Penny Oleksiak won Broze the 200-m freestyle in a personal best time of 1:54.70!

Oleksiak has won the most medals by any Canadian athlete at a Summer Games!

She now has 6 . Canada up to 9 medals in total.

U.S. gymnast Simone Biles had a shaky start to the 2020 Olympics, then had a sudden exit from the team event.  Now she has withdrawn from individual events.  Here are three of her comments, citing her mental health as the reason.  (The team ended up getting silver medals after she left.  Simone could be back for several other events, but she hasn’t confirmed that she will return.  From “NBC Nightly News” on Tuesday, July 27, 2021.)

It is one thing to win a medal at the Olympic games, but it’s another triumph altogether to win your ex back.

For Hayden Wilde, of New Zealand his childhood dreams become reality as he took the bronze medal in the men’s individual triathlon event in Tokyo.

But during his superhuman accomplishment, he also left his former school girlfriend truly regretting her decision to dump him all those years ago.

Crooks targeting a Houston restaurant didn’t realize the establishment was cashless, and ended up stealing electronics and lemonade.  Here’s Christopher Frydenlund, co-owner of Mico’s Hot Chicken, explaining what happened.

Jennifer Carpenter is set to return to “Dexter” in Showtime’s limited-series revival. Her character, serial killer Dexter Morgan’s sister ‘Deb’, was killed off in the 2013 series finale, which was pretty widely panned. The “Dexter” revival is set one decade after the finale, which is about how much real-life time has passed since then. The show ended with Dexter leaving Miami and exiling himself in Oregon following his sister’s death. Title star Michael C. Hall is also on board for the show’s return.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Hamburger Day”, honoring the world’s favorite sandwich, whose origins can be traced back as far as the Middle Ages. Reportedly, Louis Lassen, owner of Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut, sold the first hamburger and steak sandwich in the U.S. on this date in 1900. Today, close to 6 billion burgers are served annually by restaurants.

If You Couldn’t Win Gold, Would You Rather Win Silver or Bronze?

Jerry Seinfeld had a classic bit about the Olympics, and said he’d rather win bronze than silver . . . because silver would be a bummer, but bronze would feel like you won SOMETHING at least.

So do you agree with that?

Someone polled 2,500 people, and it turns out most of us DON’T agree.  Of the people who answered, 93% would rather win silver.  Only 7% said bronze.

If you grew up in the “participation trophy” era though, you might be the outlier.

People aged 18 to 25 were more than twice as likely than older people to say they’d rather win bronze.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

Married women were banned from watching the ancient Olympic games. The penalty was execution.

At the first modern Olympics in 1896, there weren’t any gold medals. Winners received a silver medal and an olive branch.

The 1912 games in Stockholm had an event for literature.

The winner of the first modern Olympic Marathon stopped at a tavern mid-race for a glass of wine.

Five Household Items You Might Be Using Wrong

Is it possible you’ve been using a common product WRONG your whole life?  Here are a few things you might not know about five common household items . . .

  1. Plungers.  Those red, bell-shaped ones are for sinks and tubs.  For toilets, you need the kind with a flange at the end that fits into the opening at the bottom of the bowl.  Or get one of those “bellows plungers” that look like an accordion.

  1. Stainless steel pans.  Most people don’t know you can season them like a skillet, so they’re easier to clean.  Just coat the inside with oil.  Then put it on medium-high heat for a few minutes . . . let it cool down . . . and dump the extra oil out.

  1. Phone chargers.  Leaving your phone plugged in all night is hard on the battery, because as soon as the power dips, it starts to “trickle charge.”  So it’s better to charge it during the day, and unplug it when it’s done.

  1. The drawer under your oven.  A lot of people assume it’s for storing pans.  But look close.  It might be a broiler or a warming drawer.

  1. Toilet paper rolls.  Should the paper go over or under?  Illustrations from an 1891 patentshow it going OVER THE TOP, not under.  So that was the original intention.

It’s also a little more sanitary, since the end you’ll be using is kept away from the bathroom wall.  That way your unwashed hands are less likely to touch the wall while reaching for more paper.

How Many Cups of Coffee Do You Drink in a Day?

How many cups of coffee do you drink on a normal workday?

A new poll found one or two cups is a pretty common answer.  But some of us are drinking a LOT more than that.

  1. One or two cups tied with 21% of the vote each.
  2. 11% of people said three cups.
  3. 6% said four.
  4. 3% said five.
  5. 2% said six cups.
  6. And another 2% drink at least SEVEN cups of coffee a day.

Around 1 in 3 people said they DON’T usually drink coffee.  That was actually the most common answer in the poll.

Today’s Kids Get Bored Outside After . . . Just 30 Minutes?

If you’re in your 20s, 30s, and 40s, you probably remember your parents telling you to shut down the video games and go play outside.

Now, you may be parents yourselves, and you’re having to work even harder to get YOUR kids out of their rooms, because it’s not JUST video games . . . these days there’s also Twitch, YouTube, TikTok, and other social media.

According to a new poll, the average parent thinks their child could only keep themselves entertained outside for 32 MINUTES before getting bored.

Technology gets a lot of the blame.  And we ALL might get too wrapped up in stuff like Netflix and our phones.  72% of parents admit their family as a whole doesn’t go outside enough . . . even though 63% say their kids seem happier after playing outside.

And some good ways to get your kids outside include:  Planning family outings . . . trading computer or TV time for outdoor play . . . walking the dog together . . . going on nature-oriented vacations . . . and sending them to summer camp.

Luke Bryan – says he’s going to send Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani a box full of gifts to celebrate their recent wedding … and they can expect them to be “funny, sarcastic” and “embarrassing.” He wasn’t invited to his friend’s wedding, as the couple kept things low-key and intimate, to avoid a celebrity circus. CARLY PEARCE ISN’T AFRAID TO SHOW HER ‘TRUE HEART’

Carly Pearce says that no matter how vulnerable her most personal songs might make her feel, it’s important for her to share them with the world. She explains: [“I feel like I’m pretty shy naturally, at my core. I would say very few people really know me.  But I think that I feel the most understood when I’m writing songs, and I feel really inspired when I’m telling a true story. I think that country music fans have shown me since day one that they want my true heart, which I think gives me the confidence to just go there. And I can always tell in a writing room, when I’m inspired it’s because it’s happened to me.  And I do think I’m a songwriter just as much as I’m a singer.”]

She was among the performers at Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater last night (Tuesday, July 27th) as part of the Country Music Association’s “CMA Summer Jam,” a brand new, two-night summer concert experience which will air on ABC later this summer. Carly was joined by Luke Bryan, Mickey Guyton, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Cole Swindell, Carrie UnderwoodLainey Wilson and Dwight YoakFAST FACTS

Carly will be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry on Tuesday (August 3rd).
