On Today’s Show

➢ An Ontario town has voted down a ban on excessive noise that would have prohibited a number of everyday sounds. The proposed bylaw before Niagara-on-the-Lake council would’ve banned noise louder than 50 decibels (dB) overnight and 55 dB throughout the day.

A normal conversation is typically 60 dB. The bylaw also called for a ban on “yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling or singing” after 9 p.m., while also imposing a $350 fine for a number of common overnight sounds such as barking dogs, idling cars, snow blowers and musical instruments. The bylaw was proposed mainly to crack down on partying in short-term rental homes.

➢ Some people hide their stash of candy in a secret location, and some hide their stash of beer in a public library. Staff at a library in Walla Walla, Washington, have been changing the library’s layout while it’s closed to the public due to the pandemic. While working recently to move the mystery book collection to a different spot, a crew member removed a corner panel on some 1970s-era shelving with an open top. Behind it he found five unopened cans of beer, and a packet of opened gum. The City posted about the find on Facebook, noting they think the items have been there for “upward of 30 years.”

➢ Two frontline nurses in Miami lost their apartment in a fire late last month.  But then a teenager with a nonprofit called “Helping Hands” saw their story . . . found them a new place to live . . . and covered their rent for the first three months.

➢ “CSI” is coming back to TV and it’s bringing along some familiar faces. Reportedly, original series stars William Petersen and Jorja Fox are in negotiations to star in the event series revival “CSI: Vegas”. They played fan-favourite couple Grissom and Sara. Along with the returning stars, the new series will feature four new main characters. Originally, the plan was for “CSI: Vegas” to air in time for the show’s 20th anniversary in October, but it’s been delayed due to the pandemic. The plan now is for filming to begin this fall.

➢The “Golden Girls” house has sold for $4 million, which is a whopping $1 million OVER the asking price.

The exact price was $4,000,620, which is a LOT considering the house doesn’t even look like the “Golden Girls” house on the inside.  It was only used for the EXTERIOR shots.

Then again, it isn’t located in the middle of nowhere . . . or even Florida for that matter . . . it’s in the highly-desirable Brentwood area of Los Angeles.

It has four bedrooms, and is 2,901 square feet.

The house received 20 offers in 14 days . . . resulting in a BIDDING WAR among nine people.

There’s no word on who bought it . . . but sadly, it was NOT BETTY WHITE.  “People” said the bidders were not celebrities.  It’s unclear if that includes HGTV, which purchased the “Brady Bunch” house back in 2018.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Fajita Day”, originally made from throwaway cuts of beef by Mexican chefs in Southwest Texas, the fajita was developed as a regional staple in the early 1930s. These cowboys cooked the steak over an open fire or grill and served it with flour or corn tortillas.

1922 [98] The first ‘Caesar Salad’ is concocted in Tijuana, Mexico (named for Caesar’s Restaurant).

CARDBOARD ABROAD:
I’ve heard of people stealing copper and I’ve heard of people stealing metal, but I’ve never heard of people stealing…cardboard. Until now.

Apparently, thieves are making a fortune by stealing “beige gold” that has been left out to be recycled, and selling it. That, of course, means legitimate recycling firms, and the city or county who usually get a cut of the sales, are missing out on tend of millions of dollars.

The issue has been brought to light in Spain, where a division of the Spanish Guardia Civil police force has been brought in to help stop gangs from stealing cardboard.

It’s been estimated that almost half of all cardboard put into recycling in Madrid is being stolen. Apparently, criminals set up companies that mix illegally collected cardboard with some that is legitimately sourced, and export it to Asia.

GOOD NEWS

A group of young men from the Edmonton area inspired many by recently carrying their friend up a canyon trail near Canmore, Alta. to view a waterfall.

Aaron Friesen, who has spastic bilateral cerebral palsy as a result of a lack of oxygen at birth, has been in a wheelchair his whole life. On Sunday, Aug. 2, the group of five set off on the four kilometre hike to the waterfall and back on a route that included rough and steep terrain.

“At first, the guys just took turns using brute force and tried to push my chair up that mountain,”.  After struggling to push his wheelchair up the trail, one of the guys came up with the idea to stick logs underneath the wheelchair and carry Aaron.

“We just wanted to see the waterfall, and Aaron goes wherever we go,” said Peters.

“I will admit, I was a little nervous,” said Friesen. “I always am when we do these hiking trips. It’s so much fun, though. The laughter, adrenaline and feeling of accomplishment you get after completing a task like this is unreal!

The friends, who met through different church events and outings in Edmonton, have known each other for several years.

The act captured the attention of Mary Dorchester who was also at the canyon. She posted a photo of the young men on her Facebook page hoping to identify them and get their story out to the public. “These young men totally need super attention to what kind hearts they have,” Dorchester wrote in her Facebook post.

MATTRESS SALES ARE BOOMING

People have been spending a lot more time at home since the pandemic began in March, and as a result, mattress sales are booming. Mark Abrials, chief marketing officer at mattress company Avocado says, “People are spending so much time at home and less time and money eating out or going on vacations.

People are putting more money into the home next and other things that make them feel good.” And it’s not just traditional mattresses that are getting all the attention—the increase in people working from home means adjustable mattresses are seeing an uptick in sales as well.

Furniture e-commerce site Wayfair also reports it’s seeing an uptick in sales across all categories—they added some five million new customers last quarter, which is more than the company netted in the past year.

A Couple Is Busted for Going on a Naked Dog Walk

The cops in Hopkinton, Massachusetts got a call around 6:30 A.M. on Monday about a couple who was walking their dog . . . NAKED.

To clarify, the couple was naked.  I guess technically the dog was naked too . . . but the couple’s nudity is what led to the cops getting involved.

When the cops tracked down the couple, 32-year-old Mariel Kinney and 30-year-old Kevin Pinto both took off running.

They also started attacking when the cops caught up with them . . . and they were both arrested for indecent exposure, assault and battery on a police officer, disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

So WHY were they naked?  The cops say Mariel and Kevin wouldn’t give them a straight answer.  But the cops DID say their dog Lucy is a, quote, “very good dog.”

MADDIE & TAE HIT BASED ON TAE DYE’S REAL HEARTBREAK

Maddie & Tae’s Tae Dye had an emotionally exhausting experience while writing their current hit single, “Die From A Broken Heart.” She and Maddie Marlow and their other co-writers delved into Tae’s real life heartbreak to create what could be the duo’s second Number One hit.

[“We wrote ‘Die from a Broken Heart’ two weeks after an actual break up that I had gone through. It’s hard for me to really dig into my emotions in the midst of my emotions. I’m more of like an after the point, and then I can kind of revisit it and work through everything, but I turned off my emotions for the most part during that writing session just to look at it from a logical and practical standpoint, just so that I wasn’t a mess during writing it. But that was probably the hardest one just because I felt everything that the song says.”]

“Die From A Broken Heart” sits at Number Two on the country charts.

FAST FACTS

“Die From A Broken Heart” is the second single from Maddie & Tae’s sophomore album, The Way It Feels.

The album was released in April, five years after the release of their debut album, Start Here.

HANK JR., MARTY STUART, DEAN DILLON HEADED INTO COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME

Hank Williams, Jr., Marty Stuart and songwriter Dean Dillon are all headed into the Country Music Hall of Fame this fall. Williams will be inducted in the “Veterans Era Artist” category; Stuart in the “Modern Era Artist” category; and Dillon in the “Songwriter” category.

Stuart said the honor leaves him at a loss for words. [“It’s family to me. I’ve always considered the Country Music Hall of Fame — I’ve said it — it is our ultimate treasure chest. It is the greatest living room that the family of Country music has together, and I’ve always felt like I was a part of it, but to be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame, it is beyond words. I’m usually not at a loss for words.”]

Blake Shelton Got Owned by Luke Bryan on Twitter

If there was battle of the wits between BLAKE SHELTON and LUKE BRYAN, my money would be on Blake.  He’s vicious.  And funny.  But I may change my mind if Luke keeps this up.

Here’s what I’m talking about.  Blake made a post on Twitter yesterday showing Luke’s face . . . and underneath there was a fake news headline that read, “Study finds falling asleep at the wheel linked to Luke Bryan music.”

He captioned it, quote, “Wow!  Just catching up on the news.  Shocking.  I have noticed some fatigue when @Luke-Bryan comes on.”

Not bad . . . but Luke’s reply topped it.  He wrote, “@Blake-Shelton, your girlfriend is the only reason people are listening to your last two singles.”  (And . . . mic drop.)

While we’re on the subject:  Luke Bryan and DARIUS RUCKER did the no-audience Grand Ole Opry show last Saturday.  They performed their own songs as well as a great cover of Brooks & Dunn’s “Neon Moon”.     (Here’s video.)
