On Today’s Show
June 2, 2021 9:35 am➢ After five weeks of hiding, a New Zealand fugitive took a helicopter to the police station to surrender, but not before stopping for oysters and champagne. Here’s James Bryant and his advocate Arthur Taylor talking about the situation.
➢ Residents of a Florida home had an unusual start to their day a few weeks ago when a large chunk of ice fell out of the sky and punched a hole in their roof. The Sheriff’s Office said there were no reports of injuries from the ice chunk. Deputies said they do not yet have an explanation for where the ice chunk came from.
This is not what anyone wants to be awoken by. Ken Millermon says last Tuesday he was in his bed at his home in Elk Mound, Wisconsin, when a 12.6-pound chunk of ice crashed through the roof and into his room. The National Weather Service said the storm clouds in the area at the time were not strong enough to produce hail the size of the ice chunk. The sheriff’s office says the origins of the ice chunk are unknown. Millermon says he was lucky the chunk only “grazed him.”
➢ A drug dealer in England thought he was the big cheese — until a block of creamy Stilton led to his arrest. Liverpool resident Carl Stewart was arrested after he posted a photo of himself holding the small block of cheese on an encrypted messaging service. The service had been cracked by police in Europe, and from the photo, his palm and fingerprints were analyzed. The 39-year-old was sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison at Liverpool Crown Court last week.
➢ This got posted over the weekend . . . A guy and his wife were parasailing off the coast of Southern California . . . and had totally opposite reactions. Listen to it, here.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS
- 40% of cats are left-handed, and another 10% are ambidextrous.
- Tempura isn’t a Japanese invention . . . it’s Portuguese. Missionaries from Portugal introduced it to Japan in the late 1500s, and the people there really took to it.
- Amethyst got its name from the ancient Greek phrase for “not drunk” . . . because there was a belief that if you put the stones in your alcohol, it would keep you from getting too drunk.
- If you win a prize on “The Price Is Right”, you have to pay California income taxes on it before they’ll give it to you.

GOOD NEWS
Back in 2009, a 15-year-old kid tried to get a dog park built in his town in northern New Jersey.
His mom was a big fan of the idea, and sadly she’s no longer with us. But before she passed away, he told her he’d get it done.
So he’s spent the past 12 years raising $85,000 to pay for it.
And it finally opened just in time for Mother’s Day.

MOUNTAIN LION CRASHES THROUGH WINDOW INTO CALIFORNIA HOME
This is pretty crazy. The San Bruno Police Department in California says a cougar broke through a window of a San Bruno home around 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday (May 25th.) They say they think the animal made its dramatic entrance because of “several large game, taxidermy trophy heads, mounted on the interior walls of the residence.” The homeowner scared the animal and says it left through the same window. There were no injuries reported. The police department says that mountain lions are typically not dangerous to the public and will avoid interactions with humans.
SEVEN BEARS CRASH HIGH SCHOOL POOL PARTY IN TENNESSEE
They definitely weren’t invited. Seven bears recently crashed a pool party in Tennessee. Michelle Johnson posted a video to YouTube showing what happened when the Jefferson County High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (or JROTC) attempted to have a party at the Chalet Village pool in Gatlinburg. The video shows the bears swimming and wandering outside the pool after the students fled to a safe distance. Johnson wrote, “Black bears in the Great Smoky Mountains are beautiful but please be respectful, keep your distance, and don’t feed them. The guys at Chalet Villa said they had never seen so many at one time.”
GIANT TORTOISE FOUND IN GALAPAGOS FROM SPECIES THOUGHT TO BE EXTINCT:
Genetic tests have confirmed that a giant tortoise found in the Galapagos Islands is from a species scientists thought had become extinct more than a century ago. The single female tortoise was discovered during a 2019 expedition to Fernandina Island. The remains of a male specimen from 115 years ago allowed Yale University geneticists to determine that the female is indeed a Chelonoidis phantasticus, also known as Fernandina giant tortoise.

The Average Person Thinks They Could Survive 16 Days in the Wilderness
The average person thinks that if you dropped them in the middle of nowhere, they could survive in the wilderness for 16 days.
Again, that’s SURVIVE . . . not survive comfortably. So as long as you could find water and not freeze to death, you might make it.
The “not freezing” part might be tough though because less than one in five Americans are confident they could start a fire if they only had flint. And without flint, it’s probably closer to zero percent.
Only one in seven think they’d be able to tell which plants and berries were edible, and which ones might kill them. And two-thirds of us don’t know what poison ivy looks like.
The survey also found that after a year of lockdowns and pandemic stress, 63% of us have a newfound appreciation for nature and being outdoors.

MAJOR MEAT PRODUCER – CYBERATTACK
JBS SA, the world’s largest meat processing company that was the target of a cyberattack, said late Tuesday (June 1st) that it expects most of its plants to be operating today because it had made, quote, “significant progress” in dealing with the attack.
The White House had said earlier in the day that Brazil-based JBS had notified the U.S. that it was a ransomware attack, and that the company had received a ransom demand from a criminal organization likely based in Russia.
JBS said the cyberattack it had revealed Monday affected servers supporting its operations in North America and Australia.

BLAKE SHELTON LEAVES WEDDING PLANNING UP TO GWEN STEFANI
Blake Shelton is leaving the wedding planning up to his fiancee, Gwen Stefani.
While he says that she’s “always mindful” of him when it comes to making choices, Blake admits she’s got better taste.
He explained, “If I was picking our meal, it would just literally be everything fried — french fries, chicken tenders, you know, all of that stuff. I think she knows that it would be a pretty classless wedding if I was in control.”
He added, “I want her to do all of that stuff and handle it because it’s going to be great. She’s in the middle of planning the thing, and she’s always so mindful … of me. She’s like, ‘Hey, I don’t want to just take this thing over.’ I think she’s having a blast doing it. I mean, I know she’s having a blast doing it.”
After five years of dating, the couple got engaged in October. They have not publicly announced a wedding date, but have said their special day will be very intimate with just family and close friends in attendance. Blake released his new album, Body Language, on Friday (May 21st).
