On Today’s Show

➢A 16-year-old kid with autism named Aiden Hall had a rough back-to-school experience this month in Arkansas.  But it turned out great.  He’s a big Superman fan, and got bullied for showing up to school wearing a big red cape.  But then a bunch of kids on the football team heard about it.  And they all wore capes to school, just to support him

➢ You’ve got to appreciate this level of commitment to a bit.  A guy biked from Poo Poo Point in Washington state to Pee Pee Creek in Ohio over the course of 36 days to raise money for charity.  (Here he is at the end of the ride laughing at the “Pee Pee Creek” sign.)

➢2020 has claimed the life of one of Facebook’s most popular social games. Farmville will shut down on December 31st, 2020. Farmville is a Flash game, and with Facebook removing support for Flash games at the end of the year, it will no longer be able to maintain its virtual farms. Kotaku reports that In-app purchases will be available until November 17th

➢ A bank manager in Little Rock, AR discovered a huge 9.07-carat diamond at a state park in southwestern Arkansas. At first, the thought it was a piece of glass, but turns out it was the second-largest diamond in the 48-year history of Crater of Diamonds State Park. The park is known for its diamonds, though; 245 have been registered at just that park alone.

➢After years away from Hollywood, RICK MORANIS finally returned in a Mint Mobile commercial with RYAN REYNOLDS.  And this is what he gets for stepping back into the spotlight:

At about 7:30 on Thursday morning, Rick was walking down the sidewalk in New York City, when some guy randomly SUCKER-PUNCHED him.  Rick went down hard, and the guy just walked away.

The attack was caught by a surveillance camera, and the cops have a pretty clear picture of the guy and they’re offering a $2,500 reward for information that leads to his arrest.

Rick was treated at a local hospital, but he’s back home.  So Rick is doing okay, but Ryan Reynolds isn’t.  He Tweeted, quote, “Should have known not to subject Rick to the year 2020. Glad to hear he’s okay.”

TODAY IS……………….

GOOD NEWS

A 75-year-old guy in England with no family recently lost his wife.  And he was so lonely in lockdown, he put a sign on his window just looking for someone to talk to.

Tony Williams received so many emails they crashed his inbox.

People from Canada, the U.S. Holland, Australia, Egypt, India, and Japan have been in touch inviting him on road trips or for an afternoon drinking gin and tonics.

Others have offered him lunches, phone calls, and for their kids to adopt him as a grandfather.

He said, “The love and compassion people have shown has actually brought tears to my eyes. People have sent me the most delightful emails. “I got an email from a local teacher asking if children in her class could write me letters. I got in touch with her straight away and said it would be delightful. I would love that.

He said he was left without anyone to speak to after his wife Jo, 75, passed away in May, just nine days after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. They were unable to have children and without any family nearby, Tony advertised in his local newspaper looking for a friend to chat to, but didn’t get any replies.

So then he had business cards made to hand out when he went to the supermarket or out for a walk. He handed out dozens without receiving a call back, so he decided to put a poster up in his window and that’s when it took off on social media.

He is enjoying chatting on the phone to strangers—now friends—from around the world, and plans to meet up with his new pals once Covid restrictions allow.

LAST WEEK IN SCIENCE

  1. In “Jurassic Park”, they pulled all their dino DNA from mosquitos frozen in amber.  But stuff like that wasn’t actually possible in real life . . . until now.  Researchers in Europe recently managed to pull DNA from insects that had been frozen in resin for six years.  They’ll start trying it with older samples next.

  1. A study in the “Journal of Applied Physiology” found tattoos can damage sweat glands, and make it harder for your body to cool itself down.

  1. Deepfake videosare scary, because we won’t be able to tell what’s real or fake pretty soon.  But researchers in New York might have a fix.  They say it’s possible to identify deepfake videos by looking for a HEARTBEAT.  As blood circulates in your face, it causes subtle changes we can’t see with the naked eye.  But special software can pick it up, and tell you if a video shows a real person talking or not.

  1. In space news:  Astronauts on the Space Stationare still trying to pin down the source of a small LEAK they’ve been looking for since last year.  A new study says any future Moon bases would have to be underground, because there’s too much radiation on the surface.  And astronomers may have found several bodies of water buried under the south pole of Mars.

PI IN THE SKY:
A newly discovered planet roughly the size of Earth has one very cool characteristic — it orbits its star every 3.14 Earth days. “The Astronomical Journal” notes the “pi planet” known as K2-315b is relatively close to Earth at 186 light-years away.

MIT researchers Prajwal Niraula says: “The planet moves like clockwork” in its revolutions, which work out to equal the quizzical mathematical constant defined as the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter…which is followed by an infinite number of decimal digits.

Exoplanet K2-315b was discovered in 2017 thanks to NASA’s Kepler telescope, but it wasn’t until this year that its orbit was confirmed via telescopes on Earth, and it was nicknamed the “pi planet”.
