It Happened This Day In 1975
November 10, 2020 3:24 pmI was four so I don’t remember it but I remember learning about it and singing the song in elementary school.
Maybe it was grade four. Part of music class. We studied the meaning of the lyrics of the song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
When you’re young, you don’t understand the gravity. Now, I realize just how haunting it really is.
It was this day in 1975, the 729-foot-long freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald would sink during a huge storm on Lake Superior, killing all 29 crew on board.
It left Wisconsin the evening of November 9, 1975, carrying 26,116 long tons of iron ore on board, headed to Detroit.
It never reached it’s destination.
To this day, the Edmund Fitzgerald remains the largest ship to ever go down in the Lakes.
