FOR SOCIAL DISTANCING AT CONCERTS

Granger Smith has created a blueprint for social distancing at concerts and he’s using it. He came up with the plan for his 4th of July show and it included every imaginable scenario including seating, distance from the stage (about 30 feet), bathroom lines, and how fans leave a venue. His crew is not allowed to take off their masks and he and the band only takes theirs off as they step on stage.

To assure distancing at last weekend’s concert, he only sold 3,500 tickets for an outdoor venue that holds 12,000 people. The idea for the blueprint came about after the backlash Chris Janson and Chase Rice received from playing to packed crowds.

BRETT YOUNG’S NEW SINGLE WAS ‘OBVIOUS CHOICE’

Brett Young is climbing the charts with “Lady,” the first single from his upcoming studio album. He co-wrote the song about his wife, Taylor, for his infant daughter, Presley, and he tells us that it only made sense to release the song because it’s all about the life he’s living these days. [“In this chapter of my life, it is the most obvious choice for a first single as we’re putting out new music, and so I hope it’s as meaningful to people listening that have children or a family or are planning to. It is really, really special to my wife and I.  I can’t wait till my daughter is old enough to hear it and understand it and know that Daddy wrote her a song before she was even here with us. But it’s a special song for me and I hope it really resonates with people.”]

Brett recently charted his sixth consecutive Number One song with “Catch.”

THE LYRICS ARE TRUE IN LINDSAY ELL’S NEW SINGLE ABOUT RAPE – (07/08/2020)

The lyrics of Lindsay Ell’s new song ring true-to-life for her. In an interview with People.com she said, “I was raped when I was 13, and it happened again when I was 21.” She says it’s something that she still processes every day.

A man in her church that her family knew groomed her and eventually raped her. It wasn’t until she was 20 years old that she was able to confide in her parents. She said they had no idea and were horrified. After that she started going to therapy.

She was 21 when she was assaulted the second time.  That brought on depression and anxiety.  Quote, “I was pretty messed up emotionally.” She had a breakthrough about three years ago while visiting a Virginia-based crisis organization called Youth For Tomorrow.

Quote, “I sat down at this conference table with 12 girls and told my story.  As I told more of my story, they felt more inclined to share theirs.  I remember walking out of there just feeling so empowered and like I was 10 feet tall.”

When she was ready to share her story, she brought in Brandy Clark to help her write a song, and they came up with Make You . . . which addresses the range of emotions she felt after

Lindsay has also started the Make You Movement, which will benefit survivors of sexual assault and at-risk youth.

The release date for the song, “Make You,” was intentional. Lindsay said: “I wanted to release it on Global Forgiveness Day. Forgiving people in our past is a huge thing for whatever reason, but forgiving yourself is so important. There’s an incredible amount of healing that can happen, and it can’t happen until you can truly open up that forgiveness for your own heart.”

She wrote her new single with Brandy Clark.
