On Today’s Show
August 26, 2020 9:35 am➢ Police in Brockville, Ontario say a homeowner recently ignored when their parrot squawked “hello” last Monday but a neighbor snapped a photo of a man leaving the residence, which police were able to match to surveillance footage of a person using the parrot owner’s credit card to make purchases at a nearby business. The 33-year-old man was arrested the following day, and has been charged with breaking and entering, theft, and use of a stolen credit card.
➢ Youths volunteering at an archaeological dig in central Israel have found 425 gold coins that had been buried in a clay jar for 1,100 years.
The coins weigh 845g (30oz) and would have been worth a huge sum when they were buried – enough to buy a luxurious home in the region where they were found.
The Directors say “The person who buried this treasure 1,100 years ago must have expected to retrieve it, and even secured the vessel with a nail so that it would not move,”.
The youth who discovered the hoard said: “It was amazing. I dug in the ground and when I excavated the soil, saw what looked like very thin leaves. When I looked again I saw these were gold coins.”
➢ A restaurant in Chicago called PB&J . . . which stands for Pizza, Beer, and Jukebox . . . decided to live up to its name by adding a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to the menu. And it’s the most expensive one in the world……….. It’ll cost you $350.
So what makes it cost that much? The bread has edible gold baked in . . . it uses an expensive all-natural peanut butter . . . honey imported from New Zealand . . . and a redcurrant jam from France that’s, quote, “hand-seeded using goose quills.”
The restaurant also sells a regular PB&J made on Wonder Bread with regular peanut butter and grape jelly for $5.
➢ The “Friends” reunion won’t go ahead without a live studio audience. All six cast members are set to take part in the one-off special for HBO Max, and now co-creator Marta Kauffman says: ”We all want it to happen. We just have to wait until it is safe. This is a show that is not scripted, but this is the way the show works – we are going to need a live audience. Even if we socially distance that live audience…We can not do it without them.” She says now, they are “just waiting” for the right time.
➢ The first live-action “Magic School Bus” feature film is on its way with Elizabeth Banks set to star as the quirky and adventurous science teacher, ‘Ms. Valerie Frizzle’. The film adaptation is based on the popular Scholastic children’s book series of the same name and follows eccentric Ms. Frizzle and her class on their field trips in a magical yellow school bus. This marks the first big-screen adaptation in the franchise’s 26-year history. No release date yet.

GOOD NEWS
A Cleveland couple went through with their wedding and did a small backyard ceremony last week. But they had to cancel the reception, so they donated all the food to a women and children’s shelter. They even helped serve it while they were still in their gown and tuxedo.
There’s a 10-year-old artist in the U.K. named Daisy Watt who’s so good, her paintings sell for thousands of dollars. And she donates ALL of it to charity. Five Surprising Facts About Spam Calls
- Spam calls aren’t getting worse. A new study out of North Carolina State University found that the number of robocalls we get are basically the same from month to month. Even though it FEELS like the problem is getting worse.
- Answering spam calls or talking with telemarketers won’t make you get more of them. The authors of the study found that answering robocalls or talking with telemarketers doesn’t have an effect on the number of calls you receive.
- The majority of robocalls don’t contain a recorded message. About 62% of the unsolicited calls in the study included no audio at all.
- Some people get so many unsolicited calls it makes their phone unusable. The researchers found that there have been instances of people receiving hundreds of back-to-back calls, which can make their phone unusable for multiple DAYS.
They say it happens when a spam caller uses a fake phone number, and that phone number actually belongs to someone. Then the robocaller makes thousands of calls using that number, and tons of people see it on their missed call list and call it back.
- It might be impacting the pandemic. The researchers say that healthcare workers and contact tracers have been calling from phone numbers people don’t recognize. And since we’re all wary about answering unknown calls these days, it’s made it more difficult for healthcare workers to do their job.

HAVING PLANTS CAN HELP WITH STRESS LEVELS
Go ahead and buy an indoor plant—it could help you feel less stressed.
Licensed mental health counselor Jesse Radloff says, “Researcher has been done examining the effect on people while being in an indoor environment with or without plants. Not only did the people in the rooms with plants self-report feeling less stressed and happier, their cortisol (a stress hormone) was also lower than those in non-plant rooms.”
She adds that there’s a type of mental health therapy called horticultural therapy which “among other activities, involves caring for an indoor plant to improve mood, motivation, stress levels, and feelings of self efficacy.”
Another expert says if you’re new to indoor gardening you should consider starting out with an easy plant, such as a snake plant, pothos, philodendron, or dracaena.

Giolito struck out 13 batters, and fell short of a perfect game only with a fourth-inning walk. Normally, the home-field fans in Chicago would have been wildly cheering, but instead Giolito’s no-hitter came before empty stands and was celebrated only by his teammates.
- The thing about wearing masks and social distancing in a pandemic is that it’s POINTLESS if you’re going to break quarantine so you can party like it’s 2019.
The British tabloids say JUSTIN BIEBER and his wife HAILEY ignored COVID-19 warnings, and threw a late-night house party with a ton of guests including Kendall and Kylie Jenner. It was a birthday party for singer Justine Skye.
In addition to being risky, the party would be in violation of an L.A. County ban on gatherings with people from different households.
- 44 years ago, a guy in Minnesota named Bob Sportal boughta used 1957 Chevy pickup from a guy for $75. Now it’s all beat up and rusted out, but it still runs. And his wife has been begging him to get rid of it. So he finally did last month. He sold it to the previous owner’s grandson, and charged him the same price he paid for it, just $75.
- Here’s Jim Gaffigan on being in charge of the TV remote . . . because he’s the man.
LIVE (REVENUE) STREAMING:
Musicians are now able to charge fans for access to virtual concerts and livestreams on Facebook, thanks to a new paid online events function. The new system went live last week in 20 countries, including the US, UK, Australia and Canada. It allows not just musicians, who have suffered financially from not being able to perform live during the pandemic, but businesses, creators, educators and media publishers to charge entry to their virtual events. Facebook says the company will not be taking a cut of revenue from paid online access events for “at least the next year”, to support small businesses and creators.
JOSH TURNER RELEASES ALBUM OF COUNTRY CLASSICS

FRIDAY. He pays tribute to several country music icons with the 12-song project, including Randy Travis, John Anderson, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Vern Gosdin.

We had kind of kicked the idea around the label liked it. The first song that came to mind when we started talking about this record was ‘I Can Tell By The Way You Dance’ – the old Vern Gosdin song, and this new version, of mine, I feel like it could be a hit today, just really kind of modernized it.”]
Josh is joined on Country State of Mind by special guests Randy Travis, Chris Janson, John Anderson, Kris Kristofferson, Runaway June and Maddie & Tae.
Jay DeMarcus Thinks Every Married Couple Should Have a Marriage Coach
The first season of “DeMarcus Family Rules” is on Netflix. It’s JAY DEMARCUS, his wife ALLISON, their nine-year-old daughter Madeline, eight-year-old son Dylan . . . plus tons of friends and family constantly interrupting them.
Although they love having a house full of people, the lack of privacy has put a strain on their marriage. Especially for Jay who’s always complaining that he doesn’t get enough alone time with Allison.
So, they got a marriage coach, and he thinks you should get one too. Quote, “I suggest everyone that’s married go to a marriage coach because it will bring things to the surface that you don’t even realize are there.
“It will also keep you very aware of how you’re communicating with your partner. Once you’re married and settle into life together and have a couple of kids, it’s very easy to lose one another in the chaos of all that.
“The great thing is to have somebody there reminding you to stay connected to the person that you’re a life partner with. That’s what’s been very beneficial for us.” (The show was recorded last fall before COVID-19.)
