On Today’s Show
September 2, 2020 9:35 am➢ On Sunday night, two pilots who were flying into Los Angeles International Airport reported seeing a man in a JETPACK flying at 3,000 feet.
One pilot was from American Airlines, and one was from SkyWest . . . so these are legit pilots for big airlines who wouldn’t be trying to pull a hoax.
The FAA and FBI are both investigating.
Besides the potential legal issues of flying a jetpack at that altitude and in a restricted airspace, an aviation expert says the guy was taking a huge risk.
Quote, “The risk is obviously having a collision with an airplane . . . or the person getting ingested into an engine.”
➢ It’s been eight years since David Blaine performed one of his famous outdoor stunts today he plans to float 18,000 feet, or nearly 3½ miles, into the sky over Arizona carried by 52 helium-filled weather balloons, before releasing the balloons and parachuting back to earth. It’s a stunt that has been a decade in the making and required Blaine to complete 500 airplane jumps, become licensed for hot-air balloon piloting and learn to read wind patterns. The event will stream TODAY starting at 5:55am pacific time on Blaine’s YouTube channel.
➢ This has to be a welcome mix-up. Police in Cologne, Germany, said they received several reports early Wednesday morning (August 26th) from Cologne residents who reported sounds of gunfire nearby. Police identified the source of the sounds, and brought in a locksmith to open the door to the suspected apartment. Luckily, when officers entered they just found the sleeping 34-year-old resident sleeping in front of the TV which had an action movie playing on it at a high volume. Police said the man was taken to the police station, but was released once officers verified his identity.
➢ A singer named Tim Storms holds the Guinness record for hitting the lowest note. It’s the musical note G-7, and it registered at 0.189 Hertz. He also holds the record for the widest vocal range, of 10 octaves. And when you hear him sing the song “Lonesome Road”, you’ll understand. (Search for “Alpha Stream – Tim Storms – Lonesome Road.” Check out how low he goes at the 1:59 mark, and again starting at 3:08.)
➢ Netflix has hit the pause button on a virtual event previewing Chadwick Boseman’s movie “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in light of his death. The event was set for this morning and was to include first-seen clips from the film, as well as a conversation with director George C. Wolfe and Boseman’s co-star, Viola Davis. The film is set in 1920’s Chicago and deals with issues of race, art, religion and the exploitation of black recording artists by white producers.
TODAY IS……………….
- “Coconut Day”, you can’t make a piña colada or a decent Thai curry without it, its water makes a great recovery drink, and its fibrous husk, when burned, repels mosquitos. One of nature’s most versatile products, the coconut plant (and its various parts) can be used for food and drink, cosmetic preparations, and decorating.

COVID UPDATE:
➢ It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic is stressful for everyone. And while experts aren’t sure how it will affect people long-term, some say they’ve seen patients who have experienced what they are calling “shock hair loss”. While it isn’t a new condition, the phenomenon appears 3-4 months after a “stressor” such as anxiety, depression or financial stress, and can result in the shedding of up to 50% of your hair. The good news? Shock hair loss isn’t forever. It takes about six months for the hair to grow back.
➢ In the privacy of a bathroom, social distancing isn’t usually a concern. Despite that, a new study finds public restrooms can expose you to viruses like COVID-19 with every single flush. Researchers in China say public toilets, and especially men’s urinals, can spray you with virus-covered particles in a matter of seconds. Their study found that every flush is potentially exposing people to both feces and urine-based virus droplets. This is particularly dangerous amid the coronavirus pandemic, which typically spreads through fluid droplets.
FOUR RANDOM FACTS
- The reason there are usually mirrors next to elevators is to keep people distracted while they wait.
- “Friends”went through three other titles first: “Insomnia Cafe” . . . “Six of One” . . . and “Friends Like Us”.
- A guy named Philip Noel-Bakerfrom England is the only person who’s ever won an Olympic medal and received a Nobel Prize. He won a silver as a runner in the 1500 meters at the 1920 Olympics, then went into politics and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1959.
- Wonder why Owen Wilsonis in basically every Wes Anderson movie? They were roommates at the University of Texas in the early ’90s.
GOOD NEWS
A woman in Texas got addicted to baking bread during the lockdown, and she hasn’t stopped.
She looks for people on Facebook who’ve been having a bad day, and gives them some.
She’s now given away over 100 loaves since the pandemic started. (Her philosophy is, “Life is short. Consume the carbs.”)

‘POOP-SOAKED’ PHONE RESCUED FROM NATIONAL FOREST TOILET
Would you even want your phone back if this happened to it?
Sanitation workers cleaning out a vault toilet in the Flathead National Forest in Montana say they found a “poop-soaked phone” at the bottom of the toilet tank and were shocked to find it still works.
The men spotted the iPhone 11 Pro while cleaning a toilet near Holland Lake. They say they sanitized it, plugged it in, and then couldn’t believe it worked.
They also said they weren’t able to get any information from the phone until they popped out the SIM card and then put it into another phone. They left a voicemail for the phone’s owner, who they say was also shocked the phone still worked well enough to get her information off of it.
The sanitation workers noted in a Facebook post that the “poop-soaked phone is on its way home.”

DRINKING JUST ONE BEER CAN MAKE YOU MORE ATTRACTIVE TO MOSQUITOES
Summer is beginning to wind down, but it’s not like the mosquitoes are taking it easy. A study published by the Journal of American Mosquito Control Association finds that people who drink beer are actually more attractive to mosquitoes compared to those who do not drink beer.
The scientists say the chemical compound ethanol is a favorite of mosquitoes, and when you consume beer, the percentage of ethanol in your sweat significantly increases.
In addition, drinking alcohol makes your body temperature go up, which is also something mosquitoes love. The study found that even just drinking one 12-ounce bottle of beer was enough to put a person at immediately higher risk of bug bites.
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 2ND
- NHL PLAYOFFS:
Vancouver Canucks 2, Vegas Golden Knights 1 — Vegas leads 3 games to 2
Philadelphia Flyers 4, New York Islanders 3 (OT) — New York leads 3 games to 2
The Denver Nuggets beat the Utah Jazz 80-78 last night (September 1st) to complete their comeback from being down 3 games to 1 and win their first round playoffs series. The Nuggets became just the 12th team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 deficit to win a series. They’ll now face the Los Angeles Clippers in the Western Conference semifinals.
The Nuggets made a bad decision to shoot the ball in one of the final plays of the Jazz – Nuggets game. That gave Utah the rebound, and a chance to win. When Scott Van Pelt interviewed Nuggets’ point guard Jamal Murray after the game, he had a funny reaction. Plus, while still sweating from last night’s game, he was shocked to find out how quickly the next series starts.
NBA PLAYOFFS:
First Round:
Denver Nuggets 80, Utah Jazz 78 — Denver wins series 4 games to 3
Conference Semifinals:

DID YOU KNOW?
Research from Harvard study shows that people who regularly volunteer enjoy longer, happier, healthier lives. The study of 13,000 people over 50 years old showed that those who volunteer for about two hours weekly have a considerably lower risk of death. They’re also less likely to develop physical impairments and tend to exercise more frequently.
Miranda Lambert Got Seven CMA Nominations, and Is Now the Most Nominated Female Ever
The CMA nominations came out yesterday and MIRANDA LAMBERT leads the pack with SEVEN. She now has a total of 55 CMA nominations in her career . . . and that’s a record for a female. Reba McEntire has 51.
Miranda is up for Entertainer of the Year, and that’s big news too, because so is CARRIE UNDERWOOD. It’s been 41 years since two SOLO female acts were up for that award. Crystal Gayle and Barbara Mandrell were both nominated in 1979.
ERIC CHURCH, LUKE COMBS, and KEITH URBAN are also up for Entertainer of the Year. Keith is the only one of the five nominees to win it. He’s done it twice. (Last year’s winner Garth Brooks permanently removed himself from consideration.)
Following Miranda’s lead is Luke Combs who has six nominations. MAREN MORRIS has five . . . and CARLY PEARCE and DAN + SHAY have four each.
Who got snubbed? Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Dustin Lynch,
Justin Moore, Kane Brown . . . and Kelsea Ballerini who’s looking on the bright side. Here’s what she said on Twitter:
Quote, “Last time this happened, I wrote ‘Homecoming Queen’ the next day about the feeling. Something beautiful will come from [this] disappointment. Congratulations to my friends and peers that got nominations. Proud to be a part of the country family.”
Fans and artists alike responded to her tweet, with Old Dominion writing, “We see you,” and Kane Brown adding, “Hold your head up.” Kelsea is, however, nominated for Female Artist of the Year at the ACM Awards on Sept. 16th in Nashville.
“The 54th Annual CMA Awards” will air November 11th on ABC. No word yet where it will be held . . . or who will host . . . or if it’s going to have a live audience.
JASON ALDEAN’S LATEST HIT GOT HIS WIFE’S STAMP OF APPROVAL
Jason Aldean listens to his wife Brittany‘s input when it comes to the music he records because she tends to pick the winners. He tells us his latest hit, “Got What I Got,” was the song on his current album, 9, that really got Brittany’s attention. [“That’s her favorite song on the album so that’s always a thing. It’s like if . . . Like on the last album there was ‘You Make It Easy.’ That was the one she flipped out about and obviously that was a good call so whenever she goes, ‘All the girls are gonna love that song,’ I’m like, ‘Alright, that’s why I cut it but I’m glad that it’s making the connection here.'”]
‘FARM AID’ EVENT THIS MONTH
Farm Aid’s 35th anniversary concert Farm Aid 2020 will take place on September 26th as a virtual at-home festival. Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Dave Matthews, and John Mellencamp will once again headline the three-hour event, which starts at 8 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on AXS TV and streamed via YouTube. Proceeds will benefit U.S. family farmers with $60 million raised since its inception in 1985.
Other artists set to perform on September 26th at Farm Aid 2020 are: Bonnie Raitt & Boz Scaggs, Brandi Carlile, Edie Brickell & Charlie Sexton, Chris Stapleton, Jamey Johnson, and others.
Farm Aid began in 1985 with the aim of providing assistance to poor and needy families in rural farming communities. John Mellencamp told us the success of the concert festival could be found in the fact that show is ever evolving: [“It is a continuous effort. I think that Willie has shown, and the organization has shown is that they’re here for the long haul, and it’s just not a media stunt of any kind, or a thing for a corporation to flex their muscles for a day.”]
