West Side Story – Long But Worth It

My oldest daughter has been wanting to see this movie since we first heard it was being made.  We’ve been counting down the days, waiting for it to finally hit theatres.

Finally, this weekend we bought our tickets.  So excited.  We got dressed up.  She did my makeup.

Overall – it was good, but it was LONG.  Almost three hours in the theatre long.   Eating the entire bag of popcorn and two bags of candy long.  Too long.

My daughter didn’t love it.  And she loves musicals.   She thought it was too long, and a lot of things didn’t make sense to her.  She did love the songs though – she had learned them from a Glee episode way back when.

I cried.  The message was meaningful.   Love is stronger than hate.  Love doesn’t discriminate.  Love doesn’t choose sides.  It’s like a Romeo and Juliet type situation.   Two people – on different sides – fall in love and will do anything to be together.  So much to this movie.  Told in song and dance.

A lot of history behind this movie.  A Broadway musical.  A movie first in the early sixties.  The message remains the same. The division is something we are dealing with even today, maybe for different reasons.  The Jets.  The Sharks.   Each trying to claim their place.  Fighting each other every step of the way.

So much talent in this movie, directed by Steven Spielberg.  The acting.  The drama.  The fights.  The violence.  The message.  So good.

Would I watch it again?  Nope.  But I’m so glad I got to experience it.
