On Today’s Show

➢ A bizarre birthday present ended up being a great investment for one English family.  Matthew Robson was born in 1992, and over the course of his life, his father Pete has spent about $6,500 on 21 bottles of Macallan single malt.  Each year he received one as a birthday present with strict instructions never to open them.  The entire collection is still intact and valued at more than $50,000.  Matthew is planning to use the money to buy his first house.

➢ An 11-year-old in Indiana named P.J. Brewer-Laye was riding his go-kart last week while his grandmother watched, and she started having a medical issue.  They were a mile-and-a-half from home.  So he rode his go-kart back . . . jumped in her Mercedes . . . got her to a hospital . . . and she’s okay.  She says he’s had practice driving his go-kart, and he’s moved cars around in the driveway before.  But she was still shocked by his driving skills.

➢ A Texas homeowner got a huge surprise when he discovered a hidden pool in his backyard.  John Reynolds bought a run-down house in Texas , once owned by a hoarder, for under $20,000.  His plan was to clear it out, fix it up, and sell it for a profit.  However, a few months after he purchased the house, heavy rainfall exposed an in-ground pool hidden underneath the overgrown garden.  Reynolds spent about $10,000 fixing it up and loves the house so much, he kept it for himself.

➢ Earlier this week one of the founders of Jelly Belly announced he’s holding a Willy Wonka-style contest where people can find golden tickets to try to win one of his candy factories.

Well . . . Jelly Belly just put out an IMPORTANT message.  While David Klein FOUNDED their company, he sold his stake 40 years ago and owns a different candy company, called Spectrum Confections. So if you win this contest, you won’t be taking over Jelly Belly’s empire . . . you’ll get one of Klein’s factories, most likely in Florida.

➢ When Kevin Hart was younger, he went to a basketball camp and ended up roommates with Kobe Bryant.  He talked about it last night on “The Tonight Show.”  (From “The Tonight Show” on Wednesday, September 9, 2020)

TODAY IS……………….

  • “9/11 Remembrance Day”, 19 years ago at 8:46 am EDT, terrorists began the attack on NYC’s World Trade Center using hijacked airliners. The Pentagon in Arlington VA was subsequently targeted, and an attempt by passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93 to retake control of their hijacked plane caused it to crash in a Pennsylvania field, killing all 64 people on board.

  • “Emergency Number Day”, saluting the direct-dial 9-1-1 emergency system. (In the UK it’s 9-9-9; in Australia 0-0-0, in New Zealand 1-1-1, in much of Europe 1-1-2)

GOOD NEWS

Maxine and Jake Young of Berks County, Pennsylvania have one son, and they’d had quite a bit of difficulty getting pregnant, so they tried IVF.

They wanted more kids, so they’d also been looking to adopt . . . and in December, they took in FOUR foster siblings as part of an emergency adoption placement.  So their family went from three people to seven, just like that.

And then . . . a few weeks later, Maxine found out she was pregnant.  She didn’t even think that was possible.  And she wasn’t just pregnant with another kid . . . she was pregnant with QUADRUPLETS.

She gave birth to the quadruplets last month, and they’re still in the neonatal intensive care unit at the hospital.  But they’re all doing well and should be able to come home soon.

And that’s how their family went from three to ELEVEN in less than a year.

GET CRACKING:
“Breakfast for dinner” is sometimes considered a treat.

It’s also sometimes a “meal of last resort” for busy parents who are dealing with either a shortage of time or a shortage of groceries.

But now, a doctor is saying that it’s a concept we should all be considering…for better sleep! Dr. Uma Naidoo MD, who refers to herself as a “nutritional psychiatrist” and has written the book “The is Your Brain on Food”, doesn’t suggest firing up the griddle for pancakes or smashing avocado on toast, she suggests having an omelet at night. Why?

Because she says eggs are naturally chock-full of melatonin, a hormone produced naturally by the body that’s essential for sleep.

And according to research, the hormone can help you fall asleep faster and longer, and it might even enhance REM sleep. Eggs also contain L-ornithine, an amino acid that has been shown to help improve sleep quality.

And here’s why you should eat those eggs in the form of an omelet: Veggies like asparagus and broccoli are also rich in melatonin.

The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs beat the Houston Texans 34-20 last night (September 10th) in the NFL’s season-opening game. The two teams played in Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium before a socially-distanced crowd of about 17,000 people.

Shortly before kickoff, the two teams lined up together at midfield and linked arms as social justice messages, including “End Racism,” were shown on the scoreboard. A moment of silence for the fight for equality was then held, during which some boos could be heard from the crowd.

DID YOU KNOW?
A survey has found households are tossing out an average of 13.5% more food than they were before the pandemic. That adds up to 2.3 kilograms (5-plus pounds) per week. The study of 8,272 Canadians by research firm Caddle determined that at current rates, food waste will result in an annual cost of around $2,000 per household. Prior to the pandemic, the dollar amount of wasted food was estimated to be $1,766. And before the pandemic, around 40% of every dollar spent on food in Canada went toward dining out, but that fell below 10% when COVID-19 hit.

KEITH URBAN ON NAVIGATING LIFE WITH FAMILY

Keith Urban, his wife, Nicole Kidman, and their two daughters are all in their native Australia these days due to Nicole’s work schedule. Despite the pandemic that continues globally, Keith tells us EXCLUSIVELY that they are carrying on as best they can under the circumstances, and he largely credits Nicole for balancing everything. [“She’s just such a great wife and mother to our girls so she really keeps us all moving forward and making it all work even when we have to shoot in different locations. You know, we came down to Australia because this is where Nic is shooting her film and the kids are doing schooling as best they can right now, and I’ll be getting on a plane to head back to Nashville very soon to host the ACMs so we just sort of figure it out as we go.”]

The ACM Awards will be held in Nashville for the very first time on Sept. 16th. It will air from three different legendary Music City venues — the Grand Ole Opry House, the Ryman Auditorium and the Bluebird Cafe — on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

In addition to hosting the ACM Awards, Keith is nominated for Male Artist of the Year and will perform during the broadcast.

REBA McENTIRE RE-RELEASES ‘RUMOR HAS IT’ TODAY

Reba McEntire re-releases her iconic triple-platinum album Rumor Has It today (Friday, Sept. 11th) in honor of the record’s 30th Anniversary. The anniversary edition vinyl includes a bonus track, a live acoustic version of “Fancy” recorded at The Ryman, while the CD and digital versions feature that bonus track as well as a new dance remix of “Fancy.”

There was a lot was going on in Reba’s life both personally and professionally at the time she recorded Rumor Has Is. She was pregnant with her son, Shelby, and on bedrest for over two months just prior to his birth. At the same time, Reba tells us she was prepping for a tour and sifting through songs to record for this new project.[“While I was on bedrest I was listening for songs. They’d bring me a huge box of cassette tapes. I had to stay on my left side all the time and I had my boom box and I would listen to songs all day long. So, I had Shelby, and then we went right into recording with Tony Brown. A lot of stuff happened, but a lot of great things happened out of that. Number one, Shelby is 30 years old; ‘Fancy’ is my biggest song of my career; four great singles off this album, so I’m really thrilled that we’re getting to re-release it.”]

BRAD PAISLEY – NEW VERSION OF “ALCOHOL”

Here’s another great song parody that BRAD PAISLEY did while filling in for Jimmy Kimmel the other night.  It’s an updated version of Alcohol that fits the madness we’ve been dealing with during COVID-19.
