A couple in Texas ordered groceries during the cold weather last week.  And the delivery driver got her car stuck after she slid on ice and crashed into their flower bed.  So they just invited her in and let her stay for five days until she could get it out.

A barber in Boston is lucky to be alive after he tripped while cutting a guy’s hair, and accidentally stabbed himself in the chest with his own scissors.  The customer and another employee talked about it after they heard he’d be okay.  The cops were suspicious at first, and thought someone stabbed him, but a security camera got it all on video.

A huge sinkhole has opened up in a public park in England that used to be burial site that contained around 80,000 corpses. The sinkhole is in a park that was opened in 1914.

Memorials and structures from the cemetery are long gone but the graves themselves remain intact underground. The sink hole is believed to have formed over the site of a former crypt that was not filled in properly. Locals posted about the sinkhole on social media, with some calling it “scary,” and “eerie.”

Those in London have been urged to be careful what hey flush after a “huge, disgusting” fatberg was cleared from an east London sewer. Thames Water engineers and MTS Cleansing Services spent two weeks using high powered water jets and hand tools to gradually chip away at and eventually remove the rock-like heap, which was said to smell absolutely awful. The fatberg got stuck under Yabsley Street, clogging long sections of the sewer, and could have spilled sewage into people’s homes if it had gotten any larger. It’s the latest in a series of fatbergs that have been removed in recent years.

KOALA GOES ONTO FREEWAY, CAUSES SIX-CAR PILEUP IN AUSTRALIA

Never underestimate the destruction one cute koala can cause.

On Monday (February 8th) a koala walked onto a busy freeway in Australia, and caused a six-car pileup before climbing into a car and getting behind the wheel. The now viral photo was taken by Nadia Tugwell, who was caught in traffic behind the pileup on Adelaide’s six-lane South Eastern Freeway.

She said she was unsure of what caused the accident until she saw a woman chasing a “cute” koala, who was “stomping between the cars.” Tugwell had previous experience rescuing koalas and grabbed a jacket. She ended up catching the koala, wrapping it up, and putting it in the back of her SUV.

She then drove to a nearby gas station while waiting for a representative of the Adelaide Koala Rescue. But she says she had to then “jump out of the car at the stage when he decided to take over.”

The koala had climbed out of the truck and into the SUV’s cabin, before jumping into the driver’s seat where it gripped the wheel with both hands. The animal had moved into the backseat by the time the rescuers arrived, and was swept into a bag.

The uninjured animal was released about a half-mile from the freeway. Also, there were only minor injuries sustained by humans in the crash.

INVENTIONS WE WOULDN’T HAVE WITHOUT SPACE TRAVEL:

With NASA’s Perseverance landing on Mars last week, the age-old debate has once again surfaced: “Why spend all that money to explore other planets, when there are so many problems right here on Earth?” Here are a few reasons. Without space travel, we wouldn’t have:

Camera Phones:  Today’s tech was developed in the 90s in a quest for scientific quality cameras small enough to fit on spacecraft.

CAT Scans:  The Jet Propulsion Laboratory played a lead role in developing the technology, which in turn led to CAT scanners and radiology.

LEDs:  Red LEDs are used in space to grow plants, and to heal humans on Earth.

Athletic Shoes:  Nike Air trainers wouldn’t exist if a NASA engineer hadn’t pitched the idea when working on space suit technology.

Dust Busters:  NASA asked Black & Decker to come up with a lightweight device to collect moon samples. That lead to the Dustbuster in 1979.

Ear Thermometers:  NASA and Diatek developed the aural thermometer, which uses infrared astronomy tech to measure the energy emitted by the ear drum.

The Jaws of Life:  This uses a mini version of the explosive charge used to separate devices on the Space Shuttle.

Wireless Headsets:  NASA developed these to allow astronauts to be hands-free without wires.

Baby Formula:  It now contains a nutritional enrichment ingredient which can be traced back to NASA research into the use of algae during space travel.

Portable Computers – and the Computer Mouse:  Yup. Inspired by, and developed for space travel.

FINNISH DRESSING:

Finns looking to avoid gyms and other crowded indoor activities because of the pandemic have found a new way to keep fit – running in the snow — wearing no shoes, just thick woolen socks.

It seems Finland has seen a lot of snowfall this winter, and its hearty countrymen and women have found that running outside in just socks provides great exercise, and a sense of happiness and freedom. In Finland, in case you aren’t aware, a popular pastime involves taking a sauna, then running through snow to jump into an ice-cold lake, so this isn’t as odd as it may sound. Barefoot running has become popular in the past few years during the warmer months.

But running in socks through heavy snow, sometimes up to the knees, takes it to the next level. One expert, in the middle of a group 35k sock run, said the feeling afterwards is “just great”, likening it to that of a “good foot massage”. He recommends wearing at least 2 woolen socks, preferably 3, on each foot.

Tiger Woods Is Awake and Recovering . . . But He’s Facing a Long Road Ahead

There are finally some details on TIGER WOODS’ injuries.  According to a statement released by his team, his right leg was mangled, but Tiger is “awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room.”

An official at the hospital said that Tiger suffered open fractures, and a rod was inserted into his right tibia.  Screws and pins were used to stabilize injuries to other bones in his leg, foot, and ankle.

He also experienced “trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg,” and it was bad enough that they needed to do a surgical procedure to relieve the swelling.

There’s no mention of his left leg.  We originally heard that he injured both legs . . . but it was apparently more serious.

It sounds like Tiger will be able to recover without any serious paralysis.  That’s the important thing.

But some people want to know if this will put an end to his pro golf career.  Of course, it’s too early to say, but the New York Times talked to some doctors . . . and they’re not overly optimistic.

For starters, Tiger is 45.  In addition to recovering movement and muscle, he’s facing risks of infections and inadequate bone healing, not to mention how the crash may have affected previous injuries and his chronic back problems.

Again, Tiger is still with us . . . and he had an absolutely HISTORIC career.  If he’s able to make a comeback to some degree it’ll be a wonderful story, but even if this is the end of his playing days, there’s a lot to be thankful for.

By the way, the L.A. County Sheriff is NOT considering filing any criminal charges.  He said, quote, “This is purely an accident.”

TRISHA YEARWOOD TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19

Trisha Yearwood has tested positive for Covid-19. She and husband, Garth Brooks had been quarantining at home following a recent positive Covid test by a member of their team. So far, Garth has tested negative.

Garth commented and said, “The Queen and I have now tested twice. Officially, she’s diagnosed as ‘on her way out of the tunnel’ now. Which, I’m extremely thankful for.”

Severe winter weather in Tennessee prevented the couple from getting tested until almost a week after their initial exposure; once they did, they continued to quarantine together.

According to Garth, Trisha is doing okay so far, but is dealing with symptoms. He said, “She’s tough. She’s stronger than me.”

He ended by saying, “We’re very lucky she is currently under the greatest care – in the best city for treating and healing singers.”

CARLY PEARCE WILL ALWAYS SING ABOUT HER LIFE, GOOD OR BAD

Carly Pearce‘s new seven-song project, 29, was released last Friday and it includes some of the most personal songs of her life. She has said the new music lets listeners know what she experienced with the untimely loss of her producer, Busbee, and her short marriage to and divorce from Michael Ray. But is she nervous about the reaction those insightful songs will draw from Michael or others close to the situation? Carly tells us: [“What have I always done? I sing about my life. I sing and I try to interpret what goes on in my life the best way that I can. That’s what I started with when I was 25 years old and I’m doing nothing different in writing this music, and, you know, I’m writing from a place of speaking for what all women and men — I mean, I have some men tell me they really can relate to ‘Next Girl’ — but I’m just doing what I’ve always done.”]
