The American League won MLB’s All-Star game for the eighth year in a row last night (July 13th), beating the National League 5-2 at Coors Field in Denver.

The Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who hit a towering 468-foot home run in the third inning, won the MVP, becoming at age 22 the youngest MVP in All-Star history.

Summer is a time for thunderstorms, and a man in Springfield, Massachusetts nearly got struck by lightning, and captured the moment on camera. Bob Brandon said he had just gotten back to his home after work and was taking the trash bins up the driveway when a lightning bolt struck the bin he was pulling behind him. Brandon said it left two holes in the bin and shot back out towards the street. In the video, captured by his home security camera, he’s seen running immediately into his home for shelter. He added that he’s thankful he was not injured during the incident and feels very lucky.

If his latest Instagram post is to be believed, Hugh Jackman might be getting ready to sharpen his adamantium claws for another return as ‘Wolverine’. The Aussie star, who has played the mutant X-Men hero 10 times, sent Marvel fans into a tizzy when he posted a photo with Marvel boss Kevin Feige to his Instagram Stories, along with an image of Wolverine’s signature blades. SELL PHONES:
UK-based antiques website LoveAntiques.com has put together a list of the most valuable old-school mobile phones, showing that if you’ve got a “brick” hidden away in a junk drawer, you could be sitting on a minor goldmine.

At the top of the list is a rare pre-production prototype model of the very first iPhone – which hit stores in 2007. If you’re lucky enough to have one, it’s apparently worth a whopping US $13,900.

Other phones that could potentially be worth a fortune include more common models like old Motorolas and Nokias. What makes an old phone valuable? It has a lot to do with the software installed on the phone, the exact model, how rare the phone is and interestingly, whether or not it has “cult status”.

The prototype iPhone 1 has previously sold for as much as $41,700 because it has different software, and is therefore rare. Here is the rest of the top-5:

  1. Motorola 8000x – $1,100-$4,870

  2. Nokia 7700 – $1,390-$2,782

  3. Mobira Senator NMT- $1,100- $2,782

  4. IBM Simon Personal Communicator- $1,100-2,782

A Study Found Three Bad Nights of Sleep in a Row Is Rough, and Six Is Soul-Crushing

Most of us stay up too late sometimes, or get a bad night’s sleep.  But how many days in a row does it take before you fall apart?

Researchers looked into it, and found things go downhill pretty fast.  2,000 people tracked their sleep for over a week.  And even just one night of poor sleep had a huge effect on their mental and physical wellbeing.

“Poor sleep” meaning less than six hours a night. Things got worse if they didn’t sleep well for two nights in a row . . . and EVEN worse after three nights.  But then it leveled off for a few days.

In other words, some us can deal with three, four, or even five restless nights.  But that’s the limit.

And even after one bad night of sleep, people were more likely to feel lonely, angry, nervous, frustrated, and irritable.

GOOD NEWS

A British man who missed England’s semifinal win over Denmark in the Euro 2020 soccer tournament last week so he could donate stem cells was given tickets to  Sunday’s (July 11th) final.

For Sam Astley’s kindness, Euro 2020 sponsor Vivo gave him the tickets for the final, which England ended up losing to Italy on penalty kicks.

Astley said the chance to watch England in a semifinal would have been fantastic, but he quickly recognized that donating stem cells was “more important than any football game” and he never considered delaying the procedure.

DAMAGE TO THE STANLEY CUP

The Stanley Cup is in need of repairs, according to multiple reports, with the trophy being damaged during today’s celebration in Tampa.

For the second year in a row, the Lightning celebrated a championship with a boat parade, beer and champagne flowed which was presumably a contributing factor to the Cup receiving a big dent. A photo has surfaced showing Patrick Maroon holding the damaged trophy.

Ironically, the Stanley Cup will need to be sent to Montreal, where it’ll undergo repairs.

What exactly caused the damage to the Cup isn’t clear, though this has been a concern in the past. Philip Pritchard — the Stanley Cup’s pseudo-bodyguard told the Washington Capitals players to stop doing keg stands off the cup in 2018 due to the potential for damage.

The Cup has been beaten up before. In 1987, Mark Messier damaged it while partying at a nightclub after the Edmonton Oilers won the Cup.

After the Dallas Stars won the championship in 1999, Guy Carbonneau tried to throw it off a deck into a pool, but missed.

Babies have pooped in the Cup before. Dogs have eaten out of it.

It was thrown into a bonfire by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962. The New York Rangers had to pee on it in 1940 to put out a fire they started.

And in 1924, the Montreal Canadiens left it on the side of the road.

MAKING YOUR BLOOD RUN…OR DO SOMETHING ELSE:
For many of us, the past year has included a new fitness journey. With fitness clubs closed for much of the pandemic, we’ve been installing weight machines in our basements, running around the neighborhood, and buying fancy Peloton bikes. But which workout is best for YOU?

According to new research, a blood test just might tell you. Researchers at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center looked into how certain molecules in people’s blood might be related to how their bodies react to workouts. What they found is that certain proteins in our blood can predict our body’s response.

Basically, it can tell if someone who isn’t getting results from aerobic exercises like walking, cycling, or swimming, may fare better with higher intensity workouts or resistance training. The scientists say this could be welcome news for people who run for hours per week and never seem to experience the changes they’re after.

A VERY LONG LIFE:

While more adults are reaching 100 years-old every decade, far fewer make it to the milestone of 110. But a new study says that may soon change.

Researchers from the University of Washington say their estimates show human lifespans are about to push into uncharted territory. They predict that not only will someone break the record for being the oldest living human, it’s almost certain that “supercentenarians” will start living into their 120s this century. In fact, their complicated calculations determined that there is a 99% chance that someone will live to 122 years before 2100, and an 89% chance that someone will hit the age of 126. Currently, the record for the oldest human belongs to Jeanne Calment of France, who died at the age of 122 in 1997. Kane Tanaka of Japan is the oldest living person, at 118.
