On Today’s Show

A theater near London that’s been closed for the pandemic is finally set to re-open this month.  And the first production they’re doing is “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”.

So producers decided to order a bunch of Dr. Frank-N-Furter wigs to sell as merch.  He’s the main character that Tim Curry plays in the movie.

But when the box arrived, they opened it up.  And instead of wigs . . . they got hundreds of HOT DOGS.  It turns out they use the same supplier to order lots of stuff, including food.  And whoever handled their order saw the name “Frank-N-Furter” and thought it meant FRANKFURTERS.

They got 52 CANS of hot dogs with eight per can.  So 416 hot dogs total.

They’re working with several food banks to make sure they don’t go to waste.

A new study at the University of Michigan found that every hot dog you eat shortens your “healthy life” by an average of 36 MINUTES.

By “healthy life,” they mean the years where you’re fairly healthy in general and aren’t dealing with chronic illnesses or disabilities.

They looked at over 5,000 different foods and came up with a number for each one.

For example, burgers and macaroni-and-cheese both shorten your healthy life by about five minutes.  But the good news is you can also ADD time.

Opting for a handful of cashews can extend your healthy years by 26 minutes.

Other things that do it include fruits, vegetables, and seafood.  And this one’s surprising . . . but peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches can also add time.

You have to hear Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds talk about how he gave the ball from his first Major League hit to his dog.

A family in Warwickshire, England got a surprise the other day, when TOM CRUISE landed his helicopter in their backyard.

The family actually got a call saying that an unnamed “VIP” was running late for a meeting and needed to land there, because nearby Coventry Airport was temporarily shut down.

They were pretty shocked when Tom stepped out of the chopper.  Alison Webb says he went straight for her kids and started talking to them, then offered them a RIDE.  So they actually went up in the helicopter while Tom was at his meeting.

Alison says, quote, “It turned out to be an incredible day.  It was surreal, I still now can’t believe it happened.”

COUNTRY MUSIC NOTE

Charlie Daniels‘ “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” topped country and rock charts in 1979.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1. There’s a 60-mile stretch of Interstate 19 in Arizona where all the signs only use kilometers, not miles.  It’s a relic from the Carter administration, when they were trying to get the U.S. to switch to the metric system.  There’s still no plan to change them.

  1. In real life, gun silencers don’t work like they do in movies.  A gun with a silencer still makes a noise about as loud as a police siren . . . that’s about 100 times quieter than a gun WITHOUT a silencer, but still pretty loud.

  1. You’re about 0.2 inches taller in the morning than at night, because the discs in your spine have been relaxing all night.  Over the course of the day, they squash down a little bit.

  1. The most lopsided game in college football history was in 1916 . . . Georgia Tech won 222-to-zero over a school from Tennessee called Cumberland College.

Man Stole a Full-Size Horse, and Tried to Hide It in . . . a Bedroom?

One problem with stealing ANIMALS is that they’re really hard to keep under wraps if anyone comes looking for them.  Especially one that’s five times the size of YOU.

A man named Garry Coble Jr. from Oconee County, South Carolina . . . in the western part of the state . . . stole a horse last Monday.

A witness saw him riding it, and then taking it INSIDE a house, which definitely seems like it would raise an eyebrow. The witness called police, and when the deputies arrived, they saw horse feces in the living room.

The deputies went through the house, and they found a full size quarter horse standing in the middle of the bedroom.  The horse was fine, aside from a cut on its left leg.  Apparently its name is Jubilee.

Garry was charged with larceny of livestock . . . and he was already wanted on some other charges, including one for throwing a mandolin into a pasture.

A Guy Gets Sprayed by a Skunk While Hiding from the Cops

You’ve gotta feel for the cops here.  Because they had to wrestle this guy to the ground, and then be in a CAR with him. 37-year-old Michael Ring was out causing trouble in Madison, Wisconsin.

Witnesses said he was out of control, obviously high on drugs, and had a KNIFE.  So it was a pretty serious situation. When cops showed up, he ran off and hid from them.  And he did get away for a minute, but they found him nearby.

And when they finally caught up with him, they got a whiff of something awful.  Because it turned out that while he was hiding . . . he got sprayed by a SKUNK.

He wasn’t actually hiding when they found him . . . he was in the middle of slashing a random person’s tires.  So maybe he was angry about the skunk, or just hates tires.

He resisted, but they got him into custody.  And he also had an outstanding warrant.

SEARCHING FOR SAVINGS:
Lots of employers are welcoming their workers back to the office these days, but at the same time, many people who have been working remotely for the past 17 month are wishing they could continue working from home. The good news?

Some employers are happy to accommodate them.  The bad news? It’ll cost you – at least if you work for Google. Google has rolled out a new internal calculator to explain potential pay cuts to employees who choose to continue working from home.

Reportedly, those who previously commuted an hour to the company’s offices in Manhattan would see their salaries slashed by 15% if they continue to telecommute.

Others with shorter commutes would see their pay cut by 5 or 10%, and those with relatively brief commutes wouldn’t see their wages affected at all.

Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have all warned employees who plan to leave expensive cities like New York and San Francisco to permanently work remotely from further afield, that their pay will be slashed.

A Google spokesperson said: “Our compensation packages have always been determined by location, and we always pay at the top of the local market based on where an employee works from.”

BRETT YOUNG EXPANDS CALIVILLE LINE, RELEASES CHILDREN’S BOOK

Brett Young is adding to his Caliville clothing line, which he launched in 2019. The line is carried exclusively at Kohl’s, and as Brett tells us, it is going to take up a little more space in the department store. [“We’ve expanded the line from just doing like graphic T-shirts to doing print or solid T-shirts, and we’re starting to have the conversation about doing women’s and children’s and swimwear, and that whole thing, so it’s growing. It did very well during the pandemic, which was exciting. I think because it kind of speaks to the everyday man and woman, it’s not super out there, and so hopefully that keeps growing and it’s been a fun little project for me.”]

Brett’s latest non-music project is his first children’s book, Love You, Little Lady, which was released yesterday (Tuesday, August 24th). To celebrate, Brett Young has teamed up with lifestyle brand Vera Bradley and Tommy Nelson Books to launch the “Love, You Little Lady Baby Shower Bundle Sweepstakes.” From now through September 1st, fans can enter on Vera Bradley’s official Facebook and Instagram to win a deluxe “Little Lady” prize pack for the mom and baby in their life. The grand prize winner will receive a mom and baby bundle with a retail valued at more than $2,100.

The book was inspired by the lyrics of his gold-selling Number One hit, “Lady.”

Dolly Parton has been named to Forbes magazine’s America’s Richest Self-Made Women’s 2021 edition. She is the only musician to be added to the list this year with a reported net worth of $350 million.

The publication writes, “In a year when most of the music industry slowed down, the country singer and co-owner of amusement park Dollywood was busier than ever: She wrote a song inspired by her experience during the pandemic, released her first holiday album in 30 years and starred in a Netflix film, Christmas on the Square. Arguably her most important contribution: a $1 million donation that helped fund Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine research.”

The only other celebrity on this year’s Self-Made Women list is supermodel Cindy Crawford.
