You Have To Watch Ellen’s New Comedy Show!
December 20, 2018 3:03 pmEllen DeGeneres hasn’t done stand up comedy in 15 years but she is back with a new Netflix special.
“Ellen DeGeneres – Relatable” debuted on Tuesday. Before you go thinking “another comedy special” stop.
It’s so much more than that. It’s a playful back and forth between the funny stuff and joke telling, and a glimpse into Ellen as a person. I have to admit it threw me off at first when she got SERIOUS in her comedy show. You expect non stop funny. You expect her funny self to never stop.
But she shares so much in this. Growing up in a Christian Science household – not being able to even see a commercial for aspirin on TV. Her parents were a bit obsessed with celebrity, but she never wanted to be a celebrity or even a comedian for that matter. It was the loss of a girlfriend early on that prompted her to question God on life. She was in a tiny apartment, infested by fleas and that led to writing a conversation to God and she imagined how it would play out. Picking up the phone, angels singing in the background, being put on hold – that day she made up her mind that one day she would be doing that bit on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and she would be the first female invited to sit on the couch. It happened. 6 years later.
She shared her struggles of being herself, being true to herself and how she made the decision to tell the world she was gay. It would lose her a job. She didn’t think she would return to tv again. She was told nobody would want to watch her.
She is now into her 16th season of her talk show. I think people want to watch her.
She makes jokes at her own expense about her celebrity and riches but she also shares openly and honestly about the pain and struggles that she has gone through. She wears her heart on her sleeve. The woman genuinely cares about people.
Relatable? I don’t think she could be any more relatable. I strongly encourage you to watch it. It’s only available on Netflix.
