On Today’s Show

➢ At 6AM (MST) Monday, the buzzer was sounded at an outdoor rink near Edmonton, AB, ending the world’s longest-ever hockey game, after 252 hours (10.5 days). What has made it an even more amazing achievement for the 40 players taking part in 6-8 hour shifts, is the fact that the area is in the midst of a bone-chilling cold snap, and they have been playing in temperatures that have dropped as low as -55°C (-67°F) with the wind chill. Event founder Brent Saik says playing conditions have been “terrible”, with pucks shattering, skate blades breaking, masks falling off as glue lets go and goalie pads cracking in the cold. Participants are aiming to raise $1.5 million to fund cancer research at the University of Alberta.

➢ Just because you can see out through a small portion of your car’s windshield does not mean it’s safe to drive. Police in Dundee, Scotland, say they spotted a car being driven without any snow being properly cleared from the windshield yesterday morning (February 11th.) Police posted a photo of the car on social media, which shows just a tiny square of snow removed on the windshield while the whole front, top, and back windshield remain caked in several inches of snow. Police noted, “We know it’s inconvenient having to clear your car before you drive, but it must be done.”

➢ A power outage in Houston took down freezers with thousands of vaccine doses.  So officials scrambled to get them in people’s arms before they went bad.  A few hundred of them went to students at Rice University.  Two of those students talked about it afterward, and about the mad dash that happened to get a vaccine.

➢Alex Trebek’s son, Matthew, is honoring his father’s memory in a way that helps those in need. The late “Jeopardy!” host’s sizable wardrobe will soon be going to charity. Alex’s wife, Jean, took to Instagram to explain how proud she is of her son for donating the TV icon’s suits to The Doe Fund, a charity that helps the homeless and previously incarcerated reenter the workforce. She wrote: “It warms my heart to know that Alex’s suits will be donated to such an important cause.”

The Super Bowl “Streaker” Got Some Bad News on His $374,000 Bet

Remember the “Super Bowl Streaker,” who claimed he won $374,000 betting on HIMSELF to rush the field?

Well, that guy, Yuri Andrade, just got some bad news:  He WON’T be cashing in.

The online sportsbook Bovada says it’s “voiding” his bets . . . and all the other streaker-related bets that they’ve found to have “had knowledge” of his pre-planned attempt to run on the field.

It’s still unclear what Andrade actually bet.  He originally said that he bet $50K on himself, but there was a $1,000 limit.  He later clarified that he got a bunch of friends to make bets on his behalf and they COMBINED to win $374,000.

Bovada isn’t canceling the whole prop bet.  They ARE paying out for those their “internal investigation” concludes did not have insider knowledge of the stunt.

And those who bet that nobody would streak during the game will have their wagers refunded.  So, they’re trying to make it right for everyone else.

WHY YOU NEVER FORGET TO RIDE A BIKE

Learning to ride a bike takes a lot more brain power than you might think.

Your brain must keep you balanced, coordinate muscles, and keep your movements smooth. Jürgen Konczak is a neuroscientist with the University of Minnesota and says all of this mental energy it takes to ride a bike is exactly why we never forget how to.

The secret is we use all those brain connections we form during bike-riding in other activities as well—like for playing sports, or dancing—we just don’t use all of them at the same time.

So, once it’s time to get back on a bike, even if it’s decades later, the brain skills we need are all there, well-oiled from all their other uses, so it’s easy to remember how to ride.

FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE HEADED TO THE BAHAMAS TO RECORD UPCOMING ALBUM

Florida Georgia Line‘s fifth studio album, Life Rolls On, will be released on Friday (Feb. 12th). Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley largely completed the project prior to the global pandemic, and this time around they chose to record in a different locale.

Tyler tells us: [“It was a blast makin’ this record.  I hope that is transparent and I hope the fans can feel that through the music.  We went down to the Bahamas and spent ten days down there doing vocals on it, and we just had a blast.  We got to co-produce this record with Corey Crowder.  This is the first album we’ve done with Corey Crowder and it was just the most fun we’ve probably ever had making music.  I mean, it brought back the joy and it was quite an awesome process.”] SOUNDCUE (:22 OC: . . . an awesome process.)

Life Rolls On includes FGL’s Number One hit, “I Love My Country,” along with the other five songs that were on their 6-Pack EP which they released last summer. Additionally, it features 10 new songs, including their current single, “Long Live.”

Eric Church Would “Take the Vaccine in the Eyeball” to Go Back Onstage

Here’s how much ERIC CHURCH misses performing.  He told the The L.A. Times” that he’d take the vaccine in the eyeball if it would get him back onstage again.  He’d even open up space at his concerts for fans to get the shot.

Quote, “I wish we were in a place right now where we could use concerts to vaccinate people. [Everyone] just wants out.  Somebody asked me if I’d take the vaccine.  I said I’d take it in the eyeball to go strap on a guitar.”

One last thing.  You can add Eric to the list of artists who kept paying their people.  Quote, “I’ve been able to keep all my band and crew and all my guys . . . we’ve not even cut salaries, and I’m proud of that. “It’s been an incredibly strange and trying time, and I know I’ve got it a lot better than most people.  But I’m hopeful.”
