➢ An asteroid is heading towards the planet ….. the day before the U.S. election.

The object is projected to come close to Earth on November 2, It’s very small, approximately 6.5 feet, and poses no threat to Earth. If it were to enter our planet’s atmosphere, it would disintegrate due to its extremely small size,” NASA said in a statement.

NASA says that, “based on 21 observations spanning 12.968 days,” the agency has determined the asteroid probably — won’t have a deep impact, let alone bring Armageddon.

The chance of it hitting us is just 0.41%, data show.

➢ The Cannonball Run record has been broken again for at least the third time since the pandemic started.  Back in April, someone claimed they did it in 26 hours and 38 minutes.  Then in May, someone did it in 25 hours and 55 minutes.  The new record is 25 hours and 39 minutes.  They did in a 2016 Audi S6 that was disguised to look like a cop car.

➢ An Israeli jewelry company says it is making the world’s most expensive mask – to the tune of US$1.5 million. The 18-carat gold mask will be decorated with 3,600 white and black diamonds and fitted with top-rated N99 filters. The Designer says person who ordered the mask has asked that it be completed by the end of the year, and requested that it be the most expensive mask in the world. The buyer hasn’t been identified, but they did reveal that he is a Chinese businessman who is living in the United States.

➢ Friday’s scheduled “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” charity table read was postponed due to ”insurmountable technical issues”. Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Morgan Freeman, Henry Golding, Brad Pitt, Jimmy Kimmell, Matthew McConaughey and original star Sean Penn had all signed up for Dane Cook’s “Feelin’ A-Live” virtual event raising money for Penn’s humanitarian charity CORE and the REFORM Alliance. The special event was scheduled to be broadcast on Facebook and TikTok. Cook says a new date and time will be announced soon.

➢ David Spade says he and Chris Farley got into a huge fight on the set of “Tommy Boy”, because Spade had a drink with Rob Lowe and didn’t invite him.  Chris was so mad he stepped on David’s hand, smushing his tuna sandwich.  He then pushed him down a small set of stairs and tackled a crew member.  (From “Literally! With Rob Lowe” podcast.)

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Peach Pie Day”, honoring the seasonal dessert made from flour, sugar, butter, and freshly-picked juicy peaches.

  • “Waffle Day”, celebrating the anniversary of the invention of the ‘Waffle Iron’ by Cornelius Swartwout of Troy NY on this day in 1869. Other inventions attributed to today’s date include ‘Potato Chips’ (Chef George Crum, Saratoga Springs NY in 1853) and the ‘Motion Picture Camera’ (Thomas Edison in Menlo Park NJ, 1891).

  • “Can Opener Day”, Peter Durand invented canned food in 1813, but the can opener wasn’t invented until almost 50 years later. How did people open canned food before the can opener? The instructions on an 1824 can of roast veal read, “Cut round on the top near to the outer edge with a chisel and hammer.” (another method: https://tinyurl.com/pm6r9xd***)

A Guy Uses Bud Light to Put Out a House Fire

There’s a guy named Chad Little in Vacaville, California, and last week, one of the wildfires in California was spreading toward his house.

His neighbors were fleeing, but he decided to stay behind and try to keep the fire from getting to his home and his shop that’s attached.

He was using his hose to fight the fires, but his water suddenly got turned off.  He knew if he could get some wood to stop burning, that could probably keep his home safe until the fire department arrived.

So he grabbed a 30-pack of BUD LIGHT and started dumping it on the wood.

Quote, “I was just shaking it up, popping it and spraying them, and grabbing another one.  My buddies all tease me about drinking water beer and I say, ‘Hey, saved my shop.'”

The fire department got there after he used the Bud Light on the wood and took care of the rest of the fires around his house.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1. Trampoline was originally a trademarked brand name, and the generic term was “rebound tumbler.”  But trampoline eventually became genericized, like Aspirin, Kleenex, and Thermos.

  1. Officially, six people died in the Great Fire of London in 1666.  And at least seven people have died by falling off of the monument built to commemorate it.

  1. The term “soap opera” comes from old dramatic radio shows from the 1920s and ’30s that were sponsored by Procter and Gamble.  They would use the shows to plug their soap products.

  1. When Doritos launched in 1966, they were just plain corn tortilla chips.  The nacho cheese powder wasn’t added until 1972.

GOOD NEWS

It seems lightning has struck twice in Cape Breton’s Victoria County, where a couple has won their second significant lottery prize in seven years. They were the lucky winners of a Lotto 6/49 jackpot worth $17.4 million.

But the couple are no strangers to winning the lottery. The Lillingtons also won a $3.2-million Lotto 6/49 jackpot back in 2013 — on a ticket they bought at the same store. They admit it’s hard for them to believe they could be so lucky — twice.

The couple says their first win set them up for retirement, allowing them to purchase a new home, new vehicles, and fulfill most of their travelling dreams. This time around they plan to share much of their winnings with family and loved ones, including their five children and six grandchildren.

They aren’t the only winners. Atlantic Lottery rules stipulate that when a winning ticket is sold at retail, the retail venue receives one per cent of the winning amount. In this case, owner has received $174,000 — a significant amount of money for a rural business that has been struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Guy Jumps Off a Balcony While Fleeing Police and Lands on a Wasp Nest

Cops in Germany tracked down a 32-year-old guy after he failed to show up to serve an 11-month prison sentence.

And he tried to run, then jumped off a balcony.  But apparently he didn’t look before he leapt . . . because he landed directly on a WASPS’ NEST.

The wasps continued stinging him while he ran out into the street.  Then cops tried to arrest him, but THEY started to get stung.  So he slipped away.

The wasps followed him though, and kept attacking.  And his only choice was to jump into a nearby pool.

Police closed in and took him to jail.  Now he could be facing additional charges for fleeing from police.

Guy Steals a Logging Truck and Accidentally Crushes His Own Vehicle with It

A 36-year-old guy in Elliot Lake in Northern Ontario named Gaetan Henry got his truck stuck on a bridge in the middle of nowhere last week.  So he decided to steal a piece of construction equipment to get it out.

He took a skidder from a nearby logging company.  They’re like front-end loaders with a huge claw or plow on the front to move logs around.

But he didn’t know what he was doing.  So he lost control of the skidder . . . and accidentally crushed his OWN TRUCK by running it over.

He followed that up with another bad decision to report his truck STOLEN.  And as soon as cops looked into it, they realized what happened.

He’s facing charges for public mischief and theft of a motor vehicle worth over $5,000.  He’s due back in court in October.

DINNER TIME:
A new study says that a late dinner can dramatically raise your risk for developing obesity, and many other health concerns.

Don’t worry, grabbing a late bite on occasion isn’t going to hurt you. But the study from Johns Hopkins University found that people who ate dinner at 10 pm regularly burned significantly fewer calories in the 4 hours after eating compared to those who ate dinners at 6 pm.

Also, the peak glucose levels for late-eaters were roughly about 18% higher, and the amount of fat burned overnight was 10% lower.

THE BOX OFFICE THIS WEEKEND

The Box Office has been DEAD for 24 weeks thanks to the pandemic . . . but it began opening up this weekend, for the first time since everything shut down in mid-March.

Of course, the industry is still a ways away from pre-pandemic, when the Top 10 was collectively averaging more than $100 million each weekend.  This weekend, the Top 10 grossed under $6.5 million.

The RUSSELL CROWE thriller “Unhinged” was the “winner,” debuting in more than 1,800 theaters and grossing about $4 million in the U.S.

It cruised to the win with virtually no competition, but it’s still in the red.  It wasn’t supposed to be a blockbuster, but it cost around $33 million to make, so it still has some ground to cover.

“Unhinged” is currently on general release in many markets.

If you’re planning to see it, please observe the various safety protocols.

Next weekend, Disney is launching its “X-Men” spinoff “New Mutants”, and the week after that, the thriller “Tenet” will be out.

  1. Some residents of the Gulf Coast were evacuating Sunday (August 23rd) as the region readied for the possibility of two hurricanes hitting one right after the other, one from the Gulf of Mexico and the other from the Caribbean. The potential danger zone stretches from Texas to Alabama. Experts say the combined effects of the two storms in succession could bring two feet of rain to parts of Louisiana and several feet of potentially deadly storm surge.

Firefighters battling three huge wildfires in Northern California raced Sunday (August 23rd) to make preparations ahead of forecasted weather conditions that could make the fires worse, including high winds and more lightning strikes, which is what caused many of the blazes there and in other parts of the state.

A fire commander in California had his wallet stolen out of his car and his bank account drained while he was fighting the wildfires.  (Here’s Santa Cruz County Sheriff Jim Hart talking about it on Sunday.  He said he’s confident they’ll catch the person who did it.)

  1. A woman who’s been quarantined with her elderly parents posted a great videoof them lying in bed, singing about how much they love each other.  They’re 96 and 92, and they’ve been married 73 years.

  1. Comedian Jim Gaffigan is very honest about how lazy he is.

THOMAS RHETT WANTS A MAROON 5 CUT

Thomas Rhett undoubtedly writes some huge country hits, but he’d like to test the waters of pop music as a songwriter. He tells us: [“As my career goes I think it would be really fun to take a three or four month span where that’s all I tried to do. Maybe go to L.A. and, I don’t know, try to become friends with Adam Levine, try to get on those records.  But right now it’s been a lot of fun for songs that I know that I’m not gonna cut. I’ll send ‘em to Jason or I’ll send ‘em to Luke or I’ll send ‘em to Morgan Wallen or whoever it is and just take a shot in the dark.  And sometimes they get cut and sometimes they don’t. But I think it’s the songs that don’t get cut that make the ones that do, because I think you have to write and write and write until something that you love a lot comes out. And then those are the songs that end up making the record.”]

Of course, Thomas’ songs have already been recorded by Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean and Rascal Flatts.

He also co-wrote his own latest hit, “Be A Light,” which features Reba McEntire, Keith UrbanLady A‘s Hillary Scott and Christian artist Chris Tomlin. The song sits at Number Six on the Mediabase chart this week.

KANE BROWN SELLS HOUSE THAT WAS HOME TO BOTH HE AND JASON ALDEAN

Kane Brown is selling his former home in Franklin, Tennessee. It’s the same house allowed Jason Aldean and his family to live in last year as they waited for their new home to be built. Kane bought the 4,493-square-foot house in 2018 for $829,000 when it was newly built. The property includes 4-bedroom and 3.5-bathrooms on 1.15 acres of land. The home is listed for $910,000. Kane and his wife, Katelyn, moved into their current home earlier this year. Their new property sits on 30 acres of land, the same land that Kane recently talked about getting lost on and having to call police for help.

Kane released a new EP called Mixtape Vol. 1 on Friday featuring collaborations with Swae Lee and Khalid and John Legend.
