On Today’s Show

Six years ago this week, the CEO of a company called Gravity Payments announced he was slashing his own salary and paying ALL of his 130 employees at least $70,000 a year.  Which a lot of people thought was nuts.  But he posted an update the other day: He’s added 70 more workers since then, and revenue has tripled.  (Here’s a clip that includes his original announcement to employees, plus some more recent statements about it.)

Have you torn up the carpet in your house since you moved in?  You REALLY never know what you might find under there . . .

Someone posted a photo on Reddit that showed how their in-laws ripped up their carpet . . . and found a huge MONOPOLY BOARD painted on the floor.

The best theory in the comments is that it was part of a short trend in the 1950s where some people painted or tiled game boards into their floor.

A 13-year-old girl from New Mexico named Kaydence Henslee was staying at a hotel in Orlando with her family.  And she ended up saving a toddler from drowning in the pool.  The little girl’s mom only stepped away for a few minutes.  But luckily, Kaydence was paying attention and pulled the girl out.  Then someone did CPR, and she’s okay.  (Here’s an interview with Henslee and the toddler’s mom.)

Netflix has renewed its biggest new original series, “Bridgerton,” for seasons 3 and 4, before the second season has even finished shooting. Season 2 is currently in production and, in keeping with the novels it’s based on, tells a new romance story — that of ‘Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s’ quest for love. Sadly for fans of the show, Season 1 star Regé-Jean Page’s character, the ‘Duke of Hastings’, will not return for the second season.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “ASL Day”, a day of observance celebrating American Sign Language. On April 15, 1817.

  • “McDonald’s Day”, the anniversary of the day in 1955 when Ray Kroc opened a McDonald’s in Des Plaines, Illinois. This was the first franchised McD’s, and the 9thMcDonald’s restaurant overall. He helped make McDonald’s the best-known fast-food restaurant in the world.

The Betting Odds of Humans Making Alien Contact Are Down to 20-to-1

In case you haven’t heard, last week, the Pentagon confirmed that a leaked UFO video that surfaced online was REAL Navy footage . . . and they can’t explain it.

So does that mean we’re going to make alien contact soon?  The online betting sites sure think so.

The odds of alien contact this year dropped from 200-to-1 before the Pentagon announcement to 20-to-1 . . . and the odds of contact this MONTH dropped from 500-to-1 to 50-to-1.  So, um, let’s hope they come in peace.

Police Find a Suspicious Item in a Park . . . A Homemade UFO Detector

Last week, the Pentagon confirmed that a leaked UFO video was real.  So it seems like people are ramping up for alien contact . . .

The police in New Jersey got a report about a weird object in a park last week with wire coming out of it.  And when they investigated, they found the device was . . . a homemade UFO detector.

The UFO detector was a headphone cord plugged into a soup can attached to a piece of wood.  The police say they “disarmed” it by unplugging the headphone cord.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1. The eight pawns on a chessboard all used to have their own names based on non-royalty jobs:  Gambler, policeman, innkeeper, merchant, doctor, weaver, blacksmith, and farmer.

  1. Carrots were originally several colors, and the most common one was purple.  But Dutch farmers in the 16th century bred red and yellow carrots to make orange ones, since it was their royal color . . . and those became the standard.

  1. It takes 248 years for Pluto to orbit the sun.  That means between the time Pluto was discovered in 1930, named a planet, and then eventually declassified and demoted to a “dwarf planet” in 2006, it didn’t even make it halfway through one orbit.

  1. Even though one of Bryan Adams’ biggest hits was “Summer of ’69”, he was only 9 years old in the actual summer of ’69.

GOOD NEWS

A Georgia man who received his final pay in the form of over 90,000 oil-soaked pennies from a disgruntled former employer has experienced a change for the better.

Andreas Flaten found a pile of 91,515 pennies on his driveway in March with an explicit note attached to them, apparently from his old boss. The body shop where he worked had reportedly denied Flaten his last paycheck and only paid up with the greasy pennies after Flaten contacted the Department of Labor.

But the Coinstar company, known for its coin-cashing kiosks, came to the rescue after the story went viral. Coinstar picked up the coins, which Flaten had stored in a wheelbarrow with wheels that had deflated from the staggering weight and gave him $1,000 in cash.

Because the coins were covered in “an oily substance”, Flaten had been spending a few hours each night trying to clean them and says he had only managed to “clean up about $5 worth”.

What’s Something You Used to Do That a Teenager Today Wouldn’t Be Able to Understand?

Teenagers today were born between 2001 and 2008.  So it’s safe to say their childhoods looked a hell of a lot different than yours.

Right now, people on Reddit are sharing things they used to do that teenagers today wouldn’t be able to understand.  Here are some great ones . . .

“Recording songs from the radio using a tape recorder.”

“Spending 15 minutes untwisting a phone cord.”

“Cleaning the mouse ball.”

“Calling a phone number and having to ask if the person was there.”

“Getting off the phone so someone else could use the Internet.”

“Calling a phone number to get the time.”

“Loving the smell of mimeograph papers.”

“Stopping at a gas station to ask for directions.”

“Turning to channel three to play a video game.”

DID YOU KNOW?
A new study has confirmed the theory that redheads are less susceptible to pain than people with other hair colors.

Researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital found, in a seemingly paradoxical study, that redheads have a naturally high tolerance to pain — wait for it — due to a mechanism that ups their susceptibility to sunburns.

The research found that the cells that determine skin color — called melanocytes — play a large role in deciding how people experience pain.

Because gingers boast a faulty melanocyte, they can’t process enough dark pigment to tan, which has the added effect of elevating their threshold for hurt.

Netflix Is Going to Teach You How to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

A good night’s sleep has been hard to come by for a lot of people over the past year.  And now Netflix . . . which probably shares some of the blame . . . is coming to the rescue.

They’re teaming up with the meditation app Headspace for an animated series called “Headspace Guide to Sleep”.

It’ll explore, quote, “the science behind a healthy night’s sleep and provide tips on how to get the best sleep you’ve ever had.”

Each 15-minute episode explores a new topic, like insomnia, stress, whether looking at your phone in bed is really that bad, and sleeping pills.

And they end with a “guided wind-down designed to help you on your journey to better sleep.”

It’ll be out in two weeks.

CARLY PEARCE’S ACM NOD IS SOMETHING SHE ALWAYS DREAMED OF

Carly Pearce is both a nominee and performer at this weekend’s ACM Awards. She is nominated in three categories — Single and Musical Event of the Year for “I Hope You’re Happy Now,” and Female Artist of the Year.  All of the nominations are meaningful to Carly, but being included in the Female Artist of the Year category is something Carly tells us she has always dreamed about. [“When I think about being nominated for Female Artist of the Year, I think about the dreams that I’ve had of being nominated in this category. I think as a woman in country music, if you grew up the way that I did, wanting this so badly, you dreamt of your name being called in that, and so I truly am not just saying this.  I feel like I’ve already won just being in those five.”]

Carly faces competition from Ashley McBryde, Kelsea Ballerini, Maren Morris and Miranda Lambert in the Female Artist category.

Carly will also be performing “I Hope You’re Happy Now” for the first time with Lee Brice on live television. The ACM Awards airs on Sunday (April 18th) on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

Watch an Opossum Eat Blake Shelton’s Food from the Smoker

BLAKE SHELTON turned his back on some food he cooked in the smoker on his back deck, and when he returned an opossum was having a feast.  Can’t blame the poor critter.  Heck, I’ve had friends who’d steal my barbecue if I left it unattended.

Blake posted two clips of the encounter.  The first is the food thievery . . . and in the second he’s petting the opossum, which is perched on a railing.

He wrote, “At least I made a new buddy.  Also, I don’t recommend petting wild animals.  It just so happens that I have the vodka reflexes of a rattlesnake.”
