On Today’s Show

The global shipping crisis, which has seen snarled supply chains and shutdowns in the pandemic, is getting worse. The Delta variant is sparking more critical port closures, such as the shutdown of a facility in China that’s the world’s 3rd-busiest container port.

Complications like this have a ripple effect on jammed warehouses and stretched road and rail capacity. They also increase shipping prices. Ultimately, the situation means shoppers will face higher prices and possible shipping disruptions going into the holiday season.

Coffee drinkers may be in for a rude awakening as production costs have hit a seven-year-high. Bad weather has hit supplies from Brazil, the worlds largest producer, protests in Columbia have disrupted shipments, and a shortage of shipping containers in South East Asia is also causing delays. Experts predict that supermarket prices are the most likely to increase.

There’s a huge difference between a roaring lion in captivity, and one that could actually kill you.  A worker at a South African game reserve was in a building, when a lion outside saw him and roared like he meant it.

According to the write-up, the lion was only guarding his mate.  But still.

A mom did the “stranger danger” test with her young daughter.  As in, what would she say if a stranger offered her candy.  Mom didn’t get the response she was hoping for.  (The girl told her she’d say, “Thank you.”)

Kelly Clarkson was on “The Tonight Show” recently, and found out skateboard legend Tony Hawk uses “Since You’ve Been Gone” as his hype song before skating.

Kids Are Pranking Their Parents in Scholarship Videos by Lying About How Hard Their Life Was

Another TikTok trend is going viral.  And thankfully, this one doesn’t involve hurting yourself . . . unless your mom slaps you upside the head.

Teenagers are pranking their parents by having them sit in on video applications for FAKE college scholarships . . . and then LYING about how hard their life has been.

The typical video goes something like this:  They start by saying their mom or dad is the person who’s inspired them the most.  And the parents always look proud at that point.

Then they say they’ve had a really hard life, but their parent’s life has been even harder.  And that’s when they say something like, “When my dad was younger, he went to PRISON for several years.” The goal is to see how long they can keep telling lies before their parent stops them.  Some shut it down right away.  Others sit there looking shocked, and wait for it to end before they start yelling.

One girl who’s going viral got her mom to do it, and claimed she used to be a HOOKER.  The mom immediately cracked up and couldn’t stop laughing.

You can find them on TikTok by using the hashtag “ScholarshipPrank.”

More Myths People Still Believe

Myth #1:  Goldfish have a three-second memory.  Studies have shown they can actually remember things for months.

Myth #2:  The color red sends bulls into a rage.  Bulls can’t even see red.  The capes matadors use are traditionally red just to hide the bloodstains.

Myth #3:  You should pee on a jellyfish sting.  It can actually make your sting WORSE.  Vinegar or rubbing alcohol might help though.

Myth #4:  You’ll get cramps if you go swimming less than 30 minutes after you eat.  The Mayo Clinic says there’s no science behind that one.  But it didn’t come from nowhere.

Doctors used to think a lot of blood had to be diverted to your gut to help with digestion, so you might get tired really fast and drown.  But now we know it’s not something to worry about.

Myth #5:  Swallowed gum stays in your gut for 7 years:  Yes, the digestive system has problems breaking gum down. But although gum can stick around for a week or so, it’s eventually going to be disposed of.

Myth #6: :  We only have 5 senses:  No one is actually sure how many we have. John M. Henshaw, a mechanical engineering professor who wrote “A Tour of the Senses: How Your Brain Interprets the World”, thinks we have 9: the original 5, plus balance, temperature, proprioception (body awareness), and pain.

LONG WEEKEND EVERY WEEKEND:

The largest-ever trial of the 4-day work week has been an “overwhelming success” and should be implemented, according to experts. The test, which took place in Iceland, involved about 1% of the country’s 350,000 people.

It saw people working about 35-36 hours per week, spread over 4 days, with no reduction in pay. The results of the pilot, which ran between 2015-19, were then analyzed by research teams from both Iceland and the UK.

They discovered that the more than 2,500 people who took part saw their productivity – and wellbeing — increase. As a result, Icelandic workers’ unions have already started to negotiate for fewer working hours.

A Talent Show Judge Once Told Keith Urban He Wasn’t Good Enough

KEITH URBAN posted a video of himself getting terrible advice from a judge on an Australian talent show in 1983 . . . when he was 16 years old.

You see him on the show, but his song “Wild Hearts” is dubbed over it.  Then the clip cuts to a live shot of the judge saying Keith should be in a group because he’s not strong enough to go solo.  Then the clip goes to black, and you hear “today’s Keith” say, quote, “Sometimes you just gotta prove ’em wrong.”  That’s followed by a string of concert clips with “solo Keith” showing that judge how wrong he was.

One more thing:  If you saw Keith and a virtual PINK perform “One Too Many” on Friday’s Today Show, you probably noticed a red spot in the corner of his right eye.  He hit up Twitter on Friday to explain that it’s subconjunctival hemorrhage.

(A subconjunctival hemorrhage is usually harmless and goes away after a week or two.)

Here’s Keith Urban and Pink performing “One Too Many” on Friday’s “Today Show”.
