A 56-year-old lobster diver says he survived being swallowed by a humpback whale and then spat out. But at least one doctor isn’t so sure.

Michael showed up at an emergency room in Cape Cod.  And one of the doctors there says that if he came up from 45 feet that fast, he should have had THE BENDS.  Meaning his body wouldn’t have had time to deal with the pressure change.  But the medical report only mentioned some light bruising, and nothing serious.  Here is Michael Packard explaining what happened.

A mysterious black substance has been staining the feet of visitors at Maine beaches.  And experts now say it’s the crushed remains of tiny insects.  (Here’s Anne King and recently retired oceanographer John Lillibridge.)

Social distancing is becoming less necessary which means hugs are coming back.  That being said from people saying hugs are “uncomfortable” to their “face is being pushed directly in someone’s chest”… according to a new article not everyone is excited.

The iconic Los Angeles mansion from “The Godfather” is up for sale…with a price tag of $89.75 million. The Hearst estate was built in 1927, and is named for politician William Randolph Hearst, who was an early tenant. The mansion, called one of the 10 most-iconic homes in LA”, features 8 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, a two-story paneled library, two screening rooms, and an art deco nightclub. The exterior was used in scenes of The Godfather, as well as “The Bodyguard.” It was also used in Beyoncé’s “Black is King” music film.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Fly a Kite Day”, on the anniversary of the date in 1752 when Benjamin Franklin flew a kite in a thunderstorm, with the intent of proving that lightning was caused by a discharge of electricity (Some sources say he flew his kite on June 10).

  • “Global Wind Day”, a day for promoting wind, its power, and the possibilities it holds to change our world.

MOVIE STORIES

There’s an iconic shot in the original “Mission: Impossible” movie, where Tom Cruise gets lowered by cables and hovers just inches away from an alarmed floor.

It turns out, the shot took a very long time to perfect, because Tom’s balance would be off, and his face would hit the floor.

The solution was Tom asking the crew for POCKET CHANGE to put in his shoes, to even things out.  He tells the story in an extra on the 25th anniversary Blu-ray.  (Here’s the movie version of the theme to use while you discuss.

Tom also said when he finally got the shot, director Brian DePalma prolonged Tom’s agony by not yelling “cut” for a while.  “I was holding it, holding it, holding it.  I’m sweating and sweating.  And he just keeps rolling.  He started laughing and called cut.”)

Jack Palance ended up winning an Oscar for the part.  Here’s the star of the movie, Billy Crystal, telling the story why.  (Bronson said he never dies in movies.)

Did You Know Some of the Sounds in Nature Documentaries Are Fake?

A lot of the sounds you hear in nature documentaries don’t actually come from nature.  They come from a guy in a room making noises with random stuff.

It can be hard to capture natural sounds for various reasons.  Sometimes the camera is too far from the action.

Sometimes the subject being filmed is too small to make noises you can actually hear.  The guy who creates those sounds in a studio is called a foley artist.  And a profile on a foley artist named Richard Hinton shows some of those tricks . .

(Check out this montage of mushrooms growing [rubber innertubes rubbed together], a spider walking across a web [tapping 8mm tape wrapped around a reel], a spider shooting its web [a stretched-out Slinky shaken close to the mic], and a bear blinking its eyes [a piece of fur ruffled along with crumpling a wet chamois.)

(Check out the video here . . . and you’ll never watch a nature documentary again without questioning everything you hear.)

THOMAS RHETT’S LATEST HIT WAS PERSONAL PRIORITY CHECK

Thomas Rhett‘s latest single, “Country Again,” contains a message that he really needed to be reminded of at the time he wrote it. He tells us: [“You know, I think this song really is about my life, just slowing down and really trying to look at the priorities in my life and what they mean to me. And realizing that it’s okay just to stop for a second. It’s okay to live simple and to really just put your priorities at the top of your list – the ones that are most important to you. And for me, that’s becoming a better dad, a better husband, a better friend, a better son, a better brother, and really just kinda getting back to my roots a little bit and what all that entails.”]

Just seven weeks after its release, the song is already inside the Top 20 and climbing on the charts.

Thomas performed “Country Again” during Wednesday (June 9th) night’s CMT Music Awards in Nashville.
