Not all pranks are well-received. Police in Galveston, Texas, got a call on Monday (September 13th) about a masked man on a local beach who was holding what appeared to be a bloody knife. This led to the arrest of Mark Metzger, a local attorney, who decided to roam the beach in a Michael Myers costume. He was cited for disorderly conduct and released. Metzger said in a Facebook post Monday night he was “still fuzzy on what exactly was illegal.”

Amy Schumer is on the mend after undergoing surgery for endometriosis. She detailed the removal of her uterus and appendix on Instagram in a video taken by her husband Chris Fischer, as she recovered in hospital on Saturday. This isn’t the first time Schumer has gotten candid about endometriosis pain and her fertility. In August 2020, she discussed the risks of trying to have a second baby on “Sunday Today”, telling Willie Geist that the IVF procedure she underwent to conceive her son Gene “was really tough”, and “I decided that I can’t be pregnant ever again.” She added that she and Fisher were considering a surrogate, but decided to “hold off for right now”.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1. The green computer code in the “Matrix”movies isn’t nonsense.  It’s a bunch of sushi recipes.

  1. Teddy bears, which were named after Teddy Roosevelt, were a huge hit.  So a toy company tried to recreate the formula with the next president, William Howard Taft, and sold stuffed possums called Billy Possums.  They did not catch on.

  1. A golden retriever named Buddy played Comet on “Full House”and ALSO played Air Bud in the first “Air Bud” movie.  He died in 1998 at age 9.

  1. Florida passed a law in 1989 that banned bars from holding dwarf throwing contests . . . and the law held up when a state representative triedto get it repealed in 2011.

A Man Found a Golden Ticket to Win a Candy Factory . . . But He Doesn’t Want It

Last September, one of the creators of Jelly Belly, David Klein, announced he was retiring, and would be giving away a candy factory Willy Wonka style.  NOT the Jelly Belly factory though . . . another one he owned, in Florida.

It was an elaborate treasure hunt:  50 golden tickets were hidden . . . each in a different state . . . before the grand prize riddle was announced four months ago.

The winner was 39-year-old Andrew Maas from Colorado.  He found the winning golden ticket buried under a bridge in Kokomo, Indiana.  He’s now the proud owner of a 4,000-square-foot plant that makes Sandy Candy and other treats.

There’s just one problem.  Andrew isn’t in a position to move his family to Florida to run the business . . . he was just in it for the thrill of the hunt.  So, Klein is still giving him the factory, but will then BUY IT BACK from him.  And presumably give it to someone else, without a year-long scavenger hunt.

Over the past year, 35,000 people were solving riddles and searching for golden tickets in all 50 states.  Each initial ticket came with a $5,000 prize.  It’s unclear how much Andrew will get when Klein “buys back” the factory from him.

SCIENCE NEWS

  1. Wired.com did a pretty cool video on the physics of the Milk Crate Challenge, and why it’s so hard to do.  It’s even harder to steady yourself when you’re stepping down.  That’s why even people who make it to the top have problems on the other side.

  1. Fire and smoke alarms went off on the Space Stationduring a routine battery recharge.  Crewmembers said they could smell burning plastic, but it sounds like they’re not too worried.  No word on what caused it yet though.

  1. In other space news:  NASA wants to build a giant telescopeinside a crater on the Moon.  And the new James Webb Space Telescope is now set to launch in mid-December.  It’s a newer version of the Hubble telescope that’s been in orbit since 1990.

  1.  A team of scientists and entrepreneurs announced Monday (September 13th) that they’ve started a company called Colossal with the goal of using genetic engineering to bring back the woolly mammoth, which went extinct some 10,000 years ago.

They hope to produce embryos of the mammoth-like elephants in a few years, grow them in an artificial mammoth uterus lined with uterine tissue grown from stem cells, and ultimately create entire populations of them to be released  on the Siberian tundra, the mammoth’s former habitat. The New York Times reports other researchers are skeptical it will work, and if it does, they’ll face serious ethical questions, including: “Is it humane to produce an animal whose biology we know so little about?

Who gets to decide whether they can be set loose, potentially to change the ecosystems of tundras in profound ways?”

Humankind’s Most Valuable Vault Is Filled With Seeds, Not Cash

Earth might be due for another extinction, number six, and the loss of vegetation will be unforgiving for all human life.  Though there is no guardian angel set to save the scene of calamity, there is one resource that could let us continue to chow down while it happens. Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago with quite the surprise twist; it’s home to the Global Seed Vault — a gigantic nearly-hidden cave inside of a mountain.

The cave is home to over one million different types of seeds from everywhere around the world so that in the event of climate disaster, world staples such as corn, barley, lettuce, eggplant, sorghum, and cowpea will be available to the generation that’s inherited all the crap we had coming for it.

The below-freezing temperatures and permafrost of this archipelago keep the seeds intact, and it’s on track to stay that way for the next 30 years.

  1.   Last night on “Sunday Night Football”, with only 1:20 left in the game, the Kansas City Chiefs were close to kicking a go-ahead field goal, but fumbled running another play.  Baltimore rookie, Odafe Oweh, punched it out, and landed on it.  Here’s the play that sealed the Ravens’ win over KC, 36 to 35.  (KC would never get the ball back.)

  1.   Tom Brady has suggested that he wants to keep playing until he’s 45.  Well, he just turned 44.  But he may have just dashed the hopes of all the haters out there.  In a new video, Rob Gronkowski asks Tom if he thinks he can play until he’s 50 . . . and Tom says YES.

JIMMIE ALLEN SAYS HE’S ‘IN TROUBLE’ IN ‘DWTS’ COMPETITION

Jimmie Allen makes his Dancing With The Stars debut tonight (Monday, September 20th) on ABC. While he’s confident when it comes to writing and recording music and being the personality behind the microphone, Jimmie tells us that dancing is not his strong suit.

As far as he’s concerned, he brings no advantages to the table at DWTS[“Advantages? I don’t think I have any. I don’t think I have any advantage. If I can get more camera time talking and just hanging out than dancing and let people judge me off of that we’re good. We’re gonna take that Mirrorball home, but since they’re judging me on being on the show with dancing and stuff I’m in trouble. Mmmm hmmm.”]

Season 21 of NBC’s The Voice returns tonight (Monday, September 20th) at 8 p.m. ET with veteran coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend alongside new addition Ariana Grande.

Blake is excited to welcome some fresh blood to the show, especially one with who is such a superstar. He tells us: [“I’m always excited to work with somebody new, and she’s incredibly talented and and a huge, I mean, obviously a huge star, and it’s always more exciting for me. The bigger the star, the harder they fall, and it’s always way more exciting to me to beat somebody of her level of popularity than it is just to be, you know, some loser like Kelly or John, you know.”]

This season’s Battle Advisors include two Country stars: Jason Aldean (Team Kelly) and Dierks Bentley (Team Blake), along with Kristin Chenoweth (Team Ariana) and Camila Cabello (Team Legend).

ASHLEY MCBRYDE WAS ONE OF JUST TWO ARTISTS CARLY PEARCE WANTED TO WORK WITH

Carly Pearce and Ashey McBryde teamed up for the first time to write and record a new song on Carly’s new album, 29: Written In Stone, which is due out tomorrow (Friday, September 17th). The song is called “Never Wanted To Be That Girl,” and as Carly tells us, Ashley was on her very short list of fellow artists she wanted to collaborate with. [“I’ve only wanted to write with two of my peers, one being Luke Combs, and we wrote ‘I Hope You’re Happy Now,’ which didn’t suck, I guess, and Ashley, and I know that Ashley and I are very different, but in a lot of ways, musically and vocally, we’re quite similar, and I would sit next to her in rounds that we’ve played over the years and just be like, ‘Oh, I want to sing with her,’ and I just asked her if she wanted to write a song, much like I did Luke,  and she did.”]

“Never Wanted To Be That Girl” is out now.

Carly is up for Female Vocalist and Album of the Year for 29 at the upcoming CMA Awards. The winners will be announced on November 10th in Nashville.
