On Today’s Show
October 6, 2020 9:35 am➢Exposure to poisonous mushrooms is on the rise among inexperienced foragers in Ontario as more people take up the activity during COVID-19.
The Ontario Poison Centre says it received 72 calls related to mushroom exposure in September compared to 38 in the same month last year.
The centre says poisonous mushrooms can be easily mistaken for edible ones.
Those with limited foraging experience are urged not to take the risk.
➢ Here’s a “friendly PSA” from a mom whose toddler got on her phone and bought a live turtle through her PayPal account. (It was a Sulcata tortoise. They can live up to 100 years and weigh well over 150 pounds.)
➢ A Florida man, in a road rage incident, pulled out his gun and fired shots through his OWN windshield at another driver. (This begins with the gun shooting, but it doesn’t sound like it does in the movies.)
➢ Dr. Richard B. is the professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic says if you’re going to wear a face covering incorrectly, you might as well not wear one at all. While it’s well established that the main way people are infected with COVID-19 is from inhaling aerosol droplets, Kennedy said there is emerging evidence it’s “a lot easier” for the virus to get a grip on our internal system when it enters through the nasal passage versus the mouth. That’s because the nasal passage tissue is rich in cells that have a certain receptor the virus attaches to. He estimates people are sacrificing about 80% of a mask’s protection by not covering their noses.
➢ Matthew McConaughey and the cast of “Dazed and Confused” will reunite on Sunday for a live script reading of the 1993 film to benefit March for Science’s #VoteForScience campaign in support of Texas voting initiatives. Dazed and Confused was a stoner cult classic about the last day of school at Lee High in Austin, Texas. Joining McConaughey for the livestream will be two dozen original cast members, including Ben Affleck, Parker Posey, Jason London, Joey Lauren Adams and Adam Goldberg. Patton Oswalt will moderate a live Q&A after the reading.

An Etiquette Teacher Fights Off a Mugger Dressed as a Ninja
There’s a 38-year-old woman named Myka Meier in New York City, and she’s a professional etiquette teacher at the Plaza Hotel.
On Monday morning, she was walking with her three-year-old daughter when suddenly, a guy in a full NINJA COSTUME tried to grab her purse.
And Myka wasn’t going to let something so uncouth go down on her watch. So she started FIGHTING the ninja and yelling for help. She fought him off long enough for two construction workers and a doorman to run over to help her.
They held the ninja until the cops came. He turned out to be a 41-year-old guy named Casique Roman of Hackensack, New Jersey . . . and he’s been charged with robbery.

67-Year-Old Took Down an Intruder in Her Senior Complex
You really never, EVER can tell who has the eye of the tiger. Who likes the thrill of the fight. Who can rise up to the challenge of their rivals.
A 59-year-old guy named Donald Prestwood broke into a senior apartment complex in Fontana, California earlier this week. He seemed drunk and said he was looking for his girlfriend. Then he busted into his girlfriend’s 81-year-old mother’s room.
He started ATTACKING her in her wheelchair, and she yelled for help.
And 67-year-old Lorenza Marrujo heard her two floors up. It turns out that Lorenza trained in jujitsu from 1981 to 2007, got a black belt, and calls herself “Lady Ninja.” Oh . . . and she says she used to train to “Eye of the Tiger”.
She ran down to the apartment, saw Donald going after her elderly neighbor . . . and ATTACKED. She bent his fingers back to get him off her friend, then elbowed him in his sternum, and took him down to the ground and held him until the cops got there.
Lorenza is 4-foot-11 and 100 pounds. Donald is 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds. He was arrested for elder abuse.
Lorenza says her only regret is that her jujitsu skills are a little rusty. Quote, “I would have done more damage to him.”

WHY WEIGHT?
You’ve no doubt heard of those weighted blankets that some people are using these days…maybe you even have one. They are said to provide similar benefits to deep pressure therapy, and help those with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and insomnia. But do they really?
A big yes to that, according to a new study. Swedish researchers found that 42% of weighted blanket users see their insomnia go into remission after 4 weeks, and 78% were cured within a year. But how?
The thinking is that the weight in these blankets mimics the sensation of being held and touched. That effect calms the nerves and helps the body to relax, resulting in a better sleep. The study also found that weighted blankets can reduce depression and anxiety, probably for the same reasons.
DORMS RULE:
Would you live in an adult dorm? It could happen. Starcity is a California-based startup that creates high-quality co-living facilities with fully-furnished bedrooms—and, if you’re willing to pay for it, a private bathroom.
Kitchens and other living spaces are shared amongst residents in order to build a sense of community (and save on rent). Members can even share bedrooms if they please, or live alone. Starcity currently offers eight co-living complexes (up to 803 units) in San Francisco and Los Angeles, with two more set to open next year.
Why there? Silicon Valley has the most expensive housing costs in the US. Those who live in their complexes pay a monthly fee that basically covers everything except food and drink, including utilities, streaming services and internet; cleaning, consumables, furnishings and events arranged by Starcity. While costs vary by location, most consider the $1,000-$2,000 monthly fees pretty reasonable.

KOBE’S STUFF
A treasure trove of Kobe Bryant memorabilia found in an abandoned storage locker has been returned to the NBA star’s family.
After an abandoned locker in L.A. was recently auctioned off, it was discovered to contain everything from Kobe Bryant shoes to jerseys and even a mink coat from a photoshoot. In total, there were 35 pairs of shoes, jerseys, Lakers practice gear, a Lakers all-access badge, tax paperwork and more.
The buyer sold the items to “Storage Wars” star Rene Nezhoda for about $13,000, who planned to sell them on the open market, but Kobe’s widow Vanessa felt the items belonged with the Bryant family — so her reps reached in hopes of working out a deal.
Nezhoda says that now, everything has been worked out, with “a number of personal items, worn items, and paperwork sold directly back to the Bryant family”, and some of the items that were NOT worn by Kobe will still be sold for profit.
