➢ A skydiver in Vermont recently lost his prosthetic leg when it fell off in mid-air.  He says he didn’t even realize it was gone at first, and wasn’t sure he’d ever find it.  But he posted on Facebook and asked people in the area to keep an eye out, and a random farmer found it on his property.

➢ According to Wham-O, Slip ‘N Slides have totally sold out this summer with most public pools and water parks closed or running limited hours.

They say that at one point, Slip ‘N Slide sales DOUBLED every day for 10 days.

And that’s not the only nostalgia toy they make that’s been selling like crazy.  Frisbee sales are up 500% and boogie board sales are up 300%.

➢ These days, you’re probably going out less and spending more time at home. And according to Unilever, that means you don’t need to wear deodorant as often, demand for personal care items, such as deodorant — and their brands Dove soap and Axe deodorant — have declined, while home consumption of their ice cream brands Breyer’s and Ben & Jerry’s are up 26% between April and June compared to last year. Sales of soups, meal kits and mayonnaise have also spiked during the pandemic.

➢ Ice-T was a guest on “The Tonight Show” last night and told Jimmy his father-in-law spent a month in the hospital and has permanent lung damage due to COVID-19.  (From “The Tonight Show” on Wednesday, July 29, 2020)

➢ “Schitt’s Creek” has broken the record for most Emmy nominations given to a comedy series in its final season with 15 nods in total. The show surpassed the previous record of 13 nominations set by “30 Rock” in 2013. “Schitt’s” nominations include one for each of the show’s four leads, including an outstanding lead actor nod for Eugene Levy, a lead actress nod for Catherine O’Hara, a supporting actor nod for Dan Levy, and a supporting actress nod for Annie Murphy. The show also got nominations for directing, and is one of 8 shows nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series.

GOOD NEWS

A new charity called “Put It on Pete’s Tab” is helping people in the service industry pay their bills.  A bartender in Florida named Pete O’Brien passed away in March, and he was a big fan of leaving huge tips.  So his friends started doing it as a tribute, and writing “Put It on Pete’s Tab” on the receipt.  Which led them to start the charity, and now they’re using donations to pay bills for servers and bartenders across the country.

A family in Ohio couldn’t pay their rent after the dad lost his job because of the pandemic.  But instead of kicking them out, their landlord told them to stay, and gave them $100 to help cover their other bills.  Quote, “If I was in [their] shoes, I would want someone to do the same for me.”

IF YOU AREN’T A MORNING PERSON, NEUROSCIENCE SAYS PLEASE STOP TRYING TO BE

Lots of famously successful people get up early, but that doesn’t mean you should.

You might be under the impression that being an early bird is related only to willpower and persistence, but research shows that when you prefer to rise is a matter of biology. Nearly half your chronotype—or your internal body clock—is inherited.

Most people have a circadian rhythm, or biological clock, that runs on a 24.2-hour cycle, but some people have internal clocks that run longer than that—meaning that, over time, they naturally fall asleep later and get up later.

It’s important to remember that studies show that early birds tend to be more persistent, self-directed and to be better planners, but they also show that night owls perform better on memory tests, have better processing speed, cognitive ability, and they also tend to be more creative and a little bit more financially successful.

So in other words—stop trying to force yourself to be a morning person, just run on the schedule that works for your body, because you can’t change your inherited biology.

DIRECT STREAM:
Elon Musk, who runs both SpaceX and Tesla, has announced that he wants to stream music directly into our brains. Yup, that’s his latest venture.

His startup “Neuralink” plans to make use of an implantable microchip, or a “brain-computer interface”, which will allow wearers to stream music directly into their brain, bypassing the ears.

He also says that Neuralink could help control hormone levels and use them to our advantage, whatever that means.

The implantation process, which he compares to Lasik laser eye surgery, will involve a neurosurgical robot that fits flexible “threads” into the brain connected to a tiny computer chip.

He promises more info about Neuralink on Aug. 28.

THURSDAY JULY 30TH

  1. L.A. Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly was suspended for eight games by MLB yesterday (July 29th), one day after a game against the Houston Astros in which he threw a fastball near the head of

Alex Bregman and taunted Carlos Correa. The game was the first between the two teams since it was revealed that Houston stole signs during their 2017 championship season, during which they beat the Dodgers in the World Series.

Meanwhile yesterday, during the Dodgers-Astro’s game, Jose Altuve struck out looking and announcer Orel Hershiser burned him by saying, “Guessing is harder than knowing.”

The restart of the NBA season begins tonight (July 29th) with games between the New Orleans Pelicans and the Utah Jazz, and the L.A. Lakers vs. the L.A. Clippers in the league’s “bubble” at Walt Disney World. Starting Friday and going through August 14th there will be at least four and as many as seven games per day on the three courts at the complex.

A 16-team playoff bracket will be finalized next month, and 12 of the 22 teams at Disney have already clinched spots based on their records before the season was suspended in March.

More NFL players are opting out of playing next season due to the coronavirus than many had expected, with some three dozen players already saying they are skipping the season.

The latest to say they’re opting out is Kansas City Chiefs running back Damien Williams, a key part of their championship run last season, who said yesterday (July 29th) he won’t be playing.

The world’s top-ranked women’s tennis player, Australia’s Ash Barty, said yesterday (July 29th) that she’ll be skipping the U.S. Open, which will be the sport’s first major since January, because she feels it’s too risky to travel for the tournament. The 24-year-old is the highest-profile player so far to opt out of the U.S. Open, which will begin on August 31st in Queens, New York.

  1. Well this isn’t a good look, especially on National Cheesecake Day.  A guy in Santa Monica, California waseating some Fettuccine Alfredo from the Cheesecake Factory when he bit down on something weird.  Turns out it was a latex glove.  Now his wife is worried he might have the virus.

  1. A guy in the U.K. pranked his ex-girlfriend by putting up signs asking people to call her number and do a Chewbacca impression.  She says it’s been a little overwhelming, but she also sees the humor in it.

  1. Rite Aid facial recognition systems, tech CEOs testify, and people over six feet tall are more likely to get coronavirus.  (From Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon, on Wednesday, July 30, 2020).

Randy Travis – Although his voice was silenced by a stroke in 2013, a previously unreleased recording was released yesterday. The demo ‘Fool’s Love Affair’ was made available to celebrate the release of his debut single ‘On the Other Hand’, 35 years ago this month. LINK: https://orcd.co/foolsloveaffair

Garth Brooks Has Permanently Pulled Out of CMA Entertainer of the Year Consideration

GARTH BROOKS has permanently pulled himself out of contention for CMA Entertainer of the Year.  He made the announcement yesterday during a press conference on Facebook Live.  He’s won the award seven times.

Garth told reporters and fans: [“The result of the millions of tweets was one little tweet that caught my eye, that made me go, ‘I need to fix that.’ And so, for eight months it has bothered me. But I gotta tell ya – there is a freeing feeling about me right now when I walk out of this building that I’m going to really, really, really enjoy where we stand as a band and crew, because it’s not going to change anything in our perspective. But I really love the fact that someone else is going to get to experience that Entertainer of the Year nod. That’s a wonderful thing.”]

There is a problem.  According to CMA rules, you can’t just remove your name from the balloting process.  Garth probably knew this because he tried to convince them to start an Entertainer of the Year Emeritus Award.  They said that’s not possible.

Here’s another wrinkle:  There’s already been one round of voting this year, and if he makes the cut he HAS to be on the second ballot, and voting for that starts tomorrow.  He’s hoping his announcement will convince people to NOT vote for him.

I guess we’ll know for sure in a few weeks when the final nominations come out.  By the way, Garth did say he’ll accept nominations in other CMA categories.  The 54th Annual CMA Awards will air in November on ABC.

BRAD PAISLEY RELEASES GLOBALLY-INCLUSIVE VIDEO FOR ‘NO I IN BEER’

Brad Paisley released the video for his current single “No I In Beer” yesterday (Wednesday, July 29th). The clip makes good use of Zoom video conferencing with appearances by Brad’s friends like Jimmie Allen, Kelsea Ballerini, Lindsay Ell, Clayton Kershaw, Peyton Manning, Tim McGraw, Darius Rucker and Carrie Underwood. At Brad’s request, fans from around the world — 39 countries to be exact — sent in video submissions for the clip.

Although Brad co-wrote “No I In Beer” a few years ago, a few tweaks made it current and the video is a perfect reflection of today’s unusal times. [“When I first re-wrote this song to fit the times we’re in one of the main changes had to be the opening line. The original opening line was ‘There’s a bunch of people comin’ over,’ and I knew that wasn’t the right sentiment, and it becomes a much better song which it’s ‘Wherever you are tonight, whatever you’re goin’ through,’ and so to have all these foreign countries, all these people everywhere from Ireland to Wuhan, China on this video who are literally in those locations gives it so much more gravity.”]

Brad himself edited the final video, which includes over 225 people globally.
