On Today’s Show

➢ Someone in Colorado talked to seniors, and asked them how the sacrifices we’re making for COVID compare to the sacrifices they made during World War Two.  (They basically said we’re too selfish, and people were more willing to come together back then.  They also think people should wear masks to stop the spread . . . even though it makes it harder to kiss.)

➢ Simon Cowell broke his back in several places while testing his new electric bicycle in the courtyard of his Malibu home on Saturday. A spokesperson says Cowell was taken to hospital, where he had surgery overnight, and is currently under observation and doing fine. He’s been in quarantine at home during the pandemic with his girlfriend Lauren Silverman and their young son Eric.

➢ Bugatti has announced that its newest vehicle is a $35,000 car for kids. Bugatti and the Little Car Company teamed up to make 500 miniature electric Bugatti’s. The company announced Friday (July 24th) that a few of the mini-electric cars will be made available for purchase.  The entire fleet sold out after it was unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, but CNN reports that due to the coronavirus pandemic, some customers have backed out on their deals. The new Bugatti Baby II is 75% of the size of a real Bugatti Type 35 and intended for young teenagers.  In expert mode, it can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour.

➢ Imagine checking your security camera footage and seeing your mail slowly walking away. The creepy moment was caught on the front porch of a St. Louis, Missouri home recently. A sped-up version of the video shows the package twisting and turning as if moved by an invisible hand as it navigates across a few feet of paving to a nearby flower bed. It turns out the package was being carried by ants—but it’s not clear why. It’s possible it contained sugar, which is beloved by the insects, which are capable of lifting objects ten to 50 times their own body weight.

➢ Charlize Theron was a guest on “The Tonight Show” and in the middle of a Zoom call with Jimmy, a picture fell off the wall behind her.  She blamed a ghost while Jimmy joked that he shot a spitball through the camera.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “S’mores Day” celebrating one of our favorite campfire treats, a toasted marshmallow sandwiched between graham crackers with piece of chocolate. The original recipe, published in Scout leader Loretta Scott Crew’s “Tramping & Trailing with the Girl Scouts” (1927), referred to the delicacy as “Some Mores”.

COUNTRY MUSIC NOTE

2013   With 22 weeks at #1, “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line set a new record for most weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, breaking a three-way tie of 21 weeks at #1 jointly held by Eddy Arnold (“I’ll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms),” 1947),

Hank Snow (“I’m Movin’ On,” 1950) and Webb Pierce (“In the Jailhouse Now,” 1955).

“Cruise” benefited from changes in Billboard’s methodology, made in 2012, from a country airplay-only chart to one that reflected all-genre airplay, music downloads and streaming.

A Study Found Neck Fleeces and Bandanas Are the Worst Face Masks

A new study at Duke University looked at 14 different types of face coverings to see which ones block the most particles.  And there were some clear winners and losers.

Overall, they found N95 masks work best and block the most particles.  Which isn’t surprising.

Disposable surgical masks were almost as good though.  And homemade cotton masks with multiple layers did well too.  They all offered good protection.

Knitted masks with bigger holes like a scarf didn’t block as many particles, for obvious reasons.  And bandanas didn’t do well either, partly because they’re single-layer.

But the worst mask by far were NECK FLEECES, also called gaiter masks.  They’re the ones you wear around your neck, and a lot of people use them when they work out.

They didn’t block a lot of particles though, and might actually make things WORSE.

The study found they broke saliva particles up into even smaller droplets that got through.  And smaller droplets can float around in the air longer, so they’re more likely to get someone sick.

GOOD NEWS

A 15-year-old kid in Alabama was out on a lake when he saw another boat that had caught fire.  So he called Police.

But then the boat started sinking while a police officer was tugging it away, and it pulled the police boat down with it.

So the same kid had to go back and rescue the cop.

EGGSISTENTIAL CRISIS:
We’ve always been told that it’s important to eat a good breakfast in order to “rev up” your metabolism for the day and to prevent overeating later. And that those who don’t eat in the morning actually tend to weigh more than those don’t.

But a new analysis of seven past studies has found just the opposite. The results, published in “The BMJ”, showed that those who skipped breakfast over a period of at least four weeks lost an average of 1.19 pounds, compared to those who didn’t .

There was no significant difference between the groups when it came to Body Mass Index or fat mass. The researchers concluded that while results showed those who don’t eat breakfast lost weight, skipping breakfast won’t have a significant effect on weight loss.

Instead it is the quality of breakfast that matters most.

57% of People Are Brushing Their Teeth More Now That They Smell Their Breath

When you wear a face mask, you get a lot of one-on-one time with your own breath.  And people aren’t loving that.

According to a new survey, 57% of people say they’re brushing their teeth more now because their mask has made them realize JUST how bad their breath actually is.

The survey also found 81% of people say bad breath is a turn-off, and 22% have ended things with someone because of their breath.

And the average person can only handle the nasty morning breath taste in their mouth for 14 minutes before they have to go brush their teeth.

Kane Brown’s Story About Getting Lost on His Own Property Is More Bizarre

KANE BROWN hit up Facebook on Thursday to radically change the story he told about getting lost on his own 30-acre property a while back.  First of all, his wife wasn’t with him.  It was Kane, a friend, and the friend’s girlfriend.

After they got lost, Kane called his songwriter buddy Ryan Upchurch, and he showed up with another guy.  But they weren’t much help, because before you know it, all five of them were lost.  And this is where it gets bizarre.

The Ryan Upchurch guy asked four of his friends to help, and while they were riding nearby, they started getting SHOT at.  That’s when the police were called.

Kane writes, quote, “[Then] the cops arrive and hear the gun shots and think we’re shooting at them.  We yell at them and tell them we’re not armed and made it out.  That’s the story, but I love the ‘getting lost in my back yard’ better.”

It’s not clear who was firing the shots . . . and there’s no word why Kane didn’t tell the true story in the first place.

DARIUS RUCKER RECOMMENDS ‘OZARK,’ ‘PEAKY BLINDERS,’ ‘BILLIONS’ DURING QUARANTINE

Darius Rucker is a TV buff and has spent a good deal of time exploring new shows and catching up on series he loves during quarantine. His latest suggestions include Ozark and Peaky Blinders on Netflix and Billions on Showtime.

[“Season Three of Ozark was just . . .  if you’re an Ozark fan, I’m not gonna spoil it for you, but the ending was just genius. Kill Kenny – I watch that show, and I just laugh constantly. It’s a Canadian comedy and it just kills me. Peaky Blinders – my favorite show of all time. It is some of the best television I’ve ever seen. Billions is friggin’ genius. The writing on that show and the acting and then you throw some music in too, you know, man, what a great show.”]

Darius will headline the live stream of his Darius & Friends benefit concert on Thursday (July 30th) at 8 p.m. ET. The show will also feature performances from Clint Black and Tracy Lawrence. For more information, go to Live Nation’s “Live at Home” link.

FAST FACTS

Darius will release a new single to country radio called “Beers And Sunshine” in August.

SHANIA TWAIN SIGNS ON AS TV PRODUCER

Shania Twain has signed on to executive produce an original series based on the #1 New York Times best-selling Heart of Texas novels. She will also be contributing original songs to the project.

The books tell the story of three adult siblings who, after the death of their parents, struggle to keep their family ranch running. Shania told The Hollywood Reporter, “There are some parallels in the story to my own story — a young family carrying on after the parents die, and the female main character having all this responsibility. I was thinking this sounds so much like my own life. And I’m drawn to horses and the whole lifestyle of living outside the city, where family is everything. It really spoke to me.”

The Heart of Texas novels were written by Debbie Macomber. More than 200 million copies of her books have been sold worldwide.
