On Today’s Show

An Ohio family got some good news when waste management workers found a bag with $25,000 in cash, that they accidentally threw in the trash. They were cleaning out their Gramma’s house when she remembered that she had the money in an envelope that she had hidden in her freezer.   (Here is Operations Supervisor Gary Capan and a team member of Republic Services talking about finding the cash.)

A “baked bean bandit” is emptying cans of it all over a village of 3,000 in England.

They’ve been covering doorsteps, homes and cars with the contents of the bean cans, and police are asking anyone with information to spill the…well, you know.

Police also posted pics of the messy crime scenes. One shows 4 empty cans of Heinz beans discarded near a doorstep covered with little orange beans. Another shows a grey car with sauce dribbling down the driver’s window, leaving an unsightly orange smudge.

Several people have posted online about owl encounters in neighborhoods in New York. Many say it’s happening during their morning runs and evening walks. They say the birds are going for their heads. It happened to Margaret Boyse a couple weeks ago. “I just felt something massaging my scalp like two hands rubbing my scalp,” Boyse said. “So I ducked and turned around to see if there was a person near me and there wasn’t and the owl flew into a tree nearby.” She was not hurt. Wildlife officials tell us they are likely juvenile owls. They are still learning what real prey looks like, and may mistake us. The best bet is to avoid areas where owls might be present.

Last month was not only the hottest July on record, it was also the hottest month ever recorded on Earth, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The combined land and ocean-surface temperature in July was 0.93°C above the 20th-Century average. The Northern Hemisphere’s land temperature was 1.54°C above average in July, also the hottest ever recorded and toppling the last record, set in 2012. In a release, the agency said: “This new record adds to the disturbing and disruptive path that climate change has set for the globe.”

Jason Momoa said he cannot live without his kids’ stuffed animals . . . a piglet named Piggy Pig Spirit and a bison named Potato.  He said they sleep in bed with him when he’s away from his kids.

A Willy Wonka-Themed Hotel Room Will Include Lickable Wallpaper

A hotel in the U.K. will soon be offering stays in a Willy Wonka-themed room . . . with LICKABLE WALLPAPER.

This is happening at the Chocolate Box, which is a chocolate-themed hotel in Bournemouth.  It’s on the southern coast of England, a little over 100 miles southwest of London . . . if that means anything to you. In addition to the lickable wallpaper . . . in “a variety of fruity flavors,” I should add . . . there’s also a chocolate fountain with fruit and marshmallows for dipping, and bowls of candy that can be restocked at no extra charge. The room key even looks like a golden ticket.

Oh, and you can take a bath in chocolate if you want to.

It’s actually not that expensive to say there, either.  It’s about 277 bucks a night.  But chocolate baths are extra . . . about $208 per. And by the way . . . the lickable wallpaper IS changed in between guests.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1. Before the 1900s, men wore corsets.  They were popular for hunting and exercise, kind of like how weight lifters wear belts today.

  1. Statistically, you are most likely to die in January, least likely in August.
  2. Frankenstein is the name of the doctor who creates the monster, not the monster itself.

  1. India has a larger population than every country in the Western Hemisphere combined.

Woman Thought a Hissing Cobra Was in Her House . . . But It Was Just Her Electric Toothbrush

A woman in Singapore recently called animal control, because she thought there was a highly venomous SNAKE in her house.

She heard a HISS coming from a cabinet in her bedroom.  And she thought it was a hissing COBRA.

So animal control showed up in all their protective gear, expecting a snake to jump out when they opened it.

But it turned out it wasn’t a cobra . . . it was her ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH.

She keeps it in the same cupboard.  And they think some water got inside the part that vibrates.  So that’s why it turned on.  And it was making a slightly different noise that sounded more hissy than usual.

As soon as they turned it off and on, it went back to normal.  And she apologized for wasting their time.

PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEE CAPTURES ALLIGATOR IN MICHIGAN POND

When you think of Michigan you likely do not think of alligators but a guy who works for the Stanton Department of Public Works in Michigan, says he was observing sewage ponds in the southern part of the city when he saw a turtle walk into one—closely followed by an alligator. He alerted his boss and co-workers, and got his fishing rod to attempt an amateur capture.

He was able to hook the gator and bring it to shore, where he then captured it with a fishing net.

He said the animal got out of the net a few times and charged at him with its mouth open, but the gator was eventually wrangled into a cooler.

A Michigan Department of Natural Resources officer took custody of the reptile and transported it to the Wilderness Trails Zoo.

The gator’s origins are unknown.

Bear opens 8 car doors in Colorado town in 1 night: ‘Lock all your windows and doors’

Officials in Colorado issued a warning on Twitter reminding people to lock their doors and windows (both for their cars and homes). This came after a bear apparently went door-to-door and opened multiple car doors in one night.

While the bear wasn’t caught in the act, a wildlife official found eight cars with their doors wide open and signs of rummaging. All of the vehicles were unlocked.

Is it time to get rid of homework? Mental health experts weigh in.

It’s no secret that kids hate homework. And as students struggle with an ongoing pandemic that has had a wide-range of mental health impacts, is it time schools start listening to their pleas over workloads?

Some teachers are turning to social media to take a stand against homework.

Tiktok user @misguided.teacher says he doesn’t assign it because the “whole premise of homework is flawed.” For starters, he says he can’t grade work on “even playing fields” when students’ home environments can be vastly different. Even students who go home to a peaceful house, do they really want to spend their time on busy work?

Because typically that’s what a lot of homework is, it’s busy work,” he says in the video that has garnered 1.6 million likes.

Mental health experts agree heavy work loads have the potential do more harm than good for students, especially when taking into account the impacts of the pandemic.

But they also say the answer may not be to eliminate homework altogether.

Sam Hunt Has Pleaded Guilty to His DUI Arrest in 2019

SAM HUNT pleaded guilty yesterday to misdemeanor charges on his “driving under the influence” arrest in 2019.  He’s losing his license for a year, and his car will have an interlock installed until he gets it back.  He’ll also do an alcohol safety course.

There’s more:  He’s going to serve 48 hours at an “alternative sentencing facility” called DUI Education Centers.

People called police in the wee hours of November 21, 2019 to report a car going the wrong way on the city’s Ellington Parkway. After being pulled over, Sam admitted to drinking alcohol and failed a field sobriety test issued by officers. Sam’s blood alcohol level was 0.173, well over the legal limit of 0.08.

Lainey Wilson Thought Her First Standing Ovation Was the Crowd Leaving

It must be a blast when a singer’s career is finally kicking into gear after years of nobody giving a hoot.  LAINEY WILSON is at that stage, especially since “Things a Man Oughta Know” cracked the Top 10.

She was asked how that song has changed things.  Quote, “I was telling someone the first standing ovation I ever got, I thought people were getting up to leave.  I’ve seen little girls singing every word, I’ve seen women, I’ve seen old men singing.

“It’s across the board . . . people are just latching onto this song and it’s so much fun to watch.  I tell you, going from Number 12 to the Top 10, I can even see a difference, I can see a big jump of the amount of people who know the song.”

Lainey is on Jason Aldean’s tour, along with Hardy, and that’s been an eye-opener.  Quote, “It’s the biggest tour I’ve ever done.  [I’m] soaking it up.  I love watching how those two interact with the crowd and the fans.  They make sure that nobody out there feels alone.”
