The View From Here – Throwback Thursday Flashbacks

I love Throwback Thursdays.  I love all the memories that come with it.

This picture showed up on my Facebook page today and I couldn’t help but smile.

It’s an oldie, that’s for sure.  I don’t know what year.  Early 80’s?  Maybe.

It’s like a treasure hunt.  So many clues to life at the time revealed in the picture.  The colours.  The curtains.  The mugs on the counter. My mom loved her mug racks. (smile) And orange I guess. (smile)

That shirt with my name on the back.

Do you remember when that was a big deal?  I remember going to a place, picking out a shirt, and then picking out the decal to be ironed on.  Having your name in letters on the back, in that velvety type material, was just a bonus.

A period in time when there was roller skating at the rink on Friday nights.  Trying so hard to skate backwards like everyone else and not fall down.  Holding on to that wall for dear life.

Saturday morning cartoons with a big bowl of cereal.  Unless we were bowling.  That was something I did for a while.  The only sport my parents could get me interested in and even that they had to force me.  Or maybe bribe me with a promise of quarters to play Pac-Man in the arcade and a chocolate bar when I was done.  Turns out I was actually really good at it.  Who knew.

Funny how one picture can trigger so many memories.

Grade six?  Maybe seven. A lifetime ago and like yesterday all at the same time.

What do you remember the most from childhood?

A favourite show?  Cartoon?  Television show?  I remember The Flintstones on my lunch hour.  Leave it to Beaver.  All in the Family.  I remember my grandma babysitting us and watching that as she waited for my grampa to pick her up.  Friday nights were the Dukes of Hazzard if I remember right.  The only night we were allowed chips and pop.  Living large.  Ha ha ha.

What is your favourite childhood memory?  Do you have a favourite shirt?   I swear, I still remember standing at the counter trying to decide what to put on my shirt.  I think I still remember the smell of the room.

Here’s to Throwback Thursdays and all the crazy memories it brings back, and for making some of us feel older than we’d like. (smile)
