On Today’s Show

➢ A Florida man spent two weeks living it up in a stadium’s luxury suite before getting caught. Local news reports say Daniel Alberta Neja helped himself to food, drinks and merchandise at the Al Lang Stadium, which is home to the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer team.  According to an arrest affidavit, Neja stole over $1,000 worth of clothing and consumed about $250 in drinks before getting caught by he cleaning crew.  The 39-year-old was arrested and charged with burglary and resisting an officer without violence

➢ A woman in Houston named Karen De Amat runs a marketing company called Social Behavior.  She teamed up with a restaurant in Texas and held “Karen Day” on Monday and gave free food to anyone named Karen.  About 40 showed up.

➢ The pandemic has caused another shortage—this time of aluminum cans. The issue is that customers are buying aluminum canned drinks now more than ever before. People stocking up on groceries during the beginning of the pandemic turned to aluminum cans because they’re easier to store and stack than glass or liter bottles.

A spokesperson for Ball, a can manufacturer, says they are doing what they can to keep up with demand. Still, many frustrated pop fans have been tweeting at their favorite companies asking why it’s so hard to find their products in stores.

➢ The much-anticipated sequel to “Bird Box” – the book that became a smash-hit Netflix film starring Sandra Bullock – is finally finished, and the plot is described as: “Twelve years after Malorie and her children rowed up the river to safety, a blindfold is still the only thing that stands between sanity and madness. One glimpse of the creatures that stalk the world will drive a person to unspeakable violence. There remains no explanation” Netflix is currently developing the movie version of the sequel.

➢Jim Belushi has an interesting side hustle: He’s a POT GROWER.  He bought a 93-acre farm in Oregon just as the state legalized it.  And now he’s got a three-part show about it on Discovery, called “Growing Belushi”.  (Part 1 aired last night.)  He believes his brother John’s drug and alcohol abuse was fueled by head injuries, and weed would have helped. Quote, “If Johnny was a pothead, he’d be alive today.”

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Lemonade Day”, honoring the old-fashioned Summer refreshment favorite. Many sources say that lemonade was invented in Paris on this day in 1630.

  • “Radio Day”, for no apparent reason other than someone penciled it in on a calendar years ago. To celebrate, all on-air personalities get a hefty raise and a day off. (In my dreams…)

  • “World Mosquito Day”, commemorating the 1897 date when British doctor Sir Ronald Ross discovered the link between malaria transmission and mosquitoes.

  • “Bacon Lovers Day”, saluting one of the oldest of all processed meats. The Chinese began salting pork bellies as early as 1500 BC.

STUDY SAYS:
☞ Mosquitoes from areas with dense human populations and dry climates are more likely to feast on humans. That’s according to a team of Princeton researchers. Their study concluded that mosquitoes from areas with a rainy season followed by a long, hot, dry season are more likely to congregate near (and therefore bite more) human beings. This is because mosquitos need water to nest their eggs, and humans are the only animals that have figured out a way to bring a reliable, consistent water source to areas that turn arid for months at a time.

☞ A study by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that as salaries increase, so do hours of sleep per night. According to the study, the further away someone is from the poverty line, the more they sleep. Of the nearly 140,000 US adults surveyed, only 55% of those living below the poverty threshold reported getting a full seven to eight hours of rest each night. Meanwhile, 66.6% of adults making 400 percent above the poverty threshold reported regularly getting a full night’s sleep

GOOD NEWS

What’s the Nicest Thing a Stranger Has Ever Done for You?

A thread on Reddit is going viral after someone asked people to name the nicest thing a complete stranger has ever done for them.

  1. A guy was at a bar with his girlfriend when a random dude walked up and said they seemed like a sweet couple.  Then he handed them two free tickets . . . said he couldn’t go at the last

minute . . . and they were front-row seats to see PRINCE.

  1. A guy on a bus was talking to his wife about how broke they were.  Then someone said he dropped cash on the ground, and handed him $40.  The guy knew he HADN’T dropped any money.  They just said that so he wouldn’t be embarrassed accepting it.

  1. A woman got harassed on the subway, and an older dude scared the guy off.  Then she got off to get a transfer, and thought the older guy just happened to be going the same way.  They waited on the platform together until her train came, then he left.  Turned out he’d SKIPPED his stop, just to make sure she got home safe.

NEARLY 75% OF DOG OWNERS LET THEIR PETS SLEEP ON THE BED WITH THEM

People are getting closer with their pets as the pandemic continues. A new survey finds that 64 percent said they’ve taken more walks with their dog during quarantine, and 74 percent report happily sharing their bed and/or couch with their pooch.

Experts say that you have to be careful with letting your dog in your bed depending on where they’ve been.

It’s National Radio Day . . . and Two-Thirds of People Listen Daily

Today is National Radio Day

Here are some results from a survey for National Radio Day that show just how much everyone loves us . . .

  1. More than two-thirds of people listen to the radio DAILY.
  2. Just about HALF of people like to sing along with the radio . . . with women much more likely to sing along than men.
  3. 13% of people pick one radio station and never change it no matter what’s on.

Although many sites list an American station as the first broadcaster, in fact it was a station in Canada, XWA that was granted the first broadcast licence on this day December 1st, back in 1919. XWA, was a Marconi station in Montreal and the call letters stood for “experimental wireless apparatus”.

By 1922, there were 39 radio stations in Canada. That growth was matched with radio sales, as 52,500 radio sets were sold in Canada in 1928. By 1931, that number had jumped to 173,200.

CFCO – “Coming from Chatham Ontario”, has been around since 1926 making it one of Canada’s oldest radio stations.

In 1920, Westinghouse, one of the leading radio manufacturers, had an idea for selling more radios.  It would offer programming.

On November 2, 1920, station KDKA in Pittsburgh made the first commercial broadcast (a term coined by Conrad).  They chose that date because it was election day, and the power of radio was proven when people could hear the results of the Harding-Cox presidential race before they read about it in the newspaper.

In addition to selling online, Payless plans to open 300 to 500 stores across North America over the next five years, beginning with a first prototype store in Miami. Payless says the stores will have an updated design, which will include things like smart mirrors and touchscreen wall panels, but offer the same footwear, accessories and apparel it did before.

  1. Some officials in Cambridge, Massachusetts want to have unarmed civilians conduct traffic stops instead of cops.  Some peoplethink it would make traffic stops safer for minorities, but not everyone thinks it’s a good idea.  (Here’s a parking enforcement guy that’s against it, one guy that’s for it and the mayor.)

MACAULAY CULKIN ON TWITTER

Macaulay Culkin tweets some funny stuff.  First of all, his Twitter handle is “Incredible Culk“.  Here are just a few of the “Home Alone” stars recent tweets.

“I feel bad for all the burglars who never had the confidence to rob a house on Christmas thanks to me.”

“I like flowers because they’re like grass that put on a fancy hat.”

“I just woke up and saw that I was trending.  Can someone explain what’s going on?  Did I die again?”

“I love fog because it’s the closest I’ll ever get to being hugged by a cloud.”

Dolly Parton on Black Lives Matter, the Word “Dixie” . . . and How She Outsmarted Elvis

Dolly Parton was asked about several things in a new interview with Billboard. They asked her about the Black Lives Matter movement, and she leaned in.

Quote, “I understand people having to make themselves known and felt and seen.  And of course black lives matter.  Do we think our little white behinds are the only ones that matter? No!”

It was a couple of years ago when Dollywood changed the Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction to Dolly Parton’s Stampede.  Here’s why she made that call.

Quote, “There’s such a thing as innocent ignorance, and so many of us are guilty of that.  When they said ‘Dixie’ was an offensive word, I thought, ‘Well, I don’t want to offend anybody.

“‘This is a business.  We’ll just call it The Stampede.’  As soon as you realize that [something] is a problem, you should fix it.”

And if you think THAT was a good business move, wait till you hear THIS.  Back in the ’70s Elvis wanted to do a cover of a little song she wrote called “I Will Always Love You”.

He insisted on splitting the publishing rights.  So Elvis would’ve owned one-half of the song that Whitney Houston turned into a global hit some 20 years later.

Dolly said, quote, “That was one of the hardest things I ever had to do because I loved Elvis.”

LUKE BRYAN

Luke Bryan – says his hit ‘One Margarita’ has a downside. He told Seth Meyers that while the song is titled ‘One Margarita’, its protagonist actually drinks three margaritas and a shot. And that has become a popular drink order for fans to send Bryan and his wife when they are dining out. Bryan says he appreciates the gesture, but “I don’t really need to black-out at me and my wife’s go-to restaurant.”

Luke was ALSO on the FBE YouTube channel trying to sing “100 Country Songs in 10 Minutes.”  They’d show a song title, and he had to sing a little.  Some he knew but couldn’t remember, some he didn’t.  He had 51 right when time ran out.
