On Today’s Show

➢ A dog in Ireland has given birth to one of the largest-ever litters – after an appointment to have her spayed was cancelled because of Covid-19. Bella, a Labrador and Collie cross, and Irish setter-English spaniel Archie should both have been “fixed” but weren’t able to due to the lockdown. Despite the best efforts of their owner to keep the pair apart, Bella gave birth to 16 pups. Sadly, one died, but it is still one of the largest single deliveries ever.

➢ A pair of centenarians in Ecuador have been crowned the world’s oldest married couple by Guinness World Records. 104-year-old Waldramina Quinteros, and her 110-year-old husband Julio Mora have been married for 79 years. They wed in secret in 1941 because “both families disapproved” at the time, but they say they knew it was “meant to be”. While there are longer marriages, Quinteros and Mora hold the title as the eldest – just shy of a combined 215 years.

➢ A second grader humiliate her Mother by bringing a bottle of Malibu rum to show and tell. Meghan Maza Oeser from Mokena, Illinois looked in on her daughter Penny while she attended her first day of virtual classes last week.  According to Meghan’s Facebook post, the assignment was to show the class “something that smells good.” The post, along with a photo of Penny and her booze, was liked more than 90,000 times.

➢ If you’re craving travelling, someone started a group called “Sounds of the Forest” where people upload nature sounds to Soundcloud from all over the world.  And there’s a map with all of the sounds from various countries.  (Here’s 10 seconds from Taman Negara National Park in Malaysia)

➢ Carole Baskin might seem like an unlikely member of the “Dancing With the Stars” cast, but she is working hard to change that view. When she agreed to star on the series, she began prepping at home by going to YouTube to learn some basic steps. Salsa, cha-cha and the Venezuelan waltz were among the dance styles she brushed up on. One of her team members at Big Cat Rescue is a dance teacher who also helped her learn a thing or two. Dancing With the Stars premieres on Monday, Sept. 14.

B.C. RAIN

The British Columbia coast is no stranger to showers and frequent bouts of heavy rain in the fall and winter, but calling this summer a washout might even be a bit an understatement for Prince Rupert.

The jet stream didn’t behave accordingly or weaken enough to give those along the North Coast a bit of a break from the rain.

Prince Rupert attempted to close in on one metre of rainfall this meteorological summer, clocking nearly 800 mm of rain in June, July and August. That makes the summer precipitation over 200% of normal. In other words, the wettest summer on record. August was particularly anomalous with 419 mm – a staggering 250% of normal. In fact, it appears to be the third rainiest month over the past 10+ years!

On top of it all, it was the persistence of the rainfall that stands out. It rained every single day in August, a feat that is extremely unlikely to have happened before.

Other locations in southern B.C. generally tipped a little on the wet side this summer, with Cranbrook recording the 10th driest summer on record with just 57 mm of precipitation.

CARRIE UNDERWOOD RECALLS HER EARLY DAYS OF EMPLOYMENT

Most entertainers have endured countless unpleasant jobs along the way to realizing their dream in the spotlight, however Carrie Underwood was not one of those.

[“My first job was at a gas station, and that was a lot of fun actually. While I was working at the gas station, I took another job at a hotel down the street. There was nobody else working there. I had one day of training and then the next day I came in, and the lady that had worked there the longest and was training me just didn’t show. So, the second day at work I was now in charge ‘cause I was now the senior member that was working at the hotel. So, I feel like that one was really challenging to figure my way through it, but I did.”]

Carrie was nominated for Entertainer and Female Vocalist of the Year at this year’s CMA Awards in Nashville on Nov. 11th.

She is also up for Entertainer and Female Artist of the Year at the ACM Awards, which will air live from Nashville for the first time ever on Sept. 16th on CBS.

20,000 JEANS UNDER THE SEA:
You’ve probably heard how microfibers from your synthetic clothes, like yoga pants and stretchy socks slough off when you do laundry and wind up in the environment. The tiny plastic fibers (5mm long) have even been found in the deep sea.

Now, University of Toronto researchers say your blue jeans are doing the same thing. Environmentalists had hoped that organic fibers might not be as persistent as plastic ones, but tiny pieces of jeans and other cotton clothing have been found in the Arctic Ocean in Canada’s north, far from human activity.

How? Our wastewater treatment plants don’t filter all the microfibers out, and from there, they are deposited into bodies of water, with deep-sea currents eventually transporting them almost anywhere. What’s the risk? Fish and other sea creatures consume them, thereby allowing them to enter the food chain.

What can you do about it? There are special filters which can be attached to washing machines to filter the microfilters from flowing to wastewater treatment plants. Those should become standard on all washing machines. Oh, and don’t wash your blue jeans so often.

A RECORD NUMBER OF ADULTS ARE LIVING WITH THEIR PARENTS

A record number of young adults in the U.S. are living with their parents because of the coronavirus pandemic. According to Pew Research, 52% of 18-to-29-year-olds are living with one or both parents. It is the fist time on record that more than half of that age group has lived with their parents. Pew noted that the share of younger adults living at hoe could have been higher during the Great Depression but figures don’t exist for that time period.

MAREN MORRIS AND HUSBAND FEEL LIKE OFFICIAL PARENTS

Maren Morris and her husband, fellow artist Ryan Hurd, welcomed son Hayes at the start of the pandemic shutdown and have spent the last several months getting re-adjusted to being around one another everyday as well as getting to know their infant son and fully embrace the roles of parenting.

[“This is the most that my husband and I have ever seen each other cause we’re always touring, so we’ve really learned to enjoy each other without having to miss each other, if that makes sense. So that’s been nice, and then, yeah, learning how to be a parent, feeling like some days you suck at it and then other days you’re crushing it. I think the day Hayes started sleeping through the night was when we were like, “We did it, we made it this far, we’ve kept him alive, he can sleep through the night, feel like we’re parents now.”]

Maren is climbing the charts with her latest single, “To Hell & Back.”

She recently performed her chart-topping hit “The Bones” on CBS’ Late Late Show With James Corden.

FGL’S TYLER HUBBARD RECALLS JOB HE WAS HAPPY TO LEAVE BEHIND

With Labor Day approaching this weekend, Florida Georgia Line‘s Tyler Hubbard can recall one job he had that he was grateful to put behind him. He was a student attending Belmont University in Nashville at the time.[“I polished silverware at Maggiano’s for like seven months probably, in hopes to just be a server there.  And I love Maggiano’s and it was definitely an experience that I’ll never forget, but I am definitely thankful for everything I learned there, and polishin’ silverware and talking about learning patience and all that, but definitely something I’m grateful to have moved on from.”]

Of course, Belmont is where Tyler met Brian Kelley, and they formed Florida Georgia Line.

FGL are celebrating their 17th Number One hit song this week with “I Love My Country.” It’s included on the duo’s 6 Pack EP, which they released this summer.
