Movie Review – Marry Me
February 23, 2022 3:54 pmI went on a date night with my daughter last night to see the new Jennifer Lopez movie – Marry Me. I admit, I went in with low expectations. The trailer didn’t look like it was going to be a life changing movie by any means, but J-Lo has been in a number of movies that were really good – Maid in Manhattan, The Wedding Planner are two movies that I absolutely loved. So I was hopeful. I knew it was going to be a somewhat cheesy rom-com going into it and I was ready for it.
We pretty much had the theatre to ourselves with the exception of a small handful of people. I almost hope they keep reserved seating as we open up. It’s nice to know you have a seat on what could potentially be a busy movie night.
Jennifer Lopez plays pop superstar Kat Valdez. She is about to say “I do” in a live event, on stage in front of her fans and on social media in front of millions of people. But, just minutes before the ceremony is set to begin, she finds out her fiance’ has been cheating. Instead of calling off the wedding, she sees a random guy in the crowd and marries him on the spot. That stranger, played by Owen Wilson, who is SO GOOD in this movie. His character is adorable. Lovable. Innocent and sweet. And you’re routing for him and for things to work out. He feels out of place and unable to keep his end of the deal. You want them to be together, but they are very different people from different worlds. You can see he doesn’t feel like he fits into her world and he doesn’t want to. He inspires her to change. He helps her find her way back to herself. One of my favourite songs in it is about falling in love with yourself. The soundtrack, no surprise, is pretty good too. Jennifer Lopez can’t sing a bad song.
It’s not a life changing movie. No big life lessons other than be true to you.
My daughter and I both walked out of the theatre with a smile and we both thought it was a really good movie. Better than expected.
If you’re looking to watch a fun movie, that will make you smile and feel good – go see it. Two thumbs up. 8 out of 10. Totally worth it.
