The View From Here – Flying Snakes, No More Birthday Cake Candles, Guilty Pleasures And More

So nice to be back from vacation!  A few days off doing nothing is good for the soul!  Although being at home all the time, it doesn’t feel THAT different.  How do YOU shut yourself off from work when you’re on vacation?  Especially now, if you too, are working from home?  Going back to work is more challenging.  You’re just switching rooms, instead of going TO an office.

Today we learned some snakes fly.  That let sink in for a minute.

I don’t like snakes.  I don’t trust them.  They scare me.  I  can appreciate that they are in the world, but I don’t want to be anywhere close to them.

Today we learned there is a place where snakes actually hurl themselves out of trees.  “The paradise tree snake — does just that, propelling through the air from trees in South and Southeast Asia. ”  That’s a snake on a mission.  That’s a snake I don’t want to ever, ever, ever encounter.  I don’t like seeing a snake on the ground, or in my garden.  I can’t imagine the fear involved wandering an area where they could literally fly out of a tree.  Um, nope.  No thank you.

There will be no travelling for me EVER in South and Southeast Asia until researchers figure out how to STOP those snakes from flying.  Ick.

An expert says get used to birthday cakes without candles.  “Paul Dawson, a professor in Food Systems and Safety at Clemson University in South Carolina, believes that COVID-19 should make people reconsider whether they want to celebrate their birthday by blowing candles and sharing the cake with loved ones.”  Instead, consider other options including waving at the flames, using a hair dryer or giving out individual cupcakes with a single candle to party participants. Sparklers can also be an option.  I know I’m getting to the point where there’s more candles than cake – but this doesn’t seem right. I think I would rather go without the candles before I wave at the flames. Thoughts?  Text us using the A1 Security textline – 519-464-1999.

What show is YOUR guilty pleasure?  The one you watch, but are almost embarrassed to admit you do?  That show for me now is Nashville. Never thought I would watch it.  Never expected to love it enough to give up sleep and talking to my family. And I was so surprised to learn that one of the characters is actually Canadian.  Lennon Stella – whose music we play on the Fox – was a big part of that show.  Playing the part of Maddie Conrad from 2012 – 2018.  Super talented.  Watch it.  I dare you.  Country music fan or not.  It’s an inside look at the industry.  The cat fights. The drama.  The scandal.  And the cheesy country music. And no spoilers please – I’m only in Season 2.  I’ve got a lot left to watch.

The Go-Go’s just released the trailer to their highly anticipated documentary set to air on August 1st on Showtime.  In a statement, the band said

“We lived it and we survived it. Now, looking back on our history through this film, we get to relive our journey as a band: the fun, the adventure, the highs and the lows. We hope this documentary will show the world that we were pioneers, and how our experience paved the way for many other female (and some male!) musicians”
