Three guys in their 20’s were having a brawl in the eighth-floor hallway of an apartment building in Philly when they broke through a set of elevator doors . . . and all three fell at least seven stories down the elevator shaft.  Somehow, they all survived.  (Here’s Upper Merion Police Lt. Al Elverson and IUEC Local 5 Business Manager Joe Williams.)

A man from Zimbabwe, Tawanda Kanhema, realized that he couldn’t find his hometown on Google Street View.  So, he took matters into his own hands and volunteered to map Zimbabwe himself.

Because of high demand, lumber has emerged as the hottest commodity of this year’s home, deck and fence construction season, and as a result, it has reached all-time high prices. But home builders are reporting that lumber is also a hot commodity for thieves. Akash Home of Edmonton has been hit at several job sites this spring, causing losses of around $100,000. After dark, thieves used on-site machinery to load massive bundles of wood onto their own trailers, sometimes taking product from 2 or 3 builders in the same neighbourhood. Wood is now being marked with spray paint to help identify it if it turns up at another job site or for sale online.

The steep increases in wood prices that many countries have recently experienced are resulting in more expensive toilet paper. Prices for market pulp have jumped from US $606 per metric ton in September to more than $907 in April.  Kimberly Clark, the maker of Scott toilet paper, has already announced increases in prices to retailers, saying they “are necessary to help offset significant commodity cost inflation.”

This sounds like a tough gig: A company is offering to pay 5 people $1,500 each to take a nap every day for a month. The mattress review company “Eachnight” is looking for “nap reviewers”, who will be required to sleep alone, and “take part in a variety of experiments testing out theories such as the best nap duration for feeling refreshed, the effects of napping on overall levels of fatigue, and the effects of napping on memory, motivation and productivity.”

Duties also include participating in video calls and completing a questionnaire about the nap. Eachnight is accepting applications from all over the world until May 31.

COUNTRY MUSIC NOTE

1990  Clint Black was at #1 with his debut album Killin’ Time. The album with the success of its first four singles, (“A Better Man”, “Walking Away”, “Nobody’s Home”, and “Killin’ Time”), was a huge hit upon release, and established Black as one of the biggest new stars in country music.

POSITIONS IN BED:
One worry during the pandemic for many has been getting enough sleep. Here’s something else to worry about, especially if you ARE getting enough sleep – If you sleep on your stomach, it’s aging you prematurely.

Dermatologist Dr. Bruce Robinson says stomach sleepers (and to an extent, side-sleepers) create a friction between the face and the pillow that can add years to your face in the form of wrinkles.  Stomach sleepers in particular also tend to develop more forehead lines. Side sleepers may be more prone to deeper wrinkles or creases on the sides of their faces, and creases on the cheeks and chin.

That pretty much only leaves sleeping on the back as an alternative, and the doctor says doing so not only lets you avoid that skin friction, but also keeps bacteria on the pillow from coming in contact with your face.

But if you do, be sure to slightly elevate your head, or fluid will gather around your eyes, leading to puffiness the next day.

GOOD NEWS

A mobile soup kitchen is cruising the streets of Detroit carrying COVID-19 vaccine doses as well as food.

The van is delivering either or both to people who are unable to get to the churches, community centers and other places where vaccines are being administered.

Detroit is lagging far behind nearby communities in the percentage of people vaccinated.

Only about 33% of Detroit residents ages 16 and older have been vaccinated compared to more than half statewide.

ENDANGERED CONDORS TRASH HOME OF CALIFORNIA MOM

A woman named Seana Quintero Tweeted last week about how 15 California condors had made a mess of her mother’s deck. She wrote, “Over the weekend ~15 California condors descended on my [mom’s] house and absolutely trashed her deck. They still haven’t left. It sucks but also this is unheard of, [there are] only 160 of these birds flying free in the state and a flock of them decided to start a war with my mom.”

She also attached photos showing the damage. Quintero added that her mom was “reaching out to condor groups” in an effort to “maybe keep them off her house.”

‘HANGRY’ ALLIGATOR RELOCATED AFTER CHASING CUSTOMERS AT WENDYS

Alligators don’t usually show up in the parking lots of fast food joints, but not all alligators are the same. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Florida says deputies responded, along with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission personnel, after they got a call about a “hangry” alligator that chased customers through the parking lot of a Wendy’s. The authorities posted about the whole thing on Twitter, writing, “He may have just been ‘hangry’ for a cheeseburger, but he gave many quite the scare! Alongside FWC, we wrangled the gator and safely relocated it.”

DON’T ACT YOUR AGE:
It turns out that the old saying, “Age is just a number”, is true. And that one about, “You’re as young as you feel”? That’s true too.

According to a new study those who psychologically feel younger than they are, are more likely to maintain their health into old age.

More specifically, they found that stress levels significantly contribute to one’s subjective age, which is whether they experience themselves as younger or older than their actual age.

The Scientists found that those who reported more stress in their lives demonstrated a more drastic decline in overall health as they aged.

This correlation was present among every age group examined, but it was much more pronounced for older participants.

The researchers suggest that programs aimed at helping people feel younger could reduce the harm caused by stress and improve health among older adults.

Colonial Pipeline, which operates the largest fuel pipeline in the U.S. that delivers about 45 percent of the gas consumed on the East Coast, said it needed to do everything in its power to quickly and safely restart its pipeline system after shutting it down when it learned of the May 7th ransomware attack.

OLD DOMINION TO HEAD OUT ON SUMMER BALLPARK TOUR

Old Dominion have announced their headlining We Are Old Dominion: Live at the Ballpark Tour, set to launch on July 17th at The Ballpark at Jackson in Jackson, Tennessee. They have tapped Scotty McCreery, Randy Houser, Matt Stell, Blanco Brown, Caitlyn Smith and Walker County to open the shows. The band has only revealed seven shows, however additional dates are expected to be added.

Old Dominion has missed the stage and the fans over the past year due to Covid, but they have also missed each other. Brad Tursi and Matthew Ramsey tell us: [“What I missed, which comes back immediately when we all get together is just the laughter. Everybody equally cracks me up. (Matthew) Yeah, we laugh a lot in this group and that was sorely missed. It’s like we definitely have a connection and a sense of humor that sometimes gets us in trouble but it’s really fine tuned amongst the five of us (laughter), so it was hard to not be around that.”]
