On Today’s Show
August 13, 2021 9:35 am➢ This guy in Ohio didn’t know doorbell cams were a thing. It took the homeowner over a minute to convince him otherwise.
(He was asking about a couple of free bikes sitting in the front yard.)
➢ This video has been racking up the hits on TikTok. It’s doorbell cam of a homeowner patiently listening to a neighbor complain about the Tigger flag flying in their front yard. Yes, Tigger from “Winnie-the-Pooh”.
She thinks it makes the whole neighborhood look tacky. She even throws a little shade on the home’s landscaping and backyard.
➢ A dishwasher hack has been making the rounds online. Has anyone tried this, and does it really work? A grandmother named Babs posts life hacks on TikTok. And she showed people an easy way to dry your dishes after running them in the dishwasher.
Just drape a dry, terrycloth dish towel over the door and close it. Then wait five minutes.
The towel is supposed to absorb all the moisture, so your dishes end up dry. But we’ve seen a few people online who claim it doesn’t actually do much.
Our guess is it MIGHT help them dry if you do it right after the wash cycle ends while it’s still steaming. But any pools of water would still be there. Other people pointed out that you can also just leave the door open a little without a towel, and that works too. (Here’s the video.)
➢ During last night’s “Field of Dreams” game in Iowa, the New York Yankees lost to the Chicago White Sox in a close game, 9 to 8. There were EIGHT home runs into the corn field, including three in the 9th.
Here’s Kevin Costner addressing the crowd before the much-anticipated “Field of Dreams” game between the White Sox and the Yankees. He had a question for everyone, even though it sounds like they don’t give the answer he expected.
TODAY IS……………….
- “Friday the 13th”, a bad day for those who suffer ‘triskaidekaphobia’ – fear of number 13, or ‘paraskevidekatriaphobia’ — fear of Friday the 13th. Every year has at least 1, but never more than 3.
- “International Lefthanders Day”, first celebrated in 1976 to salute that forgotten visible minority … lefties. Only about 10% of us are left-handed.
- “Kool-Aid Day”, the annual weekend celebration of the soft drink mix originally made in Hastings, Nebraska. Edwin E. Perkins first marketed the stuff in 1927 in 6 flavors (raspberry, cherry, grape, lemon, orange, and root-beer).

Happy Friday the 13th! Here’s How Five Common Superstitions Got Started
It’s Friday the 13th! Here’s how five common superstitions got started.
- Friday the 13th. Nobody knows for sure how it started, but one theory is that it has biblical origins and is tied to the number of guests at the Last Supper and Jesus’ crucifixion on Good Friday.
- Breaking a mirror. Ancient Romans believed that mirrors held a piece of your soul . . . and a separate myth said that our body “renews” itself every seven years. So those two things together helped create the “seven years of bad luck” thing.
- A black cat crossing your path. In the Middle Ages, black cats were associated with witchcraft and demons. And that snowballed into the idea that if a black cat crossed your path, they were blocking your connection to God and path to heaven.
- Knocking on wood. The idea here came from ancient civilizations that believed trees housed various spirits . . . and touching the tree would give you a protective blessing from those spirits.
- White lighters are bad luck. This has its roots in the 27 Club, where young musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobainall died at the age of 27. According to the superstition, they had white lighters on them when they died. But BIC disposable lighters weren’t even invented until 1973 . . . and Hendrix and Joplin died in 1970.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS
- “Where the Wild Things Are”was originally going to be called “Where the Wild Horses Are” . . . until Maurice Sendak realized he couldn’t draw horses.
- Ducks quack in different accents depending on where they’re from.
- Quentin Tarantino’sfirst job in Hollywood was as an Elvis impersonator on an episode of “The Golden Girls” in 1988.
- The longest year ever was 1972. It was a leap year, so it had an extra day, and it had two extra leap seconds.

The “Field of Dreams” Game Included Kevin Costner and Eight Home Runs
Iowa hosted their first-ever MLB game last night on a specially constructed field next to the real-life “Field of Dreams” movie set. The Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees 8 to 9 with a walk-off homer in the ninth.
There was a nostalgic opening ceremony, where KEVIN COSTNER led the players through the cornfield and onto the field.
Kevin said, quote, “Thirty years ago on the other side of that corn we filmed a movie that stood the test of time. Tonight, thanks to that enduring impact that that little movie had, it’s allowed us to come here again . . . Is this heaven?”
For an added old-school touch, both teams wore retro uniforms and even the scoreboard was changed . . . manually. José Abreu of the White Sox hit the first home run of the night into the cornfield. It was the first-ever Major League homer in Iowa.
Each team hit four home. For the Yankees, it was two from Aaron Judge, one from Brett Gardner, and one from Giancarlo Stanton.
For the White Sox it was one from José, one from Eloy Jiménez, one from Seby Zavala, and the game-winner from Tim Anderson.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said they’ll return for another game next year.
LUKE BRYAN PENNED SPECIAL SONG INSPIRED BY HIS BROTHER FOR DOCUSERIES
Luke Bryan co-wrote a very personal song inspired by his late brother, Chris, to coincide with his new five-part docuseries, Luke Bryan: My Dirt Road Diary. The song is called “Songs You Never Heard,” and as Luke tells us, these are the things he most wishes he could share with his brother. [“So since my brother passed away there’s been all of these life-changing songs that I knew my brother would have loved. That was the main thing so we wrote it with that and then as it started really working in conjunction with the documentary we decided to really feature the song and love how it turned out and it’s just a special song.”]
