Canada 1  USA 0  (Soccer semi-final)

The only goal of the match came off the boot of Jessie Fleming of London, Ont., who converted a penalty kick in the 74th minute.

Canada will play Sweden in the gold-medal match, which goes Friday morning at 11 a.m. in Japan, 10 p.m. ET on Thursday in Canada.

There’s something to be said for perseverance after a major disappointment.  Canadian diver Pamela Ware scored a rare 0.0 score in the Olympic three-meter springboard semifinal on Saturday.  She was attempting the most difficult dive of the competition, but she bailed on it halfway through.  After the dive, she said, “I made a mistake . . . I’m not giving up.  I’ll be around [at the next Olympics] in three years.”

Sunday, two Olympic high jumpers battled to a TIE, and were headed for a jump-off.  But then, they made a joint decision to call it off, and just SHARE the gold medal.  Which, is apparently allowed in the rules. Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy and Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar shook on the shared victory plan, and excitedly embraced.  It was a pretty awesome moment.  (Here’s video.)

Kathy Griffin has lung cancer, and is undergoing surgery to have half of her left lung removed.  It’s Stage One, and her doctors are optimistic that she could be cancer-free if everything goes well with the surgery. When some people think of lung cancer they think of cigarettes.  But Kathy said she’s “never smoked.”

She does have a family history of cancer, for what that’s worth.  Four years ago, Kathy shaved her head in honor of her sister who was battling cancer.  Sadly, she’s since passed.  And she also lost a brother to cancer in 2014.

Hugh Jackman revealed that he’s undergoing a skin biopsy over a possible cancer scare, and that’s why he has a bandage on his nose.  In a video on social media, he said that his dermatologists saw something on his nose that was a little irregular, so they wanted to check it out.  But it sounds like it was just a precaution . . . and they’re hopeful it’s nothing.

SCIENCE NEWS

  1. Russia’s new science module docked with the Space Station.  Then out of nowhere, its thrusters fired.  So the whole station slowly started spinning out of control.

It spun 45 degrees before another set of thrusters spun it back, and NASA claims the crew was never in danger.  But at the end of his shift, the flight director in Houston tweeted, “Yeehaw!  That. Was. A. Day.”

  1. In other space news:  Astronomers detected light coming from BEHIND a black holefor the first time.  Which seems impossible, but the black hole was BENDING the light.  It’s something Einstein predicted, but it’s never been confirmed until now.

  1. In animal news:  A study found puppiesare born ready to interact with people.  We’ve been around them and breeding them for so long, it’s hardwired in.

  1. A geologist in Canada may have found the oldest animal fossilsever.  They’re from sea sponges that were alive 890 million years ago.  If they’re confirmed, that’s 350 million years older than the current record.

  1. The “Holy Grail” for clean energy is to come up with a batterythat can store lots of electricity for days, and do it cheaply.  Now a company in Massachusetts called Form Energy may have done it.  Their new battery can hold a charge for just over four days.

EATING FOODS HIGH IN FLAVONOIDS CAN KEEP YOUR MIND SHARP OVER TIME

Go ahead and eat those fruits and veggies—a new study finds that eating foods high in flavonoids can help lessen the risk of cognitive decline. Foods such as peppers, oranges, strawberries, and blueberries are known to be high in flavonoids, and study author Dr. Walter Willet, with Harvard University, explains that flavonoids are compounds that are filled with antioxidants—and are found in most fruits and vegetables.

The data shows that people who consumed 600 milligrams (which is about 0.02 ounces) of flavonoids every day had a 20 percent reduced risk of cognitive decline, as opposed to people who consumed just 150 milligrams each day.

The researcher add that in addition to eating these foods, it’s important to prioritize a well-balanced lifestyle, which should be full of physical exercise and free from smoking.

BRETT YOUNG AND WIFE WELCOME BABY GIRL

Congrats to Brett Young and his wife, Taylor, who welcomed their second child and second daughter, whom they named Rowan Marie Young, on July 21st. Brett just shared the news over the weekend on social media with a picture of little Rowan and a sweet letter to his new baby girl. Brett gets to spend a few more days at home with his growing family until he has to hit the road for a show in Salem, OR on Thursday (August 5th).

Luke Bryan Shared the Stage with Jason Aldean, Tyler Hubbard, and Morgan Wallen

The fans at LUKE BRYAN’s concert on Friday in Nashville got way more than they paid for.  About halfway through the show Luke brought Jason Aldean and Tyler Hubbard to the stage.  And then Jason did his own invite.

He told Luke that a really good friend was backstage, and out strolled Morgan Wallen.  The crowd went nuts, cheering for about a minute.  Luke celebrated that by inviting them to do a shot of tequila.  Invitation accepted.

Luke was a gracious host.  He let each of them perform on their own, and they all got together to jam on Jason’s “She’s Country”.

You may recall Morgan was an opener on Luke’s tour, but he canceled in April in the wake of the racial slur video.  So in his case, the audience got what they originally paid for.  The other two guys were pure bonus.

JAKE OWEN SUED OVER LATEST CHART-TOPPER

Jake Owen is being sued for allegedly stealing his latest Number One hit, “Made For You.” TMZ reports that Alexander Cardinale and Morgan Reid‘s lawsuit claims Jake’s version copies the lyrics and melody from their 2014 song with the same title.

In legal documents filed in Nashville, Cardinale and Reid claim the “notes, structure, harmony, vocal style and rhythm are clear indicators” that their song has been copied.

Their version was released on Cardinale’s album Digital Youth.

The song was also used in a Coca-Cola commercial.

MIRANDA LAMBERT EMOTIONAL

MIRANDA LAMBERT had a very emotional moment while performing “The House That Built Me” last weekend.  It was her first show since losing her dog Jessi, and the feelings were so strong she started crying and couldn’t sing.  Luckily, the audience knew the words and they sang it for her.  (Twitter)
