Let’s Talk About This Years CNE Foods PLEASE!
August 19, 2019 2:06 pmThe Canadian National Exhibition opened Friday. And I can’t stop looking at the FOOD!
When I was a kid we went to the CNE – Canadian National Exhibition. We grew up in Streetsville, so it was a yearly tradition. The end of summer, and a sign it was almost time to go back to school. I remember the rides and the games and the general excitement. I don’t ever remember the food like they have now.
I used to think a bag of cotton candy, or a caramel apple was “fair food”. Not anymore. It goes so much bigger than that. I want to meet the people that come up with this food and shake their hand, or hug them, thank them for their wild and daring creations.
I’m 47. I am old enough to know what’s good for me. What’s “healthy”. If you’re looking for anything at the C.N.E. made with cauliflower, or low calorie, you are plain out of luck.
That kid that got excited about the cotton candy has leveled up and she wants the hot Cheetos-encrusted fried chicken sandwiched between two cheese-stuffed Doritos. A Nacho chip burger.
I would even be willing to try the deep-fried avocado.
Dill pickle lemonade. No thanks. I’d rather be thirsty.
Frozen cookie dough spaghetti. Uh huh. It’s a real thing.
Deep-fried tacos is a thing and I’m intrigued.
Fried chicken in a crepe. “A fried thing tucked inside another fried thing with a mac and cheese-looking sauce”.
Tell me more.
There’s the “Wakin’ Bacon”. A waffle bowl. Loaded with tater tots. Eggs. Bacon and hollandaise sauce. I’ll take two.
How to improve on funnel cake? How about a funnel cake fried chicken sandwich. Sweet. Salty. Crunchy. I’m interested.
The Dorito-encrusted corn dog. Could be good.
The rainbow grilled cheese.
My heart is already drawn to the deep-fried Oreos. In bright beautiful colours of the rainbow. I would love to try them and pretty sure I wouldn’t share.
Pickle pizza. Um, no thanks.
The Pierogi burger. Because burgers are boring. Why not add an entire row of potato and cheese pierogies, with sour cream, cheese and bacon and aioli.
BBQ quail.
And rainbow funnel cake. You know. For dessert.
Wash it down with the Tim Hortons/ Chips Ahoy Iced Cap. Or Twizzler Slush.
Pound cake French toast.
Scorpion ice cream? No thank you. I’m trying to cut back.
