On Today’s Show
March 1, 2021 9:35 am➢ A World War Two vet in Fort Lauderdale named Donald Dennis just got his wedding ring back five years after he lost it at a grocery store in Minnesota. Someone found it while the store was being remodeled, and saw his wife’s name inscribed in it. Donald’s daughter surprised him with the ring on his 100th birthday this last weekend.
➢ A guy in the U.K. recently ended up on the list of people who were at high-risk for COVID and could get a vaccine. And he was confused, because he’s healthy and only 32. It turned out it was all caused by a hilarious computer glitch. (In the system, he was listed as 6.2 centimeters tall instead of 6-foot-2. So his body mass index was sky high.)
➢ A woman in Kentucky got a tattoo on March 4th of last year saying, quote, “Courageously and radically refuse to wear a mask.” She meant it metaphorically. Then the pandemic happened. And once anti-maskers became a thing, she says she spent the entire year wearing long sleeves to keep the tattoo covered up. (On March 6th, Kentucky announced its first case of COVID-19.)
➢ According to the old saying, “money can’t buy happiness,” but a new study has found that…yeah…that’d be wrong. Although previous studies have found there’s a limit to how much a person’s income impacts their happiness, new research says the sky’s the limit when it comes to money’s influence over well-being. They studied over 33,000 people. Other studies have concluded that money stops mattering at income levels of around $75,000. The new study, however, revealed that rising income continues to affect the earner’s well-being even into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
➢ LADY GAGA got her dogs back and the dog-walker Ryan Fischer is expected to make a full recovery. His family said he’s “receiving extraordinary care in the hospital.” A woman turned them in to the police on Friday. She wasn’t involved or associated with the attack . . . so Gaga will give her the $500,000 reward. The thieves are still on the loose. TMZ says the they were found tied to a pole in an alley, “miles away” from where they were abducted
TODAY IS……………….

FOUR RANDOM FACTS
- The dinosaurs are only on screen for 15 minutes total in the original “Jurassic Park”.
- The first feature film ever made from a Marvel comic book was . . . “Howard the Duck”in 1986. And it bombed.
- At one point, “Jay” was slang for “foolish person.” So, when a pedestrian ignored street signs, he was a “jaywalker.”
- Philadelphia Cream Cheese was actually created in Chester, New York.

GOOD NEWS
A five-year-old in Pennsylvania named Rosyln Kane was having nightmares.
So her dad reached out to a men’s choir in the U.K., because she loves their YouTube videos.
And they recorded a lullaby just for her and her sister Evelyn.
(It’s called “Rosyln’s Lullaby,” but they used both girls’ names in the lyrics.)

SCIENCE NEWS:
- If you haven’t seen the crazy footageof the new Mars rover touching down, it’s pretty amazing. And people online spotted a hidden message in its parachute. It turns out the super-nerds at NASA used patterns in the parachute to spell out a message in binary computer code. And translated, it says to, quote, “Dare Mighty Things.” (The rover also sent back the first true audio ever recorded on Mars.)
- Scientists confirmed the orbit of the most distant object in our solar system, and it’s got a great name . . . it’s called “Farfarout.” They named it that because before they discovered it, they found another rock floating out there and named that one “Farout.” But this one’s farther. It’s a hundred times farther away from the sun than we are, and a full orbit takes about a thousand years.
- In similar-but-opposite news: Biologists accidentally found life under Antarctica. They threaded a tiny camera down a 3,000-foot borehole in an ice shelf to look at the seabed. And it landed on a boulder with 16 sea sponges and 22 tiny animals that look like barnacles. No one’s sure how they survive there. (Here’s a video.)
- And a team of sleep scientistsfound you can still communicate with people while they’re dreaming. Volunteers were able to hear and answer questions, even while they were technically asleep. The study involved people who can “lucid dream,” which is when you’re aware you’re dreaming, and can even control what happens in them.

SAY BYE TO DRY EYES:
If you’ve been spending all day in front of a computer like many people during the pandemic, your eyes may be feeling the effects. But here’s some good news: a behavioral optometrist says that our vision should improve as our lives get back to ‘normal’, after the worst of the pandemic.
Bhavin Shah, who also works as a myopia (near-sightedness) management consultant in London, UK, believes that many people have overworked their eyes, and they could use some recovery time. He has seen an increase in patients experiencing eyestrain, fatigue, and tired and blurry eyes, but says the simple acts of commuting to work and working in an office atmosphere allows for more breaks and natural eyes movements and focusing.
This will allow our eyes to get the rest and recovery time they need, and from there, things should definitely start to “look up.”
Five Cooking Mistakes You’re Making, According to Chefs
Someone recently asked professional chefs for the top cooking mistakes us average Joes are making. Does cereal count as cooking?
Here are the highlights . . .
- Don’t use dull knives. You’re actually more likely to cut yourself. So sharpen those babies up . . . then be careful.
- Stop cutting your vegetables unevenly. If you take time to cut them evenly, they’ll cook more evenly.
- Don’t leave a huge mess of pots and pans. Knock out some of those dishes during prep, so it’s not so overwhelming at the end.
- Taste everything as you go, and adjust if something doesn’t taste right. That way there’s still time to fix it.
- Stop constantly checking your food in the oven. Opening the door lets heat fly out, and your oven has to preheat again.

MAREN MORRIS IS ACM’S MOST NOMINATED FEMALE IN ‘WEIRDEST YEAR OF THE MUSIC”
Maren Morris leads this year’s ACM Awards nominations, tied for most with six: Female Artist of the Year, which she took home at last year’s awards; Single of the Year and Song of the Year (as writer and performer) for her hit “The Bones;” Group of the Year with The Highwomen; and Video of the Year for “ Better Than We Found It,” on which Maren partnered with emerging director Gabby Woodland for whom this is the first nomination.
Maren talked about it just before the nominations were announced, and while she didn’t know which awards she’s be up for, she was very interested to see who would get nominated in such an off year due to COVID. [“I’m super excited. There’s been so much great music and it’s been such a creative time for artists in our genre. This last year even though no one can tour, some amazing albums and singles have been released so I’m . . . this is like our first real nomination cycle for an award show to come out after a year of COVID, so I’m wondering, like, where the nominations go because it’s just been the weirdest year of the music industry.”]
The ACM Awards will air live from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House, Ryman Auditorium and Bluebird Cafe on Sunday, April 18th at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
BROTHERS OSBORNE ‘TRYING TO KEEP BUSY’ DURING PANDEMIC
Everyone is dealing with the pandemic in their own way and in a lot of cases, learning how to slow down. TJ and John of Brothers Osborne are doing the same. John tells us how he’s handling it: [“We have to keep ourselves busy. TJ and I grew up just working really hard, and we’re busy bodies. We’ve never been mandated to take some time off, so we just work all the time. So, the very first thing we had to learn how to do was just slow it down a little bit, and then simply working around the house or yard work, those cathartic experiences that we don’t get a lot of because we’re always out on the road. The cool thing about it all is we’re only doing it when we want to do it. There’s no rush to do anything. There’s no time frame, there’s no deadline. It’s just waking up every day and going, ‘I feel like doing this today. This is what I want to do,’ and there’s something really nice about that.”]
LUKE BRYAN SAYS HE’S GOOD AT SOCIAL DISTANCING
The pandemic has created big changes for everyone and Luke Bryan says that between fishing and hunting trips, he can go isolate pretty good a home. And about social distancing, he says “I rock that.”
But after a year of waiting to get back out on the road, when the moment comes to hit the stage again, he will be emotional.
In an interview posted on Taste of Country, Luke admitted that he had gotten “a little calloused” and sometimes felt obligated, not lucky, to keep up with soundchecks, meet-and-greets and the other responsibilities. Seeing it all go away for so long has helped him “reset and recalibrate” his “appreciation.”
Luke says he has cherished being at home with his family over the past year.
