On Today’s Show
May 19, 2021 9:35 am➢ 78-year-old Samford University graduate, Vivian Cunningham, fulfilled her lifelong dream and earned a college degree. She says she might even get her masters degree after some well deserved rest.
➢ Spanish authorities have busted a criminal gang that made millions of euros annually by specializing in counterfeiting the world’s most expensive spice – saffron. The 17 members of the gang are accused of importing cheaper Iranian saffron and mixing it with EU-approved Spanish saffron for distribution in Europe. The arrests follow a year’s long investigation launched after it became apparent in 2013 that most Spanish saffron was bogus. Saffron has long been regarded as the world’s most expensive spice by weight at around £6,000 per kilo and criminals have targeted its market before: last year UK police reported a £45,000 saffron heist from a London warehouse.
➢ It turns out dancing bears are better at mating. University of Alberta researchers looked at 213 brown bears in the Alberta Rocky Mountains. They found bears that rubbed up against trees more frequently and at more sites do better with members of the opposite sex and in number of offspring produced. For male bears, every site they rub against increases the number of mates by 1.38 times, and each additional rub increases the number of cubs by 1.37 times. The results suggest that “rubbing” against a tree (or fence posts or power poles) may have a fitness component, with those doing it being seen as “more attractive” to female bears.
➢ Everyone thinks Meghan Markle dropped into Prince Harry’s life, brainwashed him, and tore him away from his family. But, on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, he says he wanted out since his early 20s.
COUNTRY MUSIC NOTE
1997 MCA records released Trisha Yearwood’s version of “How Do I Live”. Written by Diane Warren. the song was originally intended for release as a single from the 1997 Con Air soundtrack. Disney (who owns Touchstone Pictures) felt Rimes’ version had too much of a pop feel and because she was fourteen it was believed that she was too young. Trisha Yearwood was chosen to re-record the song.

Tired Old Myths People Still Believe
Here are tired old myths that a lot of people still think are true . . .
Myth #1: Cracking your knuckles causes arthritis. It might cause weakness in your hands, but there’s no proof it causes full-on arthritis.
Myth #2: We only use 10% of our brain. A survey a while back found two-thirds of us believe that one. But even with simple tasks, you’re still using most of your brain. It takes so much energy that up to a fifth of the calories you eat go toward keeping your brain working.
Myth #3: Dogs see in black-and-white. The newest science says they probably DO see colors, just not as many as we do. They’re basically red-green colorblind.
Myth #4: Shaving makes your hair grow back thicker. Some people think that because the tips of your hair feels coarser after they’re been cut. But shaving doesn’t make it grow back thicker.
Myth #5: You swallow eight spiders a year in your sleep. It’s just an urban legend. As far as anyone can tell, there’s no truth to it.
Myth #6: Coffee stunts your growth. The main thing that CAN stunt a kid’s growth is poor nutrition. But coffee and caffeine don’t do it.
Myth #7: Your dog’s mouth is cleaner than our own. Also not true. Dogs and humans BOTH have around 600 different types of bacteria in their mouth. Plus, we brush our teeth every day . . . and you’ve seen what your dog eats.
Myth #8: Public swimming pools have a chemical that turns blue if you pee in them. That’s just something parents tell their kids. There’s no chemical that can do that just to urine.

GOOD NEWS
Joshua Nelson landed a scholarship to Southeast Missouri State University. Now, he’s paying it forward by giving away his college savings.
Nelson, a senior at St. Charles West High School, is one of only five students selected for the prestigious President’s Scholarship at the university.
It’s a full four-year scholarship for tuition and board. With that out of the way, Nelson used the $1,000 he had saved for college to create the Joshua Nelson Leaders in Action Scholarship, which aims “to help multicultural students who are showing leadership, community service and just have great qualities in and out of the classroom.”
Local matching donations are being sought so that more students can benefit.

MAN PUNCHED IN THE FACE FOR NOT BUYING ANOTHER MAN COFFEE
Canadians have a reputation for being so nice, but things happen. Police in Winnipeg say they were patrolling in the West Broadway neighborhood Monday morning (May 10th) when they saw a man in his 30s waiting in his vehicle in a drive-thru line when another man randomly approached and asked the driver to buy him a cup of coffee. When the driver refused, police say they saw the other man reach through the open driver-side window and punch the victim in the face. The suspect was immediately arrested and was charged with assault causing bodily harm and remains in police custody.
WOMAN ASSAULTED WITH MEAT AT OHIO WALMART
Tension in high in an Ohio Walmart recently. South Euclid police say they were called to the potato chip aisle for a disturbance between two women. They say one woman threatened the other and her seven-year-old daughter. She pulled down her mask and attempted to spit on the victim, but missed, and then she hit the victim in the face with a ten-pound log of packaged meat. The 25-year-old suspect was arrested, and charged with assault and violating a temporary protection order. It turns out the victim had a protection order against the other woman following an incident at the University Heights duplex, where they both live.

WEDNESDAY MAY 19TH
- PIT 2 – NYI 1 (1-1) TBL 3 – FLA 1 (2-0 TB) VGK 3 – MIN 1 (1-1)
Blue Jays 8 Red Sox 0 Tigers 5 Mariners 0
- Detroit Tigers pitcher Spencer Turnbull threw a no-hitter last night against the Mariners in Seattle. He’s the first Tiger to do it since Justin Verlander in 2011. It’s a big turn around from his MLB-worst record in 2019, losing 17 games.
- In case you missed it. During the Mets vs. Braves game on Monday night, Mets outfielder Kevin Pillar got hit in the faceby a 94-MPH fastball. He went to the hospital and has “multiple nasal fractures”. (Kevin was speaking to the media yesterday. He still has guaze sticking out of his nose, black and blue eyes, and his nose is crushed.)
- Actor Charles Grodin died yesterday of bone cancer. He was 86 years old. He was the Dad in the first two “Beethoven” movies. He was also in “Rosemary’s Baby”, “Midnight Run” with Robert De Niro, and “Clifford”. (Here’s a montage of those movies.)
We Plan to Spend an Extra Week Outside to Make Up for Last Summer
Believe it or not, there actually WAS a summer outside last year . . .
So naturally, we’re looking to ramp things up this summer to make up for lost time.
According to a new poll, 75% of people plan on being “more active” this summer than ever before. Some of the activities people are most looking forward to include: swimming, walking or running, playing a group sport, and cycling. On average, we plan on spending a FULL EXTRA WEEK outside this summer compared to last year.
And 72% said they want this summer to feel as close as possible to a normal, pre-pandemic summer. (I don’t know anyone who DOESN’T want to get back to pre-pandemic summers . . . so I’m curious what the other 28% are thinking.)
Dustin Lynch Is Working on His Private Pilot’s License
Here’s another country star making me feel guilty for getting nothing done during the pandemic. DUSTIN LYNCH took advantage of his downtime to “learn some new skills.”
Quote, “My most recent endeavor is working on my private pilot’s license. I’m hard at work learning how to fly planes.”
The surprising part is that he thought it would be a snap. Quote, “I figured ‘I can drive a boat, I can drive a motorcycle, this will be fine.’ No. There’s a lot going on and the stakes are so high.
“I want to be proficient, so I’ve got a ways to go before I feel comfortable taking someone up and down on a regular basis. But that’s the dream. I hope I can knock it out before we start touring, and then I can get to and from [shows] a lot easier.”

SAM HUNT TOPS COUNTRY CHARTS WITH ‘BREAKING UP WAS EASY IN THE 90S’
Sam Hunt tops both the Country Aircheck/Mediabase and Billboard Country charts this week with his latest single, “Breaking Up Was Easy in the 90s.” He co-wrote the song, which is his career eighth Number One.
Sam tells us: [“My buddy, Josh Osborne, called me one afternoon when I was driving home from Nashville. He called me with this idea, ‘I Bet Breaking Up Was Easy in the 90s.’ He said, ‘I feel like it sounds like you.’ I said, ‘Man, I love it. Let’s write that.’ So, fast forward several months we did a little writing retreat outside town, rented a little cabin and wrote the song. It was kind of the ninth hour in terms of the second record coming out.”] SOUNDCUE (:24 OC: . . . record coming out.)
