Canada’s Kelsey Mitchell became our final medal winner when she won Gold in the

women’s sprint event. She defeated the reigning world champion on the way to the finals, then won two straight races in a best-of-three showdown

Her win makes it 24 overall medals for Canada — seven gold, six silver, and 11 bronze — to close out the Tokyo Olympic Games. It’s a Canadian record for a non-boycotted summer Olympics.

Last Tuesday, a family was out on Lake Joseph in Ontario, Canada when their aluminum boat ran out of gas and they were stranded.  Even worse, the sun was setting.  So they started yelling for help, and flailing their arms.

There was a jet ski in the distance, and the driver spotted them.  Coincidentally, it turned out to be ROBERT HERJAVEC from “Shark Tank”.  At first, he thought they were just RABID FANS . . . but then he realized they were in trouble.

He immediately drove over, and towed their boat back to the shore.

Robert posted a video on Instagram, and said, quote, “Did my good deed for the day!”  The dad and his three kids were thrilled . . . and they thanked Robert for “not hesitating” to help them out.

Did you have that familiar, sinking feeling last night that MONDAY was right around the corner?  A new poll found close to one in four people feel that way MOST weeks.

11% of us dread Mondays EVERY single week, and another 12% said more often than not.  So that’s 23% total.

Not everyone hates Mondays though.  26% of Americans said they NEVER have a sinking feeling as their weekend draws to a close.  And another 24% don’t work or go to school right now.  So half of us couldn’t care less that it’s Monday.

Imagine fainting and waking up to a famous sitcom mom coming to your aid.  That happened to one hiker in Utah when she fainted and fractured her nose on a rock.

JULIE BOWEN from “Modern Family” and her sister . . . who is a doctor . . . happened to be in the same area.  They helped clean the hiker’s face and bandage her up . . . and they gave her electrolytes, a snack, and medicine.

They also helped contact her family, who had gone ahead.

The hiker said she recognized Julie’s voice, but wasn’t sure from where.  She actually didn’t recognize Julie until she introduced herself, because, quote, “I just hit my head.”

What Are the “Dog Days of Summer” . . . And How Many More Do We Have Left?

We’ve all heard the phrase “dog days of summer” . . . but what exactly are they?  Here’s a quick rundown . . .

  1. The name comes from the star Sirius.  Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, and it’s known as the “Dog Star.”  The term “dog days” comes from Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, who believed Sirius’ bright light radiated extra heat toward Earth, making summer days hotter.

  1. There’s been some debate about the exact timeframe, but according to “The Old Farmer’s Almanac”, the “dog days of summer” last from July 3rd to August 11th.  So we’ve got a couple of days left.

  1. An old proverb claims rain during dog days of summer is bad luck.  The thought among farmers was that a dry growing season in summer was better than a wet one.

  1. You might be at a greater risk of certain infections.  The same way that winter is known as “flu season,” a study in Maryland found that the dog days of summer might be “bacterial infection” season.

And another study in Finland found that the risk of an infection after a surgery was two times higher during the dog days of summer than at other times.

SCIENCE NEWS

  1. A study in Austria found that watching too many crime dramaslike “Law & Order” can skew your perspective on real crime stories.  Basically, we see things in shows and assume they reflect reality.  But sometimes they don’t.

  1. Scientists may have found an unlikely solution to the problem of plastic pollution — inside the stomachs of cows. Researchers in Austria found that common plastics can be broken down when exposed to rumen, the matter found in the largest part of a cow’s stomach. The microbes and enzymes found within rumen can break down common plastics — including those widely used for plastic bags, bottles, textiles and food packaging. They hope by replicating the enzymes responsible for the process, they can degrade some of the millions of metric tons of non-biodegradable plastic clogging up oceans, waterways and other parts of the environment.

  1. Ocean explorers found a real-life SpongeBob SquarePants.  They spotted a sea sponge in the Atlantic next to a pink starfish that looks like his friend Patrick.  But they’re not friends in real life.  They say the starfish was probably about to EAT the sponge.

  1. As if rising sea levels, drought, and more extreme weather events aren’t enough, climate change will also bring us longer mosquito seasons. That’s the conclusion of scientists who found the pesky insects adapt to changes in temperature more quickly than was previously believed. That means in regions poised to experience newly tropical temperatures in a warmer world, mosquitoes could become a year-round nuisance. In places that won’t heat up quite so much, the bugs may be able to reduce the amount of time they spend dormant due to chilly conditions, leaving us fending off mosquitoes for much longer each year than we’re used to.

HOMEBUYERS PAY MORE WHEN THEY SEE THESE PAINT COLORS

Sellers haven’t had a hard time selling homes lately, but a new survey from Zillow reveals you can get up to $5,000 more for your home if you paint your walls certain colors.

They found light blue is currently the most popular color for bathrooms, and participants said a light blue bathroom would be enough to justify a 1.6% higher offer price (about $5,000 on a $290,000 home). White walls in the kitchen increased interest in touring or purchasing a home, and buyers also liked light-yellow, off-white, dark gray, dark red, and dark green for kitchen colors.

When it comes to the living room, survey participants preferred grey, and also said they liked light green, white, dark gray, and light yellow as options. As far as bedrooms go, bright blue was the top pick, along with white, light blue, and dark gray.

Zillow notes, “On average, bright green and bright yellow living rooms decreased interest among surveyed buyers to tour a property. Both colors, on average, had a negative effect on prospective offer prices.”

REBA McENTIRE REVEALS SHE HAD COVID DESPITE BEING VACCINATED

During a TikTok live last week, Reba McEntire revealed that even though she and her boyfriend, actor Rex Linn, are both vaccinated, they were diagnosed with COVID-19. At the end of the livestream Reba told viewers, “You guys, please stay safe. Wear your mask. Do what you have to do. Stay home . . .” About the virus she said, “Rex and I got it and it’s not fun. You don’t feel good. We were both vaccinated and we still got it, so stay safe, stay home, and be protected the best you can.”

Last week, Reba and her family also announced they have postponed a scheduled memorial for her mother, Jacqueline Smith, because of the rise in COVID-19 cases in Oklahoma. The “Secrets” to Luke Bryan’s 14-Year Marriage

The latest People cover story reveals the “secrets” to LUKE BRYAN’s 14-year marriage to his wife Caroline.  Sure, it’s a fluff piece, but it really does feel like these two are in it for the long haul.  And isn’t that refreshing.

It includes quotes and clips from the upcoming IMDB-TV docuseries, “Luke Bryan: My Dirt Road Diary”.  So what are these secrets?  Well, Luke wants us to know they definitely have fun together.

Quote, “Our relationship, our household’s crazy.  There are some ‘opposites attract’ that goes on.  It makes us drive each other crazy but then it pulls us together.  In the grand scheme of things we just have a ball in life and have a ball with our kids.”

And if you only take away one piece of advice from this, here’s Caroline summing it all up.  Quote, “Each day whether we are blissfully happy or not, we fight FOR each other.  I’ll love Luke until my last breath.”

Trace Adkins Didn’t Want to Go to Blake and Gwen’s Wedding

It was pretty smart of BLAKE SHELTON and GWEN STEFANI to invite NO ONE to their wedding last month.  It was a smattering of close family and friends . . . plus CARSON DALY who officiated.

The Boot asked TRACE ADKINS if he knew the wedding was happening.

He said, quote, “Oh, yeah.  He told me.  I mean, he didn’t invite anybody to the wedding.  I probably wouldn’t want to come anyway, because I didn’t want to witness that woman throw her life away like that.  So, I didn’t wanna go, anyway.”

He was joking, of course.  They’ve been friends for a long time.

So, when Blake recently admitted to having “awkward conversations” with people who were not being invited . . . Trace was one of them.  Quote, “Yeah, I’m sure a lot of people had some choice words for him.  I did.”
