➢ Vast tracts of land in Australia’s New South Wales state are being threatened by a mouse plague that the state government describes as “absolutely unprecedented.”
Just how many millions of rodents have infested the agricultural plains across the state is guesswork. At night, the floors of sheds vanish beneath carpets of scampering mice. Ceilings come alive with the sounds of scratching. One farmer estimates he drowned 7,500 mice in a single night last week with a trap he set with a cattle feeding bowl full of water. “We’re at a critical point now where if we don’t significantly reduce the number of mice we are facing an absolute economic and social crisis in rural and regional New South Wales,” Agriculture Minister Adam Marshall said this month.
➢ A high school principal surprised his graduating class with an a cappella rendition of “I Will Always Love You”. Here is Principal Marcus Gause belting out the tune.
➢ Michael Packard, the lobster diver from Cape Cod who we told you about yesterday that made headlines after he found himself in the mouth of a humpback whale but somehow ended up being spat out and swimming to safety, has cheated death before, it turns out.
In November 2001, he was onboard a flight in Costa Rica that crashed, killing 3 people. Packard managed to survive, sustaining severe facial injuries and multiple broken bones in his arms and legs. The lobsterman and 4 other passengers also survived 2 nights in the jungle before they were found by rescuers.
➢ Michael Douglas got mistaken for his 18-year-old daughter’s grandfather by other parents at her graduation. But he took it in stride. Quote, “I’m not gonna take it personal, I think they’re just trying to be nice.”

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

- Silly String was originally created in the 1970s when a chemist was trying to invent an instant spray-on cast.
- The budget for “Dazed and Confused”was $6.9 million . . . and about one-sixth of that went toward getting the rights to all the ’70s songs used in the movie.
- There have been 1,066 different final score combinations in NFL history. The most recent addition was the Cleveland Browns beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 48-to-37 on January 10th . . . there’d never been a 48-to-37 final score before.

PUPPY DOG EYES:
There is a scientific reason puppies steal your heart from the moment you first see them.
According to new research, puppies are pretty much born ready to interact with people. A team at the Arizona Animal Cognition Center evaluated 375 puppies that were all about 8 weeks old, for things like eye contact and following physical cues, such as pointing.
According to lead author Emily Bray: “Puppies will look at and return a person’s social gaze and successfully use information given by that person in a social context from a very young age.”
And that happens even before the pup has any extensive experience with people.
It is thought that how willing a puppy is to make and maintain eye contact is a good predictor of whether it will someday make a successful service dog.
