Did You Watch?

The Simpsons episode Sunday night was Canadian-themed.  Was it funny? I guess that’s up to you. I watched it. I got a few chuckles out of it.

The Simpsons visit Niagara Falls and, through a series of unfortunate events, Lisa ends up going over the falls and landing in Ontario to be greeted by oh so friendly Canadians.

There are many jokes about our country, some made at our expense. The last place Ottawa Senators were the punchline of a joke.  In one scene, Lisa Simpson is seen recovering in a Canadian hospital with an RCMP officer in uniform at her bedside. He tells Lisa that while in Canada she would be “assigned her own hockey team.”  Lisa responds by crossing her fingers and repeatedly praying “please not Ottawa,” before the Mountie puts a Senators cap on her head and apologized for the disappointment. (The Senators finished last in the NHL with a 29-47-6 record in 2018-19.)

There were other “digs” at Canada. Kids with curling brooms.  They made fun of Newfies among other jokes that weren’t taken too kindly to by Canadians.  And yes Justin Trudeau was featured. Lisa got to ask him a question and dug in with the SNC Lavalin scandal.
