On Today’s Show
July 16, 2021 9:35 am➢ A couple in Georgia found 18 snakes under their bed. They were just garter snakes, but still. (Here are the wife, Trish Wilcher, talking about it, along with the Phinizy Center for Water Sciences Environmental Educator Camilla Sherman.)
➢ The entire staff of a Burger King in Lincoln, Nebraska walked out, and they announced it on the restaurant’s marquee, saying, quote, “We all quit. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
The employees say it was justified, because they were overworked . . . understaffed . . . forced to work in a very hot kitchen without air conditioning . . . and corporate wouldn’t repair their broken equipment.
So when the general manager of this location put in her two weeks’ notice, it started a chain reaction until EVERYONE wanted out. Here are two employees explaining why they did it.
➢ This definitely isn’t in your Amazon driver’s job description. So somebody give this guy a raise: A woman in Texas was expecting a package the other day, and added a very specific request in the notes.
She said to leave it by her trashcan, not on her porch . . . because a giant SPIDER had been out there all day, and she was too terrified to use the front door. She also said that if he’d KILL the spider for her, even better. And the guy actually did it.
Her doorbell camera got it all on video, including a shot of the spider crawling on the lens. The Amazon guy showed up . . . found the spider on the wall . . . removed one of his shoes . . . and took it down. Now she wants to find out his name, so she can thank him.
➢ A book 300 years overdue was finally returned to the library at Sheffield Cathedral. The Rev. Canon Keith Farrow, explains that the 1704 printing of “The Faith and Practice of a Church of England Man”, arrived in the mail with a note of explanation.
➢ Some thieves apparently don’t consider all the evidence they might leave behind. The Daily Dot recently posted about a Doritos Locos Taco that went missing from a customer’s delivery order. TikTok user @katelyn8560 revealed in a video that she recently placed a Taco Bell delivery order, but when it arrived, one of her tacos was missing. But she says she also got a photo of the order from her DoorDash delivery driver confirming the delivery of the food, and the picture accidentally included two of the delivery driver’s fingers with what appeared to be orange smudges on them.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS
- The employees at Disney parks aren’t allowed to point with one finger, because it could be seen as a negative gesture by people from other countries. So they’ll always point with two fingers.
- Elephants only need two hours of sleep a day, which is the least of any mammal.
- A kicker won the NFL MVP award in 1982. Mark Moseleywon it as a member of the Washington Redskins. He made 20 out of 21 field goals that year, which is . . . good. It must’ve been a REALLY mediocre season though.
- Pinball machines were illegal in Oakland, California from the 1930s through 2014.

SAVE MONEY AT THE PUMPS:
With gas prices in some places double what they were 15 months ago, and no relief in sight, here are some tips to increase your gas mileage by up to 30% . . .
⇒ Check the air: Do it before you go anywhere. Low tire pressure can affect fuel economy, performance and handling, plus accelerate tire wear.
⇒ Remove your roof rack: At highway speeds, more than 50% of engine power goes to overcoming aerodynamic drag, so don’t carry unneeded items on the roof if you don’t have to.
⇒ Don’t speed: You knew that was coming. You’ll not only avoid getting a ticket, you’ll save money on fuel.
⇒ Drive smart: Using cruise control, limiting use of air conditioning, combining errands and avoiding idling can also help save fuel. So can simply driving smoothly. Accelerate moderately and anticipate the movement of traffic.
⇒ Buy gas during the week: Generally, it’s cheaper between Monday-Thursday in the evening. Many gas stations drop the price in the evening and during the work week, only to raise it back up in the morning and again once the weekend arrives.

GOOD NEWS
A Findlay, Ohio, pizzeria owner decided to show his appreciation for his employees and how hard they’ve been working during the pandemic by giving them a full day of sales.
Josh Elchert, the owner of Heavenly Pizza, held an Employee Appreciation Day on July 5th, when he gave all $6,300 in sales from the day, plus $1,200 in tips, directly to his workers.
Elchert posted on Facebook ahead of time about the day so that customers would know, and the pizzeria fulfilled 220 orders that day, more than double the usual of about 100 for a Monday, with big tips dropped too. Each employee ended up earning $78 per hour for their shift.

SOMETHING TO KEEP AN EYE ON:
Yes, during the pandemic, we’ve all had more “screen time”. But disturbingly, doctors say they have noticed that many children have experienced worsening vision during lockdown.
And in a study published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology, researchers in China found that children age 6-8 were 3 times more likely to have nearsightedness during the pandemic than they were in the previous 5 years. As a result, of course, more kids these days are needing glasses.
The American Optometric Association says these findings should be taken into consideration by educators who are considering hybrid remote learning programs. They say that “Increasing screen time is usually accompanied with a lack of outdoor time and more sedentary lifestyle.
The more time children are inside…using their electronic devices, the less natural light the eye is receiving to develop properly.”

- Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. has recalled five NEUTROGENA and AVEENO aerosol sunscreen products because they could have benzene in them.
Benzene is a human carcinogen that could potentially cause cancer depending on the level of exposure. The chemical was found in low levels in some samples of the products, and Johnson & Johnson has recalled them voluntarily.
- The Rock didn’t get to start his workout when he wanted to yesterday, because there was a hawk feastingon a copperhead snake right outside his door. He posted a video where he said, quote, “Wish me luck. If y’all don’t hear from me in a few hours, well, you know I got my ass kicked by a hawk.”
