On Today’s Show
September 17, 2021 9:35 am➢ The National Toy Hall of Fame just announced the finalists for its 2021 class, including: American Girl Dolls . . . Battleship . . . billiards . . . Cabbage Patch Kids . . . a piñata . . . Risk . . . and Settlers of Catan. The winners will be voted on by toy industry experts . . . plus public voting at ToyHallOfFame.org for the next week. Around three of the 12 toys will wind up getting inducted. They’ll be announced on November 4th.
Risk was also nominated last year, but it didn’t make the cut. The three that DID make it in last year were: Jenga, sidewalk chalk, and Baby Nancy.
➢ Video of a 12-year-old cyclist beating professional cyclists during the Tour of Britain is making the rounds. Here is the moment Xander Graham rode up on the sidewalk and not only kept pace with the pros . . . but was faster than them at some points.
➢ Somebody’s doorbell cam filmed two women try to open their front door, and then leave in a hurry when they realize it’s the wrong house. (This happened in Toronto back in July, but the video is making the rounds now.)
➢ First off, can we just take a moment to wrap our heads around the fact that the movie version of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” is celebrating its 20th anniversary already? Like . . . are we really that old?
To celebrate this milestone, DAME HELEN MIRREN will be hosting a four-part competition series called “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses”. It’ll air later this year on Cartoon Network and TBS . . . then later go to HBO Max.
The show will have fans testing their knowledge to be crowned “House Cup Champion”.

Five Ways to Perk Up from an Afternoon Slump
It’s Friday! If you’ve had a long week and think you might struggle getting through the day, here are five tips on how to perk up from an afternoon slump and cruise into your weekend . . .
- Drink some water. Dehydration makes us tired . . . even mild dehydration levels can affect our performance. And it’s easy to forget to hydrate while staring at screens all day.
- Go outside. If you feel sluggish after lunch, try going outside. Research has found that more intense light can make you feel more alert.
- Take a power nap. It’s easier to nap on the job now that so many of us are working from home. Just keep it short . . . 20 to 45 minutes max.
- Talk to someone. If you notice your slump hits around the same time every day, try scheduling phone calls or meetings for that time so you’re busy and engaged.
- Eat something. Especially foods that are good for the brain, like broccoli, grains, lentils, and eggs.

Listening to Music Is the #1 Way We ‘Let Our Hair Down’
When was the last time you really let your hair down and had some fun? The average answer in a new poll was three weeks ago. And the top things that prevent us from doing it are work, life admin, and our KIDS.
It also asked people to name the most common ways they kick back and relax. And music dominated the top ten . . .
- Listening to music.
- Going out for food.
- A weekend trip.
- Comfort food.
- Celebrating a birthday.
- Going to a bar.
- Shopping sprees.
- Playing “throwback” music. So, old songs you still love.
- Singing out loud. That’s three music-related things in the top ten.
- Taking a vacation day or sick day.
Concerts just missed the list at #11.

Mystery Revealed: Here’s Why There’s a “Plus Sign” Between Dan + Shay
We finally know why DAN + SHAY has a “plus sign” between their names . . . instead of an ampersand or the word “and.”
DAN SMYERS enlightened us on Instagram: Quote, “The vision from day one was that if we ever got to headline arenas, we’d have a “plus” stage in the middle of the floor and make it do all kinds of crazy stuff.
“This also kept us from using an [Ampersand] because that would surely be a pain in the ass to build. At the time, it was such a long shot, but y’all have stuck by our sides through every bit of this journey, and here we are.”
He included several photos from their show at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, and the stage is indeed shaped like a plus sign.
One more thing: CARRIE UNDERWOOD called it a “privilege and honor” to join Dan + Shay on the song “Only Us” from the “Dear Evan Hansen” soundtrack.

Tim McGraw Compares a Live Show to a High School Football Game
If you’ve ever played organized sports, then you know how TIM MCGRAW feels right before going on stage. Somebody asked how he’s feeling about getting back on the road again, and he did the sports analogy thing.
Quote, “I always compare it to being an athlete in high school, in the locker room before a game. I don’t get nervous. [I get] really excited and just full of energy and adrenaline. To me it’s like game day. I get pretty jacked up for it.”
The only time he gets anxious is when he performs on TV, especially on awards shows. Quote, “Now that’s a whole different story. That makes you really nervous, and that’s when I really have to gather myself.”
This is interesting too. Tim gets just as annoyed as the rest of us when one of his shows is delayed for some reason. Quote, “When we have a show and something’s delaying it, it drives me crazy. I want to get going [and] get ready to hit it.”
One last thing, in case you didn’t see this. Tim posted a brief clip last week of himself and BRANDON DAVIS doing a virtual duet of “Something Like That”.

SCOTTY McCREERY PAYS TRIBUTE TO GEORGE STRAIT WITH NEW SONG
Scotty McCreery has released a new song called “Damn Strait” from his upcoming album, Same Truck, due out this Friday (September 17th). He will perform the song on NBC’s Today show next Tuesday (September 21st) during the third hour. Scotty, who didn’t write the song, said,“Every now and then you hear a song that sounds so much like you.
I grew up as a huge George Strait fan, and when I heard this song, I raised my hand to say, ‘I want this one.’ Every country fan has a George Strait story, and everyone has a memory attached to their favorite songs.”
In fact, Scotty credits “King George” with his current career path.
He said, “The first country music concert I ever went to was George Strait, Reba and Lee Ann Womack. When I saw that show, I said, ‘I’m gonna do that one day.’” The lead single from Same Truck, “You Time,” continues to climb the charts at Country radio and currently sits at Number Four on both the Billboard and Country Aircheck/Mediabase radio charts.
