On Today’s Show

➢  Well, this is something you don’t hear about every day . . . a guy standing on the top of an Escalade while going 85 mph down a Detroit highway.  He was joyriding and wearing chains, so he couldn’t fall off.  (Here’s Lonnie Webster, a guy that saw it happen.)

rookie cop in Washington named Taylor Brandt is being honored.  Because in her first year on the job, she’s already saved NINE lives.  She specializes in “Tactical Emergency” care.  So she’s kind of like a cop-slash-EMT.  Two weeks into her field training, she saved a guy who’d been shot multiple times.  And she’s saved eight more people since then.

Here is the Commander of MPD Academy training, Ralph Ennis, and rookie officer Taylor Brandt talking about her amazing feat.

Spirit Airlines started charging people for carry-ons in 2010.  Now airlines charge for EVERYTHING, and other airlines have followed suit.  So could the same thing happen with HOTELS next?  Well, it’s already started.

“The Wall Street Journal” just did a big story on a company called MCR Development that owns over 100 large hotels.  They’re the fourth-largest hotel operator in the U.S., and they’ve been testing out the à la carte business model.

Around a dozen of their hotels now charge $25 to use the pool . . . $20 to check in early . . . another $20 to check out late . . . and an additional fee to use the gym.  They claim it’s going to allow them to offer rooms at slightly cheaper rates.

Heidi Klum was on “The Tonight Show” the other night, where she defended her fried spaghetti recipe.  Apparently this is a common way to make spaghetti in Germany: fry the noodles, add an egg, and top it with ketchup.  (From “The Tonight Show” on Wednesday, August 18, 2021.)

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Lemonade Day”, honoring the old-fashioned Summer refreshment favorite. Many sources say that lemonade was invented in Paris on this day in 1630.

  • “Kool-Aid Days” begin, the annual weekend celebration of the soft drink mix originally made in Hastings, Nebraska. Edwin E. Perkins first marketed the stuff in 1927 in 6 flavors (raspberry, cherry, grape, lemon, orange, and root-beer).

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1. The folds in chefs’ hats can signify their level of experience.  The origins of that date back to when a chef would have 100 pleats in his hat, which would signify the 100 ways he knew how to prepare eggs.

  1. The world record for the longest wedding veil is nearly 23,000 feet, which is the same length as about 63.5 football fields.

  1. All button mushrooms used to be brown until 1926, when a mushroom farmer in Pennsylvania found a cluster of white buttons growing in his beds.  He cloned them and began selling them as a new variety.

  1. Popeyes Chicken is named after Gene Hackman’s character Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in “The French Connection”, not after the cartoon character Popeye.

Six Questions to Ask Before You Get Married

When you’re dating someone, thinking about marriage is a LOT.  You’re about to combine lives, and families, and bank accounts.  So there are a million things to worry about.

Here are a few questions you should ask your partner BEFORE you get married . . .

  1. “How should we handle money?”  Are we going to get a joint bank account?  Who’s going to put the bills in their name?  How much debt do you have and what’s our plan to get out of debt?  All important decisions.

  1. “How should we divide the chores?”  50/50 seems best unless one person works a lot more.  Then the person who’s not working as much might offer to pick up the slack.

  1. “How are we going to handle disagreements?”  Try pretend fighting, and see how it goes.  If it turns into a REAL fight, that’s a big clue you have issues to work out first.

  1. “Are you open to couples therapy if we need it?”  Being able to communicate what you are and aren’t comfortable with is important.

  1. “Where will we spend the holidays?”  Will you do Thanksgiving with one family, and Christmas at another?  Again, it’s best to plan way ahead.  Traditions are hard to break, and people get sensitive about the holidays.

  1. “Do you want kids?  And how will we parent?”  Just make sure you’re both on the same page, because it’s one of the MOST important things to talk about.

Here’s Why Quentin Tarantino Has Never Given His Mother a Penny

QUENTIN TARANTINO knows how to hold a grudge . . . even against his own MOTHER.  Quentin has given her almost NOTHING since he got rich, because she once mocked him for trying to become a writer.

In a recent interview, he said she was cussing him out for not doing well in school because he was trying to write screenplays instead.

She told him that when he was supposed to be doing school work, he needed to ditch his, quote, “little writing career” . . . and she used finger quotes for that phrase.

At that moment, Quentin vowed that if he ever became a success, she wouldn’t see a penny from it.  Quote, “There will be no house for you.  There’s no vacation for you; no Elvis Cadillac for mommy.  You get nothing because you said that.”

Quentin did help his mother out of a jam with the IRS once, but that’s it.

The interviewer suggested that maybe he DID owe her something, because her taunting fueled his drive to succeed.

But Quentin said, quote, “There are consequences for your words as you deal with your children!  Remember:  There are consequences for your sarcastic tone about what’s meaningful to them.”

Quentin Tarantino’s Mom Won’t Throw Her Son Under the Bus

QUENTIN TARANTINO recently revealed that he’s basically never given his mother anything . . . because when he was a kid, she whizzed all over his Hollywood dreams.

You’d think that would make a person bitter.  But Quentin’s mom Connie Zastoupil took the HIGH ROAD when someone asked her to comment.

She said, quote, “I support him, I’m proud of him and love him and his growing new family.  It gave me great joy to dance at his wedding and receive his news upon the birth of my Grandson Leo.”

She added that she didn’t want to, quote, “participate in this salacious transactional media frenzy.”

Most People Are Uncomfortable Sitting Anywhere But Their “Assigned Spot” at Home

Do the people in your household settle into the exact same spots when you’re at the kitchen table?  Watching TV?  Or just lounging around?

In a new survey, 66% say they do have unofficial, “assigned” seating in their homes.  And most of those people say they’re very passionate about their “spot.”  In fact, 55% would feel “uncomfortable” sitting anywhere else.

A lot of that is probably just routine, but 63% say they actually associate “positive memories” with particular areas or pieces of furniture.

These numbers are backed up by another recent poll, where 63% of people said that when they eat dinner at home, they generally sit in the same place.

FRIDAY AUGUST 20TH

Rick Nicholls has been removed from the Ontario Progressive Conservative caucus after he announced that he will not get the COVID-19 vaccine as required by the party.

The Chatham-Kent-Leamington MPP announced his vaccine status Thursday afternoon from Queen’s Park.

At around 6 p.m., Premier Doug Ford issued a statement confirming Nicholls’ departure.

“MPP Rick Nicholls has failed to provide a legitimate reason for exemption from vaccination,” a release from the Premier read. “As a consequence, he is no longer a sitting member of the PC caucus and will not be permitted to seek re-election as a PC candidate.”

  1.   A Doctor who specializes in pelvic floor muscles is going viral, because she told women not to pee in the shower.  Over time, it can weaken the muscles that prevent leakage.  And it also makes you associate peeing with running water.  So you can end up feeling the urge to go when you wash your hands or fill up a glass of water.

  1.   Jimmy read a new batch of thank-you notes last night.  (From “The Tonight Show” on Thursday, August 19, 2021.)

  1.   Tig Notaro’s new comedy special on HBO Max is called “Tig Notaro: Drawn“, because it’s a completely animated version of her stand up act.  The cartoon accents make the show even more fun.  Here she is talking about the Kool-Aid Man.  (Don’t be surprised if you hear some sound effects.)

The ACMs Are Moving to Amazon Prime . . . Are Bad Ratings to Blame?

This is pretty big news.  The ACMs are moving to Amazon Prime, and it may be because none of the traditional networks were interested.  CBS had been airing it since 1998, but viewership has been dropping dramatically.

And then CBS rejected next year’s asking price of $22 million.  They didn’t even make a counter-offer.  So, the “57th Academy of Country Music Awards” will be the first major awards show to be livestreamed exclusively.  No word when it’ll air.

Here’s the ACM spin:  Quote, “This historic partnership meets the industry’s need to bring awards shows to the forefront of the streaming world . . . exactly where fans are consuming and demanding content.”

(Whether this was the long-term plan or not, it’s the right move for the ACMs.  Streaming is the future so might as well take the leap now.  And they won’t have to sweat the ratings as much as they used to.)

KANE BROWN RELEASES NEW SINGLE, VIDEO

Kane Brown has released a brand new single and video today called “One Mississippi.” It will be featured on his upcoming project.

The song was co-written by an artist named Levon Gray who Kane tells us he discovered on social media. He explains: [“I found a guy from Alabama tagged me and a story on Instagram, and he was a great singer, and really good. It was a really good song that he was singing that he wrote, so I asked him to come up to Nashville and write a song with me to see if we could get something to sign into my publishing company. His year during the COVID has been rough. He lost his mom and it was just sad so I was excited to kind of give him a chance, and he came to Nashville with the title called ‘One Mississippi,’ and he’s batting 1000 for the first time we wrote. It’s his first single, so thank you Levon Gray.”]

Kane is set to kick off his Blessed & Free Tour on October 1st in Sacramento, CA.

Watch Chris Young Stuff $1,000 Into the Tip Jar of Two Struggling Musicians

Bartenders and servers are the best tippers, right?  They know what it’s like to work a long shift and come up short. Is it the same for musicians?  They’re sitting on a stool somewhere playing song after song hoping you’ll stuff a dollar into the jar.

Well, CHRIS YOUNG remembers those days and he recently paid it forward.  He got together with a TikTok influencer named Lexy Lately.  She asks her followers for contributions, and then puts that money in the tip jar of struggling musicians.

They went to a downtown Nashville venue where two guys were playing music . . . and proceeded to make their day.  Lexy gave them $1,000, and then she introduced Chris, and he matched it with another $1,000.

The audience got a treat too.  Chris borrowed one of the musician’s guitars and launched into “Famous Friends”.  (Watch it all on Chris’s TikTok.)
