On Today’s Show
August 31, 2020 9:35 am➢ CHADWICK BOSEMAN, died of complications from colon cancer on Friday. He was only 43. He was diagnosed four years ago, but never revealed it publicly. That means that he was fighting cancer while filming “Black Panther” and the last two “Avengers” movies.
Denzel Washington is among the Hollywood stars paying tribute to “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman. In 2018, Boseman revealed that Washington had helped pay for students, including himself, to study acting in England as part of the British American Drama Academy’s Midsummer in Oxford program.
➢ Sankavi Rathan an 11-year-old girl from Mississauga set a Guinness record by solving 30 Rubik’s Cubes while hula-hooping. Here are a few moments from her record-setting day. (The previous record was 25.)
➢ The man called the world’s oldest hockey player has died. 99-year-old Mark Sertich of Duluth, Minnesota had laced up his skates as recently as last month, when his morning hockey league was allowed to return to action following the lockdown. Guinness World Records listed the WWII vet as the oldest ice hockey player when he broke his own record in 2017 by playing at an international old-timers’ tournament in Santa Rosa, California at 96 years and 2 days old. And when his team offered him a lifetime achievement certificate with free ice-time for his 80th birthday, they didn’t expect that they’d be covering his expenses for two more decades.
➢ This three-year-old would likely be considered a hero to some. Harry Keogh, who is from Dublin, Ireland, took his dad’s phone and managed to order about 36-dollars-worth of McDonald’s French fries. His parents believed he was only watching YouTube videos on the phone, and his mom was shocked when a delivery driver showed up with nine orders of the fries. When his parents asked why he had ordered so many fries, he told them he was feeling a bit hungry.
➢ Three more stars are making their way to the dance floor on “Dancing With the Stars”. Jesse Metcalfe (“Desperate Housewives”), Anne Heche (“Another World”) and ex-NFL player Vernon Davis will join the ABC series for Season 29. They join former “Bachelorette” Kaitlyn Bristowe and Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean in the cast. Carole Baskin, of “Tiger King” fame is also reportedly being considered to appear, an idea that has already gotten fans of the Netflix series talking.

FREE AFTER 37 YEARS
A Florida man who spent the last 37 years in prison on a rape and murder charge was released last Thursday, hours after officials revealed new DNA evidence that proved his innocence.
Robert DuBoise walked out of the jail with his mother and sister.
The 56-year-old was serving a life sentence, having been convicted in 1983 for murder. His conviction centred on one piece of evidence: an alleged bite mark on the victim’s face. A jailhouse informant’s testimony also helped convict him.
Experts proved the mark wasn’t from a bite, and the jailhouse informant was not credible.
Dubose said he will have to learn many modern things, such as how to use a computer and how to shop at big box stores. He say that he isn’t angry at those involved in his long incarceration.
“If you keep hatred and bitterness in your heart, you don’t have room for anything else,” he said. “I’m just very grateful.” The case has since been reopened and authorities already have a suspect.

Here’s a quick rundown of this week in science . . .
- Africa was declared polio-freethis week. There hasn’t been a case of wild polio there since 2016. (A handful of people a year still get it when the live virus in the vaccine mutates, but it’s rare. Overall, the vaccine has saved millions of lives.)
- A study found birds sing better later in the day. When they sing in the morning, they’re really just warming up. And a separate study found that went birds are given opiates, their songs get more creative like jazz.
- In other bird news, painting the blades on wind turbinesmight stop birds from crashing into them. Researches painted one blade on a turbine black, and 70% fewer birds died.
- What if booze GAVE you energy? A study in Japan found a type of mutant yeast in sake that reduces fatigue. And it could easily be used to make beer and wine too.

‘EARLY BIRDS’ MORE ACTIVE THAN ‘NIGHT OWLS’
People who prefer to get an early start tend to be more active than those who are ‘night owls.’
Finnish researchers found that for ‘early bird’ men, the extra activity in a day equates to a light walk lasting over a half hour, while for women, rising early equates to about 20 minutes of extra daily activity.
The scientists say that for now, it’s not clear what causes early risers to be more active than those who prefer to stay up late.
