On Today’s Show

NORM MACDONALD died yesterday after a nine-year battle with cancer.  He was 61.  Norm kept his cancer diagnosis a secret from almost everyone.  A friend said, quote, “He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him.”

Norm got his break in Hollywood writing for “Roseanne” and “The Dennis Miller Show” in 1992.  He joined “Saturday Night Live” a year later, and hosted its “Weekend Update” segment for three seasons. He had his own sitcom called “Norm” for 3 seasons and appeared in several movies. The best way to remember Norm would be by playing some of his most creative stand up comedy.  Here’s a great example.  How people used to take pictures a long time ago.

The United States Postal Service is investigating a mail carrier in Maryland after being caught on camera throwing mail out of the side of the truck onto a homeowner’s front lawn.  Here’s neighbor Ali Moran talking about the bizarre situation.

(She says UPS, but it is a regular U.S. postal vehicle.)

Sometimes things go wrong and you end up in a better place than you started. A California Chevrolet dealership let a customer trade in his 2021 C8 Corvette for a new 2022 model after a mechanic was caught driving his car 148 miles per hour in a street race earlier this month.

The 2021 car was dropped off to have a spark plug fixed, a routine affair, but the mechanic got caught racing the car due to the vehicles Performance Data Recorder (PDR) valet mode, which recorded the joyride on video.

To make up for his employee’s mistake, the owner of the dealership offered the car’s owner an upgrade to a 2022 Corvette—taxes included.

A flight attendant shared the “five things you should never do on an airplane.”  (Some of his examples:  “Never touch the flush button with your bare hand.  Use a tissue or napkin.”  Also, “Don’t wear shorts.  It’s unsanitary.”  “Do NOT be afraid to let your flight attendant know if you feel sick.  We are there to help.”)

Billy Bob Thornton has joined the cast of the “Yellowstone” prequel series “1883,” taking on a guest starring role in the Paramount+ drama. He’ll play ‘Marshal Jim Courtright’, joining previously announced regulars Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. The prequel centers on an earlier generation of the Dutton family “as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America,” according to the series description. 1883 will debut on Paramount+ on Dec. 19.

COUNTRY MUSIC NOTE

Garth Brooks‘ “More Than A Memory” became the first song to debut at Number One on Billboard‘s country singles chart in 2007.

“Wise” Sayings That Are Actually Dumb

A lot of the sayings people repeat to each other SOUND smart.  But how smart are they really?  Someone put together a list of “wise” sayings that are actually dumb.  Here are a few highlights . . .

  1. “Flattery will get you nowhere.”  It’s actually pretty effective sometimes.

  1. “Good things come to those who wait.”  Patience is a virtue, but sometimes you have to grab the bull by the horns and go GET what you want.

  1. “You’ll sleep like a baby.”  Except babies are famous for NOT sleeping well.

  1. “Cheaters never prosper.”  Some people might argue Wall Street is BUILT on cheating your way into more money.

  1. “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”  Sometimes emotional damage can be even worse, and last longer.

  1. “Money doesn’t buy happiness.”  Maybe not, but it sure solves a lot of problems.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1. You can hear a blue whale’s heartbeat from more than two miles away.

  1. Runners who run with the traffic, not against it, are twice as likely to be injured.

  2. Almost three times more people speak English as a second language than as a native one.  English has roughly a billion people learning it as a second language . . . and only 370 million people speaking it natively.

  1. The first time two men kissed in a movie was in a silent film in 1927 called “Wings”

Landlord finds 19 tarantulas, 1 python left behind by tenant

A Maine landlord arranged for the rescue of 15 tarantulas and one python that had been left behind by a tenant.

Animal rescuer Drew Desjardins was called to the apartment Wednesday in Auburn, the Sun Journal reported. He found that four of 19 tarantulas had died and that the ball python did not have water.

Desjardins said Thursday that he took the surviving animals back to his home and that they were doing fine. All the recovered animals are illegal in Maine and will be relocated.

There was no word on whether the tenant was being sought.

INTERNET OUTAGE:
It sounds like science fiction, but a new study says some day, an enormous solar superstorm could knock out the internet worldwide. The paper, written by University of California assistant professor Sangeetha Abdu Jyothi, is titled “Solar Superstorms:

Planning for an Internet Apocalypse.” It says the likelihood of a solar storm of sufficient strength to cause catastrophic disruption to the internet within the next decade is 1.6-12%. If that were to happen, submarine cables between countries would shut down, power grids would go offline, and data centres from web giants would be at risk of going dark.

That’s unless we do something about it now, of course. The study recommends we strengthen our infrastructure by doing things like laying more cables to minimize the risk of being completely cut off.

A global shutdown plan should also be devised, which would reduce or turn off internet and power grids during a solar superstorm. Oh, and we should also make a backup system to keep the internet functioning.

Here’s a shortened version of the infamous three-minute-long “moth joke” Norm Macdonald told on “Conan” years ago.

  1.   Rays 2  Blue Jays 0 Tigers 1  Brewers 0

  1.   A Wisconsin woman says a neighbor’s dad jokeshelped her recover from back surgery.  Here is Neiva Fett explaining how she always looked forward to the jokes posted outside of Tom and Jennifer Hanser’s home  . . . keeping her motivated to walk and regain her strength.

  1.   Here’s Norm Macdonald and his sidekick singing along with the ending song to his Netflix series, “Norm Macdonald Has a Show”.  (If you don’t know, this was Norm’s nod to the Canadian comedy duo, Wayne and Shuster, who ended their TV showwith it.

JORDAN DAVIS JOINED BY LUKE BRYAN IN NEW VIDEO FOR ‘BUY DIRT’

Jordan Davis has released the official music video for his new single, “Buy Dirt.” Both the song and the video feature Luke Bryan

Jordan co-wrote “Buy Dirt” during the pandemic, and he tells us that Luke was the first and only consideration he had for a duet partner. [“The second we finished the song Luke kind of came to mind. I met Luke three or four years ago at a award show after party and got to hang with him, but I really kind of got to sit and talk with him after a round of golf one day, and we just talked about everything under the sun aside from music. You know, Luke kind of embodies what that song is. A lot of people get to see Luke on American Idol or on stage but Luke Bryan really is a great guy.”] SOUNDCUE (:28 OC: . . . a great guy.)

“Buy Dirt” continues to make its way up the charts. It follows Jordan’s recent Top Five single, “Almost Maybes.”

He will hit the road this fall performing on Kane Brown’s Blessed and Free Tour along with dates on his own headlining Buy Dirt Tour
