On Today’s Show
August 17, 2021 9:35 am➢ A man got his car immersed in a huge sinkhole in Maryland this week, after plowing through barriers and plunging in. He was released from the hospital with minor injuries. Here is a WSSC Water employee and a local business owner talking about the incident.
➢ Ontario Provincial Police issued a warning after stopping a driver north of Toronto whose car was piled so high with empty beer cans that he (or she!) was literally unable to use the rear-view mirror. The vehicle was stopped in cottage country during a RIDE check, where officers specifically look for signs that someone was drinking before hitting the road. The signs were certainly there, filling the back of the Toyota from the floor nearly all the way up to the roof, but the driver wasn’t found to be impaired. They were charged for having an “insecure load” and for driving with a licence under suspension.
➢ Emergency responders in Florida said they were summoned to an unusual scene where an airborne turtle crashed through a driver’s windshield — and survived.
The fire district said the turtle had apparently been struck by a semi truck on the highway and sent flying into the other vehicle’s windshield. “Both driver and turtle were unharmed,” the fire district said. “The turtle was released safely.”
➢ A guy noticed his son had snuck out of the house, so he set a trap. When he returned, he triggered a Ring camera, which turned on some lights and played a message on a smart speaker.
➢ After last week’s game between the Yankees and the White Sox in Iowa, everybody’s talking about “Field of Dreams”. So it makes sense that this news would drop now . . .
A TV series based on the movie has been given the green light at NBC’s Peacock streaming service. Not much is known about it yet, except that it’s being developed by Mike Schur, the guy who created “The Good Place”.
His other credits include “Parks and Rec”, “The Office”, “SNL”, and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”. But “Field of Dreams” will be a drama, NOT a comedy.
TODAY IS……………….
- “Black Cat Appreciation Day”, an annual event encouraging the adoption of black and B&W cats. Like black dogs, they are usually the least popular choice at animal shelters.

We Finally Stop Worrying What Other People Think at Age 46
It’s amazing most of us go half our life stressing about this stuff: Someone asked 2,000 people aged 55 and up when they finally stopped worrying about what other people think of them. And the average is 46 years old.
They also asked about work, relationships, and looks. Here’s what people said . . .
- We finally feel okay about our appearance in our mid-30’s. For men, it’s 34. For women, 36.
- The average person feels settled in and okay about their relationship at 37.
- We don’t truly feel good about our career until we hit 40.
- In general, we feel comfortable in our own skin at age 42.
- We don’t feel like we can really speak our mind until our early-to-mid 40’s. For men, it’s 40. For women, 45.
- We finally start to relax about finances at age 50.
They also asked about life events that make your more confident. The top five are becoming a parent . . . getting married . . . retiring . . . traveling . . . and getting your driver’s license.

How Much Underwear Do You Pack for a One Week Vacation?
A woman went on Facebook recently, and said that her husband complained that she packed too much for trips . . . and she wanted to know what people thought was acceptable for seven days away.
She shared her own list, . . . seven tops, seven t-shirts, seven pants, seven shorts, 10 socks, 14 underwear, five pajamas, three swimming suits, a shower towel, a swim towel, a beach towel, a coat, four hoodies, shoes, sandals, flip-flips, toiletries, and more . . . for EACH person.
She admitted she prepares for all kinds of weather . . . and she didn’t say where they were going. Some people commented that there’s no need for so many pajamas and hoodies, while others said you could cut back on the pants and tops, especially if you were also tossing in a full supply of shorts and t-shirts.
But what about the underwear? 14 per person. On one hand, you never want to run out . . . but 14 seems like a lot for seven days. (How much underwear do YOU pack for one week?)

Matthew McConaughey Never Wears Deodorant, But He Still Smells Great
The hygiene habits of the stars seem to be in the spotlight these days. So how about MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY? The guy DOES shower frequently, but he NEVER wears deodorant or cologne. So . . . does he smell? The answer, apparently, is NO.
YVETTE NICOLE BROWN from “Community” worked with Matthew on the movie “Tropic Thunder” more than a decade ago, and she got a good whiff of him.
In a new interview she says, quote, “He does not have an odor. He smells like granola and good livin’. He has a sweet, sweet scent. That is just him, and it’s not musty or crazy.”
She added, quote, “He was very kind to me.” (Listen here.)
In an interview back in 2014, Matthew said, quote, “The women in my life, including my mother, have all said, ‘Hey, your natural smell smells one, like a man, and two, smells like you.'”

TUESDAY AUGUST 17TH
- Blue Jays and the Tigers both had the night off
Tennis star Naomi Osaka got emotional during a press conference after a reporter asked her about her supposed aversion to dealing with the press. She handled the question, but had to take a quick break from the press conference.
- Two iconic American actors are having birthdays. Robert De Niro is 78, and Sean Penn is 61. To celebrate, we found this amusing clip of De Niro talking about Sean at the 2009 Oscars. (From the “81st Annual Academy Awards” on Sunday, February 22, 2009.)
- A mom asked her two-year-old daughter what she would do if she got lost. Bet you can’t guess her answer. (She said, quote, “Find another mommy.”)
- Ever get contacted out of nowhere by a job recruiter? Comedian Glen Tickle has.
FIELD OF DREAMS
Thursday’s “Field of Dreams Game” had a dream ending for Chicago White Sox fans, and its Nielsen ratings were a dream for Fox. The walk-off win over the New York Yankees at a specially-constructed baseball diamond in Dyersville, Iowa was the most-watched regular season baseball game on any network in 16 years. The “Field of Dreams” game, based on the 1989 Kevin Costner movie, had a final scene fit for Hollywood. After the New York Yankees took the lead in the top of the 9th by scoring 4 runs on the Chicago closer, Tim Anderson (who recently admitted he has never watched the movie), hit a 2-run homer into the cornfield with one out in the 9th inning, ending the game in cinematic fashion.

(Wynonna) As an artist, it’s wonderful to be included in the family of Country, and as a believer I thank God for my gift, and as an American, it’s just wonderful to celebrate anything. (Naomi) Yeah. (Wynonna) You know, to show up and say thank you. (Naomi) That’s a good point right now. We need that, don’t we? (Wynonna) Mmm hmm.”]
A formal induction ceremony for the inductees will take place at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in the CMA Theater at a to-be-determined date.
