On Today’s Show

➢ A dog wandered out onto a frozen lake in England recently, and fell through the ice.  So a random jogger named Darcy Pell jumped in and saved it . . . then continued running.  It turns out he just happens to be an experienced cold-water swimmer.

➢ We saw a product like this for cats a few months ago, but a lot of people said it didn’t work that well.  So hopefully this one’s better . . . A company in South Korea called Petpuls has a new collar that analyzes your dog’s barks and translates them into EMOTIONS. The team behind it spent three years collecting 10,000 samples from 50 different breeds.  And it uses A.I. to evaluate each bark in real time. You pair it with an app on your phone, and they claim it can detect five different emotions:  Happy, relaxed, anxious, angry, or sad.  The app is free, but you need the collar to go with it.  You can buy it at Petpuls.net for $99.  Or $108 for bigger dogs.

➢ Here’s a flight attendant with a warning to NEVER drink coffee or tea made on a plane . . . because the water comes from tanks that are seldom cleaned.  Instead only drink liquids that come in a bottle or can.

➢ A new device aims to inform your boss when you’re unhappy. “Moodbeam” is a Fitbit-style wristband that lets wearers log whether they’re happy or unhappy, as a way of helping employers monitor how staff are coping with working from home. The Moodbeam is linked to a mobile app, and features 2 buttons. Users press the yellow button if they’re happy and the blue button if they’re unhappy. The creators of the device say they came up with it as a simple way for employers to check how their team is doing at a time when you can’t just pop into someone’s office and say “Hello”.

➢ Good news for Muppet enthusiasts – all five seasons of “The Muppet Show” will be available to stream on Disney Plus on Feb. 19. Created by the legendary Jim Henson, the original “Muppet Show” was a variety half-hour featuring ‘Kermit the Frog’ as the showrunner and host. The series originally aired from 1976 to 1981 on CBS. In addition to the show’s first three seasons, seasons 4 and 5 will also be available to stream for the first time.

FALL ASLEEP FASTER WITH THE SIX Ts:
The team at eco-friendly bedding brand “Snug” analyzed decades of research to uncover exactly what we need to do to fall asleep peacefully…
☞ Timing:  Most adults need between 6 and 9 hours of sleep per night.

☞ Temperature:  Your bedroom should be around 17°C (63F). While this may vary a bit from person to person, it’s always harder to fall asleep when you are too hot or cold

☞ Technology:  Take a little time away from the screen before bedtime. It’s best not to use your phone in the 90 minutes before bed. Reading, meditating or drawing are relaxing alternatives that can help you to sleep soundly.

☞ Taste-buds:  Give them a break before bed. Eat your last meal at least 3 hours before bed…and no coffee for 10 hours before trying to sleep is best.

☞ Tog:  The what? It stands for ‘Thermal Overall Grade’, and is a measurement of how much a fabric insulates. Changing your duvet according to the seasons can help you sleep. A 4.5 tog is best for warmer nights, 10.5 for in-between seasons, and 13.5 for winter.

☞ Thank you: Turn out the light, say goodnight and be thankful for something. While it may sound corny, science shows expressing gratitude for things big and small satisfies us and helps us rest.

Things We’re Worse at Because of Technology

Technology helps us in a lot of ways.  But it’s also made us worse at certain things.  For example, 13% of people in a recent survey said they don’t even know their OWN phone number, because they don’t have to.

Here are the top 10 things we’ve gotten worse at because of technology . . .

  1.  Remembering passwords.
  2.  Remembering other people’s phone numbers.
  3.  Knowing how to spell certain words, because we all have spell check now.
  4.  Handwriting, because we don’t write stuff down anymore.
  5.  Math, because everyone has a calculator on their phone.
  6.  Remembering our own phone number.
  7.  Remembering who starred in movies and TV shows.
  8.  Knowing your friends’ addresses.
  9.  Being able to slow down and relax.
  10.  How to completely stop and do nothing for a while.

A few more that made the top 20 were remembering birthdays, names, and how to drive without GPS.

GARTH BROOKS TO RECEIVE KENNEDY CENTER HONORS MEDALLIAN THIS SPRING

The rescheduled 2020 Kennedy Center Honors is now set to be filmed between May 17-22, and Garth Brooks will be there to collect his honor. The 43rd Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements will also celebrate Debbie Allen, Joan Baez, Midori and Dick Van Dyke. The two-hour Honors Gala will air on June 6 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.

The Kennedy Center Honors were originally set to take place back in December but were postponed due to the pandemic. The medallian ceremony will be held during “multiple events for physically distant audiences,” according to organizers.

The usual concert featuring tributes and performances is still not going to be able to happen this spring. Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter told USA Today, “We’re clearly not going to have 2,000 people in an enclosed space for three hours, but I think we’ve come up with some really great ideas.”

Luke Combs Drinks Before, During, and After Shows

In case you missed it, there’s one more clip from LUKE COMBS’ appearance on “Straight Up Steve Austin” that’s worth checking out.

Steve asked if he drinks a beer before or during shows, and wow, does Luke stay on brand, or what?

He said, quote, “I’m a before, during, and after guy for sure.  I shotgun a beer every night, one beer . . . but I can’t do beer [during the show] because it makes me burp too much, so I do stage drink.

“That’s a heavy Jack pour, then diet [soda], no ice . . . because little-known secret of the trade is that ice cools your vocal cords down, so you have a higher chance of damaging your vocals cord drinking ice cold anything.”

TIM McGRAW SAYS NEW SINGLE HIT HIM ‘RIGHT IN THE HEART’

Tim McGraw‘s brand new duet with Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line, “Undivided,” had an immediate effect on him. He tells us that the message struck him on a personal level. [“It hit me right in the heart. It just made me sort of re-evaluate my approach to what’s going on in the world and was I letting the darkness lead me to not being as cheerful and bright and happy as I need to be to bring positive energy to my family so it was more of an internal thing to me when I heard the song.”] SOUNDCUE (:15 OC: . . . heard the song.)

“Undivided” was co-written by Tyler while he was quarantined with COVID-19 late last year.

The song was just released to radio yesterday (Wednesday, Jan. 13th).
